BajaNomad

residence issue

BajaBlanca - 12-8-2016 at 07:00 PM

Hi all, our new insurance plan requires that we have an "address" in California on record so that we can use California doctors.

Does anyone know of a mail service or other service that would work for us?

Thanks in advance and time is of the essence ... we have to the end of the month to do this or we lose our insurance.

woody with a view - 12-8-2016 at 08:08 PM

What about mom's?

DENNIS - 12-8-2016 at 08:15 PM

Mail services, such as Postal Annex, are street addresses. That works for me with AAA. Not that it should matter, but don't use the PMB. Instead, use apt or the #-sign.

BajaBlanca - 12-9-2016 at 04:05 AM

Mom's is an option as is Les's sons but we are looking for other options.

Thanks Dennis, sounds OK.

Bob and Susan - 12-9-2016 at 07:56 AM

using postal annex addresses for stuff like this could cancel your insurance...

its "skirting" the rules...I know this for a fact...don't let others guide you the wrong way

use "mom's" address

rts551 - 12-9-2016 at 09:25 AM

Blanca, I agree with Bob. You apparently are supposed to be a resident of California for this insurance. Be careful on advice.

DENNIS - 12-9-2016 at 09:51 AM

I'm not going to feel morally corrupt for using it to buy car insurance.
Jeeezo...what are you guys, deciples of Scientology all of a sudden?

Baja was California first!

Many people want to be californians, to enjoy the benefits of the greatest state in the nation,... but they dont want to pay taxes that help make the golden state so golden

Be careful of claiming residency but not filing california tax return. The golden state tax man chases civic scoflaws.

SteveWil - 12-9-2016 at 10:37 AM

I have a friend that got a Mail service in San Diego. That all he did so he could run up to get mail. he is living full time in Mexico, that was all he did. About 18 moths later he got a letter form California asking for taxes as he was a residency do to mail service address. He is still getting letters from them even after getting a lawyer.

SO

Be careful of having an address but not filing california tax return. The golden state tax man chases the smell of money.

Did he have income in Calif? I mean, just because you get your mail there doesn't mean you owe taxes.

NO, never lived there, or work there. only driven through, shopped and picked up mail. Try telling that to Calif.

LancairDriver - 12-9-2016 at 02:49 PM

I moved my home and business out of California to Oregon twenty five years ago and was harassed continuously for taxes on income not earned there for at least five years. I finally told them in very graphic terms in writing where to go. They never had any justification from the beginning and finally went away. They rely on operating by intimidation as the 800 lb Gorilla and it must work for them in most cases.

BajaBlanca - 12-9-2016 at 04:06 PM

LancairDriver can we hire you for the explanation to gvt. in graphic terms!

Oh wait.....Les is really good at that too!

Thanks again all.

WOW. I never imagined. It's like hoodlums selling protection.

bajaguy - 12-9-2016 at 05:35 PM

Yup, California Franchise Tax Board will come after you even if you have a mail drop address only. Been dealing with them for 5 years now with them claiming that I earn income in California. Send their form back with a copy of my Nevada DL and my Mexican Residente Permamente card. They respond with a "OK, you are cleared for this year"........Think I need LancairDriver to write a letter for me

It is so sad that the politicians in California government don't see how they are chasing business and people out of the state. Such a financial drain and loss of jobs! Stupid!!

California is great because of it's public lands, schools, jobs, great cities, incredible infrastructure. Takes taxes to pay for all that. The tax system is progressive. It is fair.
If you don't like California, then move to Kansas and live your republican tax-cutting dream and enjoy a failing state with crappy schools and failing everything.

dk, do you even pay taxes?

California is the 6th largest economy in the world.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis's latest data on state growth showed that California's economic output for 2015 came in at $2.46 trillion.

That number pushes California's economic output above that of France, which pumped out an estimated $2.422 trillion last year.

while France's population comes in around 66.48 million, California's is only about 39.14 million — which means that the US state produces slightly more than France with about 40% fewer people.

The only countries with higher GDP output than California now are the US as a whole, China, Japan, Germany, and the UK.

It is estimated that California's economy grew by 5.7% in 2015 — the second highest growth rate in the US, just behind Oregon's 5.9%.

Just be sure before writing nasty letters you have no bank accounts in California. They will canvas the the entire state looking to confiscate. Your legal fees to recover will wipe out any cash you may recover even winning your case.

My business is here, but it is so reduced it amounts to little. However, my wife's job is here (and she has some seniority), as are her kids and one grandchild... One of my kids has left the state and the other would like to leave. Yes, I pay too much tax for making so little! Yes, I am a minority here... when do I get MY free stuff??? LOL

If its that bad you should leave, just saying. Yes, well aware of where your daughter lives. Taxes in Arizona are less, but believe me so are the services. You have tried our roads out.

DK, I think you used to build irrigation systems? Sounds like you could get work in construction. Construction is going well in so cal, lots of jobs out there. Really is no excuse for not working.

the golden state is relentless in its pursuit of revenue. they have their ways to find you. remarkably resourceful. I would recommend picking almost any other state to claim residency.

I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure California hasn't had the renters' credit for some years.

Not for many years!

AKgringo - 7-5-2017 at 11:14 AM

My voter registration, drivers license, and passport application, all used my Alaska residence address. I also have a residential address in CA for part of the year.

I have properties that I pay taxes on in CA and AK, and have multiple vehicles registered in both states. I have had no issues with the CA franchise tax board, or the DMV in either state about my multiple addresses.

There are other issues with registering a vehicle in CA that make other states a better choice if you have the option.
