Punta Final to LA Bay - Again

 Pages:  1

Graham - 10-18-2015 at 02:09 PM

Did this journey on foot in 1983. Part of my Into a Desert Place story.

The cliffs and the rocks and the wildness of it all nearly ate me up... and didn't do a lot for my attire.

Now 32 years later, hoping to re-do it on my blue Cobra Tandem sit-on-top kayak. If the weather cooperates looking forward to departing Bahia Gonzaga/Punta Final this Friday and paddling and drifting very slowly down the rugged and remote coast to LA Bay. Wanted to do this last year but had to return to England to help out a sick brother.

Praying it will be very boring and uninteresting... and I can shoot hundreds of pictures as opposed to the 2-3 rolls of film I had back in 83.

Allowing a month. Plenty of time to smell the flowers. Life's too short to hurry. Expect many wind delays and hikes inland. Maybe a little El Nino rain. But who knows what El Nino could dish out... might blow me back to Gonzaga.

I'll have my Spot to tell of my whereabouts.

Returning to the now abandoned(?) fishcamp of Calamajue will bring back some special memories of a wonderful week sharing the lives of these shark fishermen and their families.

Any boaters crossing paths... would never say no to a couple of gallons of water.

I should be on the water on days like these...

Tioloco - 10-18-2015 at 02:27 PM

Graham-
That 1983 trip sounds like a lot of fun. The fish camp was abandoned when I stopped by 2 years ago (Calamajue). Did you walk the coastline all the way?

BajaRat - 10-18-2015 at 02:38 PM

Hope to see you in BOLA when you arrive....
Have fun, safe travels and lots of pics.
Lionel

David K - 10-18-2015 at 02:59 PM

Wonderful to hear you get back to the place that beckons us all here on Nomad!

Your walk along the coast, right at water's edge, even when Ed Wills (The "King" of Gonzaga Bay, page 65) warned you it couldn't be done, is a testament to your perseverance!

We look forward to your safe return.

Check your u2u regarding Spot postings.

Rossman - 10-18-2015 at 04:15 PM

Sounds like a great adventure. I have thought of doing that trip myself via kayak. My biggest concern would be the wind. I have kayak ed in the area of Bahia Gonzaga and Punta Finale on many ocaisionally and as you probably know about he wind can be surprising in its direction and intensity. The input that I got from veterans of that coastline was that the wind delays and a decent spot to put a shore with the kayak may not mesh very well. Obviously if you have walked the shoreline you may have a different view of this problem. Stay safe and look forward to a trip report. Take plenty of water.

Graham - 10-18-2015 at 07:59 PM

Thanks David... it will be great knowing you're receiving my Spot signals and posting online.

My kayak is a slow old cow compared to a fast sea kayak... but it's very stable and can carry hundreds of pounds both on top and below decks.

Yes, the wind is the biggest concern... and without a calm day or better a moderate tail wind I'm going nowhere.

If I'm watchful and careful, I'd have to be really unlucky to get caught under cliffs with no place to land.

Expect I'm going to lose at least 10 lbs doing all the paddling and hiking... I always do once I leave the computer and the car behind.

And will I be ready for tacos and beer when I get to LA Bay. If I ever get there.

ehall - 10-19-2015 at 07:23 AM

sounds like a great adventure. Have fun.

hombre66 - 10-19-2015 at 08:58 PM

Hey Graham...Don't forget to take "Live at Leeds" and some headphones if you need to stay awake out there.

Desert Rat - 10-19-2015 at 10:26 PM

Hip-hip hooray, another adventure on the way!
Stay alert and don't get hurt.
Have fun in the sun and "gitter done."
Paddle your boat and hike places remote.
Come back safe and well, with a great story to tell.

Graham - 10-20-2015 at 09:47 AM

I'll be back... even if I have to walk out of there.

Not sure which way the wind will be blowing or how fierce. Might just have to make camp and enjoy the simple life with lots of exploring inland and into the canyons.

Hope my adventures aren't as scary and death defying as your last Baja outing Desert Rat. I still marvel that you're still with us after what you endured and overcame. Truly inspirational Ronnie. You are Airborne tough.

My hearing has never been quite the same since I was at that Who - Live at Leeds concert back in 1970.

But I'm sure the tension being on the water will keep me alert... and always prefer to be tuned into what's happening around me, even the joys of silence.

BornFisher - 10-20-2015 at 09:57 AM

Graham-- wishing you a fair breeze for your next journey. Best of luck, I`m betting on you and against the troubles you may find!!

