Slow growth has been a problem around Latin America. The region averaged just 1.3 percent GDP growth last year, and that is projected to be even lower this year.

Also troubling is the increase in poverty and inequality in Mexico. A recent biannual report from the government agency, Coneval, found that the country’s poverty rate — set at $158 per month — reached 46.2 percent of the population last year, an increase from 45.5 percent in 2012. Esquivel noted that poverty rates, including extreme poverty, are similar to the early 1990s, before the North American Free Trade Agreement.

We are not doing much better, my friend. I've seen forecasts for 2016 calling for 0.2-0.5% GDP drop from current 2.5% (or whatever number they've come up so far).

On the "bright side", 7% growth in China and India - it has to come from somewhere.

ESPECIALLY when considering that the additional benefits available to those below, at or within 400 percent of that poverty level can be significant.

OTOH, when was the last time you saw someone living out of a tent and shopping cart in Baja? Or their car? We have lots of both here in San Diego.

I think all large cities worldwide have homeless people. Plus cities in warm climates are the best cities to be homeless. If I was down to my last $1000 and knew there was no more coming in, I'd buy an airplane ticket to Honolulu, wander down to Waikiki, and take it from there.

Baja? Tijuana has plenty of homeless. Don't know about Mexicali, Ensenada, La Paz, or Los Cabos.

I have read that on a worldwide basis, extreme poverty is decreasing. Certainly millions in China and India have escaped extreme poverty in the past 25-50 years. And, Africa, the poorest continent is improving.

The problem is the middle class disappearing, and not into the upper classes.

Just on the west side of the island heading to north shore you will find many "homeless" camped along the beaches.....not an element of first choice.....Oaxacan coast looks preferable.....or maybe Michoacan coast.... :light:

The Homeless get a break on those Property Taxes !

Speaking of the Big-Cities Tent-Trash Troops, they are (for the most part) Chemically-Addicted and/or Mentally-Disturbed Dregs who (thanks to Liberals) Benefit(?) from our inability to confine and treat them.

Thankfully, they DO mostly congregate in the larger cities where those of us who don't can regard them as "oddities" viewed only on TV or in the newspapers.

The question is are they homeless because they want to be or because they have to be.

I have known a few homeless in San Diego and they want to be that way. A few I've talked to here in Bakersfield also want to be and those that don't go to the homeless shelter for help. Here there are many places they go for a free meal.

I spent a week along the coastline riding moto two years ago....Nexpa was home for that time and a great sleepy community (surfers and fishing)....Just south of Tecoman there were more "tourist" accommodation options along the coast I would explore next time .

I also rode Hwy 134 and 51 from Zihuatanejo to Taxco despite my hotelier's advice (unsafe)....but the guys at the Pemex and a Federale group parked in the shade said it would be safe......made the trip with no narco issues, despite the area being rife with such problems.....
