Secret trip... Mission accomplished!!!

fishbuck - 11-18-2016 at 08:31 PM

I have been holding back on you all.
I will fly down from Seattle next friday and then drive down to San Quintin for a quick visit.
Dollar rental car for $14/day plus Mex insurance. Not sure where I will stay but nothing special. Maybe 1 night at Santa Maria beach. Haven't been over there in a while. As much as I like Jardines it's always a bit crowded for my taste. Love the restaurant though.
Mostly the trip is to take care of paperwork for my fishcamp. I think it has been 2 years since I've had a chance to fly down.
Certainly not as easy as when I lived in Newport Beach.
I have no ties in California anymore so I don't need to fly into Orange County airport.
My 1st time flying into San Diego.
I will not miss the drive from the border to the OC. That litterally ruins the trip especially after a 2-3 hour border crossing. Talk about buzzkill.
Since I was there last I found out that a enviormental org named Terra Peninsular has bought over 400 acres of land including the peninsula which they call Punta Mezo Reserve. Also Monte Cineza which I consider "my" personal volcano.
There intent is to prevent developement which was the intent for the area when I bought my lots.
So things have changed a little since I started this little adventure about 11 years ago.
Their number 1 goal is to protect the 25000 or so black brant geese that winter there.
They should be there now so I will get a chance to say hi to my little feathered amigos. Big money developers wanted to dredge the bay but that would ruin the eel grass that the geese love.
More to come.

AKgringo - 11-18-2016 at 09:02 PM

One year I had a summer job working for facilities maintenance for the National Weather Service. One of the project was at Cold Bay Alaska, and biologists were studying the black brant that feed on eel grass in Izembeck Lagoon.

They would feed voraciously at low tide, and on some cue, they would circle up in a flock of thousands, and then settla back down to feed some more.

Every day after the weather balloon launch, the biologists woud come in and check the wind direction at various altitudes. He told me that when the brant, get to the right altitude, with the right wind direction, they take off for a non stop flight to Southern CA and Baja.

He said that the flight takes about 46 hours and the birds will lose about a third of their body weight! If they land anywhere that does not have ample food for them, they probably would be too weak to take flight again.

NON STOP.... AK to Baja!

How is the trip secret if you blab about it here?

Yes, the Terra peninsular efforts are great. Interesting story, some locals tried to claim a huge swath of TP's land by filing false paperwork,... I think the legal dispute is still ongoing.
Maybe someone from SQ can fill us in on the story, eh?

BajaBlanca - 11-20-2016 at 06:16 PM

Have a most wonderful trip - how lucky are you that your area will be preserved forever?!

fishbuck - 11-21-2016 at 02:39 PM

Thank you Blanca. The nature preserves are a good turn of events.
Yes, only 4 days to go! I'm excited
I called Dollar this morning to verify the their cars can be rented for Baja.
They can but the unpleasant surprise is the mandatory insurance is $38/day.
Fortunately the car is cheap at $14/day. But still, ouch...
But worth it.

fishbuck - 11-23-2016 at 05:43 PM

Last workday before "secret trip". Very excited.
Will spend Thanksgiving with family (son and my girlfriend) and jet out of Seatac for Sandi-eggo.
Quick shuttle to Dollar rentacar and across I go.
Does Ensenada celebrate Thanksgiving? Meaning will public and private offices be open?

fishbuck - 11-24-2016 at 01:22 AM

B - 1 day and counting...

Now just Thanksgiving/packing day and the mission begins...

It's a US holiday, but lots of restaurants have a Thanksgiving menu. Other than that, it's business as usual.

fishbuck - 11-24-2016 at 02:09 PM

That's what I was hoping. I have a busy morning planned for Ensenada on Friday.
Does anybody know if Enrique Villareal is still practicing law or did he retire?
I know he just spent a few years as the "police commissioner" of Ensenada but stepped down last spring.
I have consulted with him in the past and he is a good guy.

bajaguy - 11-25-2016 at 12:03 AM

If you have some time Friday, we will be home all day....hit me up for a cold Pacifico!!

Did you get the free 7 day card and if you did, did they stamp your passport and alert you that it must be returned to them (or any INM) when you leave?

If yes, the Tecate INM is not hard to get to then go to the end of the line for the U.S.

DENNIS - 11-25-2016 at 02:15 PM

Anthony's is only three road-cokes away. Say HI to your niños.

When we have taken visitors to San Ysidro INM for their "free" FMM's, sometimes they stamp the passport, sometime they don't. Never heard anyone at INM tell our visitors they must return the 7 day document

Finally made it. Got to Hotel La Villa at about 7:30pm.
Long day.
Lots of traffic on the highway. Torn up from Santo Tomas to San Vincente. Slow going.
Otherwise no issues.
Beautiful day.

fishbuck - 11-26-2016 at 09:28 PM

Hi Nomads!
Was at my place today. Wow
Been super busy with details.
Will fill in the blanks and post a few photos in while.

fishbuck - 11-27-2016 at 07:18 PM

Hi all. Still in San Quintin.
Put myself on Standard Mexico time by getting a flat in my little rental car.
By the time I got it fixed and went back to the bay to find my hub cap, I couldn't make it back for check out time. So I stayed the day.
Sunny and breezy about 70. Very warm in the sun and out of the breeze.

fishbuck - 11-28-2016 at 08:37 PM

Ok. At the Motel 6 by San Diego airport. What a trip.
I took some good pictures and will post them in a bit. I couldn't get photobucket to work when I was in San Quintin.
Weather was perfect. Didn't get rain until the border.
About an 1:15 to get across. Not bad.
A very good trip. Didn't want to leave. A bit of a whirlwind but I like doing that sometimes.
Looking forward to the day when I'm down there with no real schedule to keep.