DawnPatrol - 10-20-2015 at 01:30 PM

Graham, wishing you a great trip..
Met you for the first time at a baseball Spring Training trip to an Angels game in Palm Springs many years ago.
You were blown away that someone recognized you (this was shortly after your book)!
We also enjoyed you after that when you spoke at the San Diego Rod & Reel Club
Cheers!
Alan

BajaGeoff - 10-20-2015 at 01:40 PM

Very cool Graham! We wish you safe travels and an amazing adventure. Looking forward to a new story and some pictures.

Graham - 10-21-2015 at 07:10 AM

Thanks Geoff... whatever happens there's bound to be a few stories and pictures from this.

Dawn Patrol... I still remember the shock of being recognized at that game. Doesn't happen too often... unless I'm in Baja with a loaded donkey beside me... And weren't you there that day Mr. Fisher? Thanks for all the kind thoughts... I'll recall them when I'm camped in a howling storm in a week or two.

Hope to depart Punta Final Friday. Will probably look a little overloaded till I go through stuff and get organized. Full moon approaching with high tides and strong currents, I might be tempted to do a little moonlight paddling to take advantage of conditions. My idea of kayaking with wind and current doing most of the work.

Weighed 150 lbs this morning. If trips lasts more than a couple of weeks, I'll probably be closer to 140 lbs. Love my Baja diet... works every time, weight loss without even trying.

Almost hope nobody spoils it by bringing me any cold beers or parachuting down a barrel of Heineken.

Sure you do.. right!

Graham - 10-21-2015 at 08:39 AM

Imagine the joy seeing that exiting a Cessna and drifting down on a golf umbrella... especially when you haven't had a sniff of beer for two weeks.

bacquito - 10-21-2015 at 08:44 AM

Sounds great, hope you have a successful venture.

Yes and so was Ms Fisher and maybe Wil??? I remember we went to some slot canyons with a big stash of beer at some point. Miss those Angel spring training 2 week sessions. Seeing Reggie Jackson, Rod Carew, Tony Gwynn, Dawn Patrol, and many others.
PS to Dawn Patrol-- I remember you coming up to Graham when we were walking out of the game. Amazing stuff goes on around here!!!

Graham - 10-22-2015 at 12:26 AM

Amazing to recall all this... hi to Ms. Fisher and the family.

BajaGeoff - 10-22-2015 at 02:28 PM

Maybe we can send some beer in for you by drone...

Graham's First Spot Signal

David K - 10-22-2015 at 08:24 PM

ALL OK!

David K - 10-23-2015 at 02:49 PM

Possible Track

David K - 10-24-2015 at 09:57 AM

Here is a estimated track of Graham's first kayak day... 7.5 miles:

fandango - 10-25-2015 at 07:39 AM

Has graham checked in since his first days paddle?

Graham-3b

Yesterday afternoon (Sat 10-24-15) I got his Spot signal and it was the same location as Friday's (in the small bay near Punta Final). For clarity, I will call that one Graham-3a.

Just now, my email has a new Spot signal (from 5:12 am Sunday) ... Graham-3b.

fandango - 10-25-2015 at 09:05 AM

Good to see his progress.
Thanks.

PUERTO CALAMAJUÉ

David K - 10-26-2015 at 09:24 AM

Graham's kayaking distance from Punta Final to Puerto Calamajué was 12 miles...

David K - 10-26-2015 at 05:07 PM

Spot signal today at 11:26 am PDT has Graham in the same place and "everything is okay" message.

TMW - 10-26-2015 at 06:48 PM

Maybe he is helping the family pack up their shells.

David K - 10-26-2015 at 11:08 PM

The place has been reported deserted, so who know?

By-the-way, the maps I make with the path lines are NOT Graham's Spot device. I am just estimating how far he traveled by kayak each day he is on the water using a possible route he would take along the coast.

David K - 10-27-2015 at 08:59 AM

Graham is southbound again... I will post his new location map tonight.

ehall - 10-27-2015 at 10:15 AM

Thanks DK. Looks like he is moving right along.

bajaguy - 10-27-2015 at 10:19 AM

Will be in BOLA tomorrow afternoon/evening. Hopefully see him there

Desert Rat - 10-27-2015 at 03:48 PM

Thank you for the updates, David.

TUESDAY 1 PM PDT

David K - 10-27-2015 at 04:43 PM

David K - 10-27-2015 at 04:51 PM

It the estimated track of his third leg, the distance was 15.8 miles.

David K - 10-28-2015 at 05:50 PM

This estimated kayak route is 6.8 miles long.

