Show me your Baja Birds....

Pompano - 12-30-2004 at 08:12 PM

We have lots of oystercatchers on the islands out in front. They make great sounds when calling each other.

Natalie Ann - 12-30-2004 at 09:09 PM

Nice oystercatcher, Pompano.

Sung to the tune of......

Santiago - 12-31-2004 at 07:55 AM

"Everybody, have you heard,
JESSE's all-time favorite is a mockingbird..."

Every Spring a couple make a nest in the liquid amber in our back yard and spend the next 2 months dive-bombing our 2 fat, lazy cats - great fun.

I've not seen the oriole yet - is the range all of Baja/Mexico? How common?

Great photos everyone!

Pompano - 12-31-2004 at 02:25 PM

Here is a 'bird' we are all very familiar with....this photo is from 1975. NOTE: No army barracks buildings.

another favorite Baja bird....

Pompano - 12-31-2004 at 02:32 PM

One of our friends and a worker at the house built these osprey nest holders on top of the power line poles to protect the birds from being zapped building their own platforms. Good deal for these hunting birds...I have a great photo somewhere of one flying off with a rattlesnake wiggling in it's talons. I will find it and post.

Couldn't find the bird/snake pic, but.....

Pompano - 12-31-2004 at 02:38 PM

the osprey dropped the snake and we got it for dinner!

A great pelican roosting place and....

Pompano - 12-31-2004 at 02:54 PM

a great snook and 'robalo' fishing hole. Care to guess where in southern Baja this place is?:?:

an amazing feat for sure that won't be repeated for many years.....

My Favorite bird sightings........

Pompano - 1-2-2005 at 02:47 AM

This bird sight at sea gets the blood going if you're a fisherman. When you see one of these happening, get into it quick and pitch a crocodile or whatever you can cast and pull through the feeding fish. This is a relatively small 'boil'...years ago there would have been thousands more.

David K - 1-4-2005 at 11:21 PM

Pompano... to answer the question, I am going to say the Old Pier (Muelle Viejo) in San Quintin Bay?:?:

Pompano - 1-5-2005 at 04:54 AM

No, David, but a good guess..not the Old Pier, although that is a similar area..my 'pilings & pelicans' photo is many hundreds of miles away. Here's another photo of that spot...hint: we went there to fish for rabalo (snook) and there used to be a cannery there many years ago.

Pompano - 1-11-2005 at 07:06 AM

Answer to the location of the pelican/piers photo....San Mateo in Mag Bay near the old cannery.

Here's a familiar sight in the shallows in front of our home. A great minnow catcher.

baja birding

gringorio - 1-25-2005 at 07:46 PM

Great photos! And speaking of, I am finally getting around to updating the www.BajaBirding.org web site. That means I need a new photo for the home page. A couple months ago a few folks sent me some possibilities, but I wanted to get the word out again before I make the final choice. The only rules are that the photo has to have been taken in or around the Baja peninsula and it has to be of a bird! Please include your name and year the photo was taken. The best shot will be on the web site home page for 6-8 months. The Baja Birding home page will look very similar to the www.BajaCaliforniaConservation.org home page once I get the changes made.

Thank you!
