Any one getting FMM when staying North of Ensenada

We have our residency cards so we are a bit out of the loop. Our daughter is coming to visit for a few days days and will be driving down. According to Discover Baja the FMM rules have changed and everyone is required to get an FMM even if going to the border areas. The only place I find this information is on their website. Does anyone know if this is factual. They will stop and get an FMM if necessary but want to make sure that we are not playing into some hype.

only required for walking across. no one will check between Ens and the border.

I realized I wasn't clear on part of my original post. Discover Baja eluded that your car insurance might be invalid with out an FMM
Anyone know if that is true. As our daughter was planning on driving down

Many of the insurance websites note insurance "may" be invalid, etc.

Looking at a Ace Seguros policy I bought from Baja Bound for a recent trip, it states:

SECTION 6.0 - EXCLUSIONS

This policy does not provide assistance coverages for the following:

...8. The Insured is illegally in the country...

Many of the insurance websites note insurance "may" be invalid, etc.

The FMM regs have been changing frequently lately, but I've always been under the impression that a permit is required throughout Baja for stays exceeding 72 hours. I haven't heard of any changes to this requirement.

That concerns me also, leaving it up to the Ins Co to deceide if
the ploicy is valid, at the least having to explain to a
city cop, Hwy Cop, IF they would ask, that no I don't have
a tourist card, would not be in a situation I would care to
be in. Read a report the other day, someone charged the
full amount for a 7 day fmm. this may be an abnormality,
I'm under the impression the 7 day was free

That is also the way it has ALWAYS been in my readings and travels Dennis. 72 hours anywhere, and anytime south of the 'Border Zone' ... where ever they decide that should be (typically in the past, Maneadero).

The 7 day is free. She should it just to be on the safe side. Easy to get at the SI crossing.

We recently did a trip to San Pedro Mártir from San Diego. I was the only one of six with Permanent Residency. For peace of mind we decided to get FMMs for the five. It's easy. At the San Ysidro crossing pull over to the far right to Mexican customs before entering the inspection lanes. Park and go inside. Officials were friendly and helpful. No charge for the 3-day trip south of Ensenada. At no point on the whole trip were we asked to prove we entered legally. Both cars carried Mexican insurance. I would recommend getting the FMM. If there had been an accident or we had been asked for FMM, we would have avoided any problem.