OCEANUS - 10-28-2015 at 07:37 PM

That stretch of coast where Graham is spending the night tonight (10/28) has some conspicuous rock formations along the cliffsides. I would not be surprised if Graham takes pictures of them because they are very unique.
In this same area is a very lucrative fishing spot for both deep yellowtail and white seabass. What a sleigh ride that would be for Graham on the good ol' cobra tandem!

Yes, wild looking alien rocks!

Here is a close up look at Graham's Spot location from 10-28 (Wed.) PM. (There was NO SPOT SIGNAL today, so far)...

OCEANUS - 10-29-2015 at 07:38 PM

One of the reasons Graham may not have posted today is because there were very strong west winds (30-40 mph!) forcasted for L.A. Bay on the Sailflow site.

http://www.sailflow.com/spot/1319

Typically, when L.A. Bay is blowing, so is Guadalupe Bay to the north because the winds funnel right out of the canyons in a similar fashion. The winds are expected to persist throughout tonight and tomorrow before they taper into Saturday.

Moving south across to Guadalupe Bay would be treacherous in these conditions and would require Graham to either wait it out on a sheltered beach or secure his gear and hug the shoreline.

I'm curious t see when and where his next Spot ping registers his position.

bajaguy - 10-29-2015 at 08:23 PM

BOLA had high winds last night and this morning. Heavy chop and whiitecaps in the bay. Eating breakfast with several fishermen at Costa del Sol who didn't go out because of the wind

David K - 10-30-2015 at 07:59 AM

Cliffy - 10-31-2015 at 06:27 AM

Once he rounds the big point just north of Isla Smith the wind can howl out that canyon with all the sand in it, Gee I wonder why its full of sand? Once (and only once) i was out there from BOLA north west of Isla Smith 6 or 8 miles in a 15 aluminum skiff with a 20 hp tiller motor when the wind came up. the seas were as deep as I was long, 15 ft swells. Couldn't see anything but green water when in the bottom of the swell. They were just cresting with foam. Got turned around and heeded for the island and decided to go around the down wind side (outside) as it looked nasty on the inside. We were way out there. Once on the back side it was calm and we waited out the blow for hours and got into BOLA at dark. Learned a lot on that trip like the only thing between me and Acapulco was water. It would be a long float next to an overturned boat.

OCEANUS - 10-31-2015 at 07:56 AM

Cliffy
Sounds like you were located near Guadalupe Bay which is where those west winds get funneled and fierce.

According to Sailflow, Graham has a weekend of calm winds and water before the next west wind event forecasted to blow starting Monday night. He could easily make that stretch to LA Bay in three days assuming that's what he wants to do.

Guadalupe Bay has a beautiful, post card quality beach on its south end. I would wager that Graham stays near there on his next night away from his present location.

Once around the point between Guadalupe and Isla Alcatraz, Graham has a number of haul out options before arriving in LA Bay, including the beach that Mike Humphreville and his family lived on in his famed account "In the Shadow of the Volcano".

The good news being that the stretch of coast has high mountains and cliffs which will continue to shelter Graham from any more west wind events between now and then.

David K - 10-31-2015 at 08:59 AM

New Spot Signal 7:25 PDT this morning (Saturday 10-31) comes from the same beach and an all OK message. Seems to be waiting out the wind!

Cliffy - 10-31-2015 at 03:38 PM

YUP that's the spot but I was WAY off shore (where I shouldn't have been in an oh 2 small boat but I was young and impetuous) when the winds came up. I never went that far off shore again in that little tin boat!

Mark_BC - 11-1-2015 at 11:01 AM

Cool, will be interesting to see where he goes up the canyons, maybe Asamblea. I was thinking my next trip would be a bike trip north through that route, jumping from one valley to the next. I'd go down Botica wash this time instead to make things quicker, plus I haven't been down that one yet. There are no oases north of Asamblea / Salsipuedes so you'd have to go down to the ocean to desalinate water in between each one, and then take a few days to ride / push over to the next. That would be some pretty remote territory. Maybe not take the packraft, to save on weight.

Something like this:

David K - 11-1-2015 at 11:10 AM

Hi Mark, yes, as you know best... there are exciting canyons in there! It drew mystery author Erle Stanley Gardner to hire helicopters to explore back in the early 1960's! He was fascinated with the palm-lined canyons and how some were burned, without human activity.