Yes, I got the free card. Stamped it and my passport. He ask me how long I was staying. I said 1 week. Stamp, stamp and off I went.

David K - 11-28-2016 at 09:22 PM

So, you're back! Did they say anything about returning the free FMM?
Did you get up to North County at all?

Pacific sunset over a San Quintin volcano. From my yard.

No mention of returning returning the FMM.

I barely made it to the Motel 6. I left San Quintin this morning at 6 and spent about 2-3 hours in Ensenada taking care of legal stuff.
A long day.

fishbuck - 11-28-2016 at 10:20 PM

A short ride from my place to the oceanfront for some raw Pacific beauty. Pacific surf crashing on black volcanic rock.
San Martin island in the background Also a volcano.

fishbuck - 11-28-2016 at 10:25 PM

Another crashing wave.

David K - 11-28-2016 at 10:50 PM

Thanks DK.
On the plane in San Diego. O dark 30 departure.
Looks like I will make it to work today.

Back home in good ole Everett Washington USA!
Wow! What an excellent and fun trip.
I had a great time and saw a lot and did a lot in a short time. My neck is sore from looking as all the interesting things along the way.
I loved every minute of it!

A couple of truck loads of white sand would be nice. I think baja has some.

Bennie&Bruce - 11-29-2016 at 06:04 PM

Looks like a nice tranquil place to live.

fishbuck - 11-29-2016 at 06:18 PM

Thanks yeah it's far enough from town and the highway. Very natural.
I could hear faint music from the old mill but that was all.

fishbuck - 11-30-2016 at 07:26 PM

I am still aglow from the thrill of my trip.

Note the cute little rental car. He is about to "boldly go where no rental car has gone before" and probably shouldn't go again.
I had just gotten my flat fixed in town and had just located my hub cap.
I decided to take a "short cut" over to the oceanfront. The repaired tire was a bit iffy even on pavement.
The road was rough enough that I didn't realize the tire was flat for a good 2-3 miles and keep driving. The sidewall was beat up and the inside had grooves worn in it from the rim.
Even the tire man was shaking his head. He poured a pile rubber out of it. I told him it was fine and to mount it. It held air... so off I went.
I ended up in a no-mans land of discarded oyster shells and miscellanious sharpedged debris...
It was 2 fisted and whiteknucled.
But the tire held and the little car made a decent jeep. The "road" was tight, steep, and rocky.
I was to afraid to stop for pictures.
I came back on the "main" road past the oyster farms.
The road is graded, graveled and even has signs now.
Paving can't be far off.
It was barely a road when I first got there 11 years back.

fishbuck - 12-1-2016 at 01:21 PM

Don't touch my volcanoes please!
A new sign, a new fence, I think there is a ranger now somewhere.

A new variation on the roadside shrine?

I didn't know Chalin. But I can surmise 2 things.
He was a fellow mariner and he was well loved.
This shrine is literally in the middle of no-where on the road into my place.

BajaBlanca - 12-1-2016 at 02:16 PM

He sure was well loved! What a homage to him. Do you suppose he died out there?

Looks like your trip was indeed fun.

fishbuck - 12-1-2016 at 02:44 PM

I suppose it's possible to find out. But I think I will just believe that he did and honor him in that way. The sea was obviously very important to him.

fishbuck - 12-1-2016 at 02:53 PM

Some of the flowers were actually desert succulents planted on the deck of his boat. His cargo. Seems he is still steaming along...
There was a gallon jug nearby with water.
I paid tribute by watering the flowers. I hope I was a worthy deckhand.

Hey Mike:

Sorry you couldn't stick around a few more days - I was SUPER busy and on a conference call when you stopped by. Maybe next time...

That marker is for Carlos Muñoz Hernandez, was also known as "Chalin" out here at La Chorera. He was the nephew of my business partner and was a very friendly character when sober. Let's just say that he had a very colored history sometimes when he drank. He worked as a fisherman in various jobs around our area and was always kind to Cristina and I. He was one of the first responders on scene to help us when we were attacked several years ago.

He died at that very spot one late night in spring of 2015. While riding home on his motorcycle he hit a rock and he flew over the handlebars. He was following his girlfriend Lupe from Pedregal to La Chorera and when he failed to show up she backtracked, finding him lying on the road there. He died in her arms before the ambulance could arrive.

Chalin was a tragic yet classic case of living fast and dying even faster.

RIP

I suspect luck had nothing to do with it. He probably worked hard to get where he is at. Many do not and just complain. Hope he knows not to invest in any more than he can afford to lose. Good on you Mr Fishbuck.

A couple of guest bedrooms and a little kichenette/living room. The separate building to the left is a party room with bar and dance floor.

But maybe you guys will come visit me and I will need a disco too!
