this topic pops up from time to time, yesterday the cantina here was all abuzz, a local friend just landed the contract for the artwork at the new
international airport at ojos negro. word is the privately funded project is close to breaking ground.
anyone else know anything about this?David K - 10-31-2014 at 08:49 AM
Hope that includes a four lane safer road to replace 20 miles of curves and trucks.willardguy - 10-31-2014 at 08:51 AM
thats allegedly in the plans.DENNIS - 10-31-2014 at 09:18 AM
Maybe it will replace the cartel owned dirt strip that is already out there.DanO - 10-31-2014 at 11:13 AM
Here's a pdf on the feasibility study. Interesting.
Never mind, the file's too big. Just google Ensenada International Airport and it'll come up.

I am with you on that David....that stretch of road from Ensenada to Ojos is one of my least favorite drives in all of Baja!mtgoat666 - 10-31-2014 at 01:34 PM
why a new airport? why not improve the existing one on south side of town?
for the cost they would save improving existing airport, they could finish building the belt highway (high speed detour) around edge inland edge of
town...
ensenada with a beltway and modern airport,.... that would be big time...DENNIS - 10-31-2014 at 01:43 PM

Because it's part of a military base and the military probably doesn't want anything to do with it.
It's time for all of them to move east where they belong.bajaguy - 10-31-2014 at 01:49 PM
The existing "airport" is, in fact, an active Air Force base that "lets" the municipality use the facilities. Last year the Air Force wanted to kick
all commercial and private flights out of the base.
Either move the military or build a combined facility in El Tigre and open the current facility to commercial development.
Building in Ojos Negros may run into problems as that area is being developed as a wine/grape growing area.
If the new airport is built in El Tigre, it can take advantage of the improvements that will be made to the free road with the new inland toll road
alignment that has already been approved and funded

this existing military airport could be shared. i doubt the military has even a dozen takeoff/landings per day.DENNIS - 10-31-2014 at 02:12 PM

Not the point. That would make since twenty five years ago when the military had nothing to do but protect the president, but now they have a war to
fight and don't want to be bothered by Air Alaska tourists.
Their traffic has increased with Attorney General planes and choppers becoming a daily presence in the local sky.bajaguy - 10-31-2014 at 02:42 PM
it is "shared"........The Air Force want's it all to themselves

Oso Negros would require a crapload of road improvements. But, it would also not be subject to the fog.mexicali-kid - 5-9-2016 at 07:37 AM

The new airport at Ojos Negros is expected to break ground in 2017 according to the Secretary of Tourism. durrelllrobert - 5-9-2016 at 09:14 AM
This will probably coincide with San Diego Airport moving to Miramar or Imperial Valley or ?????Bajahowodd - 5-10-2016 at 04:43 PM
Might it be less expensive to build the airport up the hill for the military that would allow much easier access to the existing facility for civilian
and commercial flights?TMW - 5-10-2016 at 05:11 PM
That doesn't look like it is anywhere near Ojo Negos but north of Ensenada.David K - 5-10-2016 at 05:44 PM

Are you basing that on StuckSucks map that shows sites of feasability studies?TMW - 5-11-2016 at 04:32 PM
Yes I am. PaulW - 6-18-2017 at 08:33 AM
The Baja Norte governor is ready to award the contract to built the new airport http://www.ggnorth.com/index.php/2017/06/16/the-ensenada-air...
The location is at the existing air strip just east of Ojos.
The new Ensenada bypass road will be east of the coast passing near Ojos and heading N/S. North of Ojos the new toll road will head N then west thru
Guadalupe valley then back to Highway 1 as shown on the Stuck image previously posted.
BajaTed - 6-18-2017 at 08:51 AM
The "new" (red) toll road route joins Hwy. 1D @ Jatay, right across from Bajamar. This will create ease of access to the wine region and be the back
up for when the next slide occurs. SFandH - 6-18-2017 at 10:26 AM

Hmmm, meanwhile the cities of Tijuana and Ensenada keep growing and little is spent on infrastructure. The TJ sewer system is crumbling, polluting TJ
and southern San Diego county beaches and the Tijuana estuary, a wildlife refuge.
The majority of TJ sewage enters the ocean untreated, not even primary treatment, right at the Punta Bandera beach, not even a pipe to carry it out to
deeper water.
So the state spends money on an airport in Ensenada.

Based on the article and map it is directly east. If it is alike a lot of other projects it will never get finished. They can not even fix potholes.
