Dive Bar in Ensenada

bajaguy - 11-6-2014 at 02:18 PM

OK, so the outside appearance, inside decor and atmosphere won't get this place on any gourmet reviews, but it might make Diners, Drive-ins and Dives......heavy on the Dive.

Tuesday afternoons - rib eye steak or salmon, veggies and baked potato

Thursday afternoons - same as above but substitute pasta for the spud

Standard bar drinks available, their margaritas are not bad

Chef (cook)??? works over an outdoor charcoal grill

120 pesos for rib eye or salmon. I had both......won't win any culinary awards from the "A" list crowd, but a great meal at a great price.

El Sarape
s/e corner of Blancarte and Costero
Ensenada
Dinner served from 4PM

Edited for photo......and tonight they also had grilled tuna

sounds great for the price! sheesh, I can't find a decent ribeye at the store for that price!

You are right Woody.

The three pack of rib-eyes at (US) Costco, are well over $30.00

Maybe that's why the chef is working a charcoal grill outside!

ribeye's and steaks !!

captkw - 11-10-2014 at 07:17 PM

That tortilla looks a bit burnt !! Myself, found out a while back that if you like a rare steak, you must really confere that messge...as in rare,,,almost raw,,, rare !! other wise in most of mex the beef is WAYYYY over cooked for my taste....Sonora beef is "da bomb"...K&T

KaceyJ - 11-10-2014 at 07:31 PM

That looks like pretty good fair for a dive bar

Too bad about the fire , looks like they quickly rallied

Speaking of ribeye's, can I get some suggestions PLEASE, For a Xmas BBQ, where I might be able to order 2 dozen Frenched Rib Eye Cowboy Steaks in the Ensenada area -- a good carneceria ???

Thanks

Several restaurants in the Ensenada area get their meat (USDA rib eyes and NY's) at the Ensenada COSTCO

The Canasta restaurant supply also has meat, corner of 4th and Granada

A custom meat shop is the San Nicholas, across from the Soriana/Office Depot complex on Reforma and Delante

"Most" Mexican meat markets do not dry age their beef, keep that in mind

It's steak with the bone sticking out to use for a handle ;)

Thanks Bajaguy for the suggestions

Some of the big names of the Guadalupe Valley and Ensenada sit at a table in the patio behind the bar and drink wine, scotch and smoke cigars......some very interesting conversations!!

The three pack of rib-eyes at (US) Costco, are well over $30.00

Right, but each rib-eye is about 5" thick. This one looks a bit thinner.

bajaguy - 4-2-2015 at 04:47 PM

Just had dinner there tonight. Minister of Finance and Director of Family Happiness had the Rib Eye (delicious as usual) and I had the Ahi tuna steak.....oustanding!!! one Pacifico and one glass of red wine....315 pesos ($21USD)

Speaking of frenched, the Enseadada Commercial Mexicano (pelican store) currently has frenched 8 rib rack of lamb, stamped product of Australia, in the frozen meat section and it is very meaty and tasty cooked on the grill.

This one's probably more to your liking
