Car/Boat Insurance

Capt. George - 8-31-2003 at 10:46 AM

HELP! Is it possible that Insurance for six months or less can be up to five times less costly then annual policies?? I seem to be reading thoise figures through Vagabundos......Any suggestions welcomed. Capt. George

CJ - 8-31-2003 at 01:04 PM

Capt. The best way to buy auto insurance for me is annually, menos dinero. After using a couple of companies over the years, Lewis and Lewis has proven best for me. @ 1-800-966-6830 . I have been with them for the last six years. They are real easy to deal with and have a good reputation. We have a house on Calle Davis north of La Pinta. Hopefully we will meet each other when we are there Oct.-Nov. Buenos Suertes, CJ

capt. mike - 8-31-2003 at 05:35 PM

Capt. , i sent you an e mail today. go w/ L & L. see you and also have to meet CJ in late oct!

I'll third that......

Debra - 8-31-2003 at 08:50 PM

Rule of thumb is, if you are going to buy ins. for 2wks. or more the annul policy is as cheap or cheaper......Bedman did alot of leg work on this issue (If you ask, I'm sure he would be happy to send your his spread-sheet)...when all these ins. questions came up several months ago, I did some calling myself and found that my Progressive ins. covers me for comp., so I just bought Mexican liabilty from Lewis & Lewis at a cost of $87 per year ....I haven't seen the exchange at Vag's, (I am a member) but, I'd be surprized if the 6 month ins. is cheaper, let alone 5 times....how much cheaper that $87 per year does is get? Hope this helps. Debra

Bedman, thanks!

CJ: Dusky worth every bit of the dollar!
Put it up against Contender, Sea Vee, Regulator or any other equivilant sized boat.....Sixteen layers of hand-layed glass, a battle wagon. Built in Dania, FL
You can find them on the web.....Dusky Boats......My 19 is the best small Center Console I've ever ran, dry, soft on the knees and it will get you home!

Back on the original subject I've been looking into this lately. For years I've done the Discover Baja thing. After doing some checking Lewis and Lewis will save me money for coverage and give me more of it. Pescador pointing the high coverage out for me and he should knwo its his business here in the states. Then he gets his permits, visas etc. from Discover Baja. After doing some more checking it looks like Vagabundos will even save you a bit more on that end. So it looks like I'll being doing Lewis/Lewis and Vags for the best coverage for the best price

David K - 9-7-2003 at 02:40 PM

But, do consider that Discover Baja is conveniently located right off I-5 in San Diego, has books and maps for sale, and is run by two great people (Hugh and Carol).

Insurance

Jack Swords - 9-7-2003 at 04:47 PM

David, where is Discover Baja located near the I/5? Vags couldn't provide my insurance needs and I've changed everything to DB, nice people. I'd like to drop by when I head down.

AcuDoc - 9-7-2003 at 10:32 PM

Geez David I stick up for ya in a post and look what ya do... Just kidding!!!!! I know that Discover Baja certainly has some advantages and a great outfit and have used them for years. But for a poor boy like me $20 bucks here, $20 bucks there adds up. Vags are great guys too. It's purely a business decision.

Jack - Go to there website and there is a map showing the location, very easy to find.

Interstate 5, Clairemont Drive exit (East).

Go up the hill on Clairemont Drive about 3/4 mile, and there's a shopping center on your right just after Clairemont Drive veers to the left... with a Keil's Market.

DB is at the last entrance on your right into the plaza.

Hi AcuDoc, no offense intended... sorry. Just wanted to give one advantage Discover Baja had, and that's location. I was going to get Lewis & Lewis insurance (as Bedman rated them #1), but needed it that day and I didn't have a working printer at the time. I was already a DB member (for their great newsletter), and dropped in their office on my way to Baja for the insurance.

Jack Swords - 9-8-2003 at 07:35 AM

Thanks Accudoc, Doug, David. Vags have been great, been with them many years. They just couldn't carry a Mexican liability policy on my sailboat in La Paz anymore as their Mexican carrier bailed on them. DB still wrote policies, so had to switch, nothing against the Vags at all. Did find DB easy to work with too.

AcuDoc - 9-8-2003 at 10:01 AM

David-no offense taken, we've known each other for years over these boards, just playing with ya
