Hi Folks! First time poster, long time lurker...

We're heading down to Baja again in November with a couple 4x4's, planning on base-camping in Mulegé for a few days. We'll have another couple with us and a the ladies prefer flush toilets and warm showers. I don't mind a pit toilet and have an on-board shower, but need to appease the ladies who want a little more. I've been searching online for a nice, quiet campground around Mulegé but realize that online info doesn't always live up to how things really are and would love some first-hand information.

Any intel on a beach campground that offers hot showers and flush toilets?

Buenaventura sounds pretty good so far, hot showers and flush toilets will make the girls happy!

I camped at Playa Santispac last November. I was able to take a shower at the restaurant at the north end of the beach. That was a bonus on top of finding good food, and good conversations.

It may not be a quiet as you want, close to the highway, and sometimes is busy, but I like it.

I would also like to hear about camping and shower possibilities at Buenaventura, I have not stayed there since Mark and Olivia still ran the motel.

I have been reading a bit about Mark and Olivia's (sometimes hair-raising) experience down there, I take it they're no longer running Buenaventura then?

Look for the entrance to "Los Naranjos" somewhere near Kilometer 118.5 south of Mulege before Santispac; exit right on a curve so be really careful... If you stay there tell'em that Carlos and Olga from Chula Vista referred you... they're really nice folks...!!! Ahh... and the price is unbeatable...!!! and if you wish I think you can also camp on the beach as well for a lesser fee, I don't know what the shower or toilets look like for the camping accommodations.

They still operate the restaurant, and I intend to stop there the next trip. I just don't know if they cater to beach campers.

Yup. I've camped there several times, great place, great hosts. South end of the bahia, far from town, nothing wrong with that. Fantastic place for sunrises/sunsest and everything in-between so far as I am concerned!

... an inexpensive yet very hospitable motel....I usually camp out, but this is my favorite I've come across in Baja.

You used to be able to park in the hardware store parking lot across the street... Part of the same family me thinks... you wouldn't want to tie up a spot all day tho...

As of 3 months ago, Mark & Olivia had all of Playa Buenaventura... their place (Cantina/rental homes) and the hotel next door, trashed by Muñoz and/or his people. As I reported in my July 2015 trip report, they may fix a couple of the hotel rooms to rent, but it was so destroyed by the 'Black Hand' after he was thrown out by a judge and police enforcement (as I understand it). Mark & Olivia do not have the resources or energy left in them and will probably try to sell it?

Most of the beaches are only 20 minutes from Mulege and they do not have flush toilets. You can tent camp at Cuesta Real on the rio and they have both flush toilets and semi warm showers. Also tent camping at Don Chanos and they have outhouses and showers. Both about 60 to 100 pesos per night. Or stay at a hotel for 5-600. Staying in town you can enjoy the events, good restaurants and visit a different beach each day

Wow, that sucks... didn't realize the harassment was ongoing and still fairly recent. We may not stay at Playa Buenaventura afterall.

Good to know, we were looking forward to camping on the beach but if we want the nice amenities, perhaps a hotel stay is best. For me, if we're camping at least I know the condition of my bedding, I have a hot shower onboard, etc.

Before we built our house, we always rented from Cliff. He has rentals of all sizes, all equipped with anything you need. He has a website at:

Here's the deal with Buenaventura; they do have a guest house that may or may not be vacant. They used to run a generator for a few hours to heat up water for their shower, but as they have to haul their water in to the restaurant you have to 'conserve' on usage.... and that's IF they're still renting the small house. It's still a great deal; you can try to contact them (Mark and Oli) at:

I haven't seen 'em in 3 - 4 years, but was their neighbor for almost 15 years. You'll be fine there, again, IF they still rent the casita. See if they're still at this addy; u2u me with the answer please.

Ditto regarding Cliff's place in the Oasis on the river; he has several houses and as has been mentioned previously it's nice to visit a different beach each day. If you want to go to town for dinner at night it's a drive from the bay and staying along the river close to town gives you more choices at night.

Cliff's places are all top notch; clean with comfortable beds, hot water, flush toilets, full kitchens, free wi-fi, etc. etc. Can't recommend highly enough.
