Need explanation of La Fonda(s)

Santiago - 9-4-2015 at 05:59 AM

We are getting confused about the various La Fondas.
We have always eaten at B. We once stayed in a room in C when you could walk to B before they put in the wall. Where is the other La Fonda restaurant, in D?
What is A?

elgatoloco - 9-4-2015 at 08:57 AM

A= Poco Cielo
B= La Fonda 2.0
C= Hotel La Fonda
D= La Fonda 1.0/3.0

The 'original' C & D were owned and operated by Mr. D & his wife for decades. After a labor dispute with the waiters union Mr. D closed 1.0 and took a two week vacation. He then converted his ocean front home B into La Fonda 2.0 and opened with a whole new set of waiters. Many of them former worker bees from 1.0.
In November of 2004 the whole shebang was sold to some 'investors'. 1.0 which had been vacant for along time was converted to a spa and salon social. Last year Mr.D 'reacquired' the Hotel and 1.0 and rebuilt that into La Fonda 3.0

I concur with elgato.

The owner now is Dr. Gary Rettig who we met this week and enjoyed our time with him. His wife told him he needs to get out and mix with the customers and listen to them about concerns or positive reports. We loved our dinner and the view was spectacular, to say the least.

How are Demitri and Gary related, business-wise?

Pescador - 9-4-2015 at 09:25 AM

I have no idea David, but Gary took us around, showed us his new construction where the family will live, and we went to look at a couple of rooms. I do not know when he took charge, but he was a Chiropractor in the States and decided to take this over and run it.

OK, so there are three places to eat: A, B, D and one place to sleep: C.
Is this right? Or can you also get a room at D?

Santiago - 9-4-2015 at 09:32 AM

Oh wait, C is now part of D, right?
I will say this, on our last trip we parked in front of C and walked to B for dinner. When we left, we backed out with the help of an elderly gentleman who made sure no oncoming traffic was coming. When I put it in drive he flipped SWMBO the bird which made for some interesting conversation for the next couple of miles.
We have no idea what we did that was wrong, maybe parked in front of Mr D's property but went to the 'wrong' restaurant?

Who's on first?

Now this should clear it up!

First Base: Who
Second Base: What
Third Base: I Don't Know
Left field: Why
Center field: Because
Pitcher: Tomorrow
Catcher: Today
Shortstop: I Don't Give a Darn

Jim, for some reason my head wants to lean over to view your satellite image! LOL

Here it is looking from the highway, towards the ocean...

A is Poco Cielo and they have rooms for rent and a restaurant.
D is just a restaurant
C is a hotel
B is owned by Gary
C & D owned by Mr. D after being owned by Gary

As the palapa turns, so do the days of our vida locas!

So the hotel-furniture-in-the-street incident of last year was when Mr D foreclosed on the hotel portion from Gary, thus The Wall? I've never eaten at D so I think we will give that a try.

durrelllrobert - 9-4-2015 at 10:42 AM

Wasn't there also an issue about the lower levels of B extending into the Federal Zone without a concession?

Udo - 9-4-2015 at 11:31 AM

There still is, Bob.

Ate at 3.0 a couple of months ago. Made me nostalgic for the good old days, like the time when my wife and I stayed in one of the cabana rooms just below the main hotel. The west wall of the shower was a full length window looking down on the beach. I was out in the lineup with a few friends when one of them said, "hey, check out the chick up there taking a shower. Isn't that your room?" Indeed it was. I started waving frantically, my showering wife finally noticed, and then waved back, to the cheers of my friends. Then she suddenly realized that we could all see her and snatched the curtain closed. My friends and I paddled in and went up to the restaurant for lunch. When my wife walked out onto the restaurant patio to join us, she received a standing ovation. Ah, good times.

DanO has a great story there. I "know a guy" that was eating and dancing the night away at La Fonda, with his girlfriend and their female acquaintance, to the sounds of the live band. One thing led to another and the three tried to get a room at La Fonda. They were booked, but some local gringo offered this nice threesome a nightly rate of $50 for his guest house in La Mision.

The good old days...........

If those walls could talk. . . . Another time, my wife and I were staying at the hotel, in another of the cabana rooms, the roof of which you could get to from the adjacent hotel patio. We met up with my sister and her jokester boyfriend, who'd been on a camping trip through the southwest for several weeks. Everyone, especially my sister and the boyfriend, had plenty of drinks at dinner, and we all retired for the evening, my wife and I to our cabana with a lovely romantic fire burning in the fireplace, my sister and the boyfriend to their hotel room. Or so I thought. The boyfriend waited a bit, then climbed up on our roof and tossed a firecracker down our chimney. It exploded in the fire, sending sparks and embers flying all over the room and pretty much killing the romantic mood. But karma, as the saying goes, is a b*tch. The boyfriend fled back their room and crawled into bed with my very drunk sister, who promptly threw up all over him.