David K - 11-1-2015 at 12:12 PM

"he better get jamming. +20MPH winds coming tomorrow thru friday: http://sailflow.com/map#28.935,-104.762,6,1,!1319,2"

Unfortunately, he lost a good day of no wind above Remedios - probably waiting it out until the coast was clear and has had relatively perfect weather since.

What concerns me is that he may not know what is coming this afternoon and choose to spend the night in Guadalupe Bay. There is a reason why the south end has a huge sand dune! As long as he makes it out of Guadalupe Bay to the south the west winds won't be so much of an issue for him.

Tonight's Spot ping is an important one...

Tioloco - 11-2-2015 at 03:52 PM

I doubt he cares if he has to sit it out for a few days while the wind does its thing. It is not a race.

Interesting that Sailflow and Windalert, two wind prediction sites owned by the same company, could have predictions that disagree so much. Windalert show winds through Wednesday at less than half of what Sailflow is showing. Windfinder is in agreement with Windalert.

http://www.windfinder.com/forecast/bahia-de-los-angeles

According to Windalert and Windfinder, there wont be daytime winds under 15 knots until Saturday or Sunday.

The town of Bahia de los Angeles is only showing a 9mph breeze out of the west right now.

What's the latest report? Have we pinpointed the location and time of his morning ritual? Maybe coordinates of his first granola bar of the day? Maybe we can get a Google earth picture of his toilet paper remnants. Hope he is having a fun trip.

I was happy to have found the weather forecast site for BoLA but then I discovered that the weather records are identical for BoLA, San Felipe and Guerrerro Negro! So which one is it????

http://www.accuweather.com/en/mx/bahia-de-los-angeles/231766...

Edit: It seems San Felipe now has its own weather report.

It looks like it's been pretty hot down there, 35 C yesterday, although that's not too hot really, I'm just stuck in 5-10 C weather here in Canada.

keep in mind that there are no "official" reporting stations down there. it's fairly easy to extrapolate when the winds are going to blow and realize that the temps given are about 10 degrees too low! does it really matter if the wind is blowing 15 or 30 knots? anything in between is not conducive to on-water activity.

I would think a west wind, certainly up to maybe 20kts, might be maneuverable in that area. If he hugs shore, no wind waves have a chance to develop with such a short reach/fetch, whatever the term is. I have checked on my boat anchored about 50-75 feet from shore at Guillermos, during a 45-50 knot west wind and there wasnt much going on around the boat. Another 100 feet out, it was serious white-capping.

That BOLA station is a bit suspect IMO. If you look at it's readings on WU for the last eleven hours the gusts have been EXACTLY 24 mph. That's unrealistic for all the gusts over an eleven hour period to be EXACTLY 24 mph, especially when there were large periods in that eleven hours where the winds were under 8 mph.

Making good time-great adventure

David K - 11-4-2015 at 11:03 PM

I can only imagine the choppy conditions caused by the wind has him hugging the shore and not making good distance possible. Tomorrow marks 14 days since leaving Gonzaga's Rancho Grande beach.

David K - 11-5-2015 at 09:46 AM

OK amigos, no Spot signal as of 8:45 this morning, and I must leave for work now... If I see anything on my phone today regarding Graham, I will post a note.. and make a new map when I am home, if he moves today.

David K - 11-5-2015 at 01:51 PM

At 9:12 this morning, Graham sent a Spot signal from near or at the fish camp at the end of the road at Bahia Guadalupe.

woody with a view - 11-5-2015 at 02:33 PM

can't wait to hear about the adventure. where is his welcoming party located?

Nov. 5, 2015 9:12 am & 3:05 pm PST SPOT SIGNALS

David K - 11-5-2015 at 05:13 PM

ALL OK, NO PROBLEMAS (standard message). Graham is at the fish camp shack, at the end of the road from the dry lake, north of the Bahía de L.A. highway.

Nice Beach!

David K - 11-6-2015 at 09:21 AM

If Graham stays here today, I will add a distance travel estimate from last night's Spot.

BajaNomad (Doug) and family have camped there or very close and posted some nice photos of the beach at Ensenada Alcatraz.

He's good friends with Antonio at Archelon and I've talked to him there, he sets up camp in one of the palapas. That would be a good place to look for him.

Photo on Ensenada Alcatraz (today's location) on pg 3 of this thread.

At 6:42 am, Nov. 7, 2015, a new Spot signal from Graham shows him remaining in the sand dunes at Ensenada Alcatraz.

DosMars - 11-7-2015 at 05:40 PM

Beautiful beach, anyone know if the road in is passable yet?

Looking forward to hearing about how the trip went!
