Heading to Baja Jan 10

greg4444 - 12-14-2016 at 01:27 PM

Never been there before and looking for someone who wants to tandem along for maybe the first week or longer. Planning on being there about a month. All self contained camping. Two of us and a dog. West coast then over to the gulf.
Not going to rush. Crossing at Tecate.

We went down this past Jan. and loved it.

Where are you leaving from?

San Anselmo Ca just above SF. One day to the border then through it the next day. Looking for a place to camp on the Cal side of the border.
E mail me at gvb1940@gmail.com and we can discusss this further.

Camping at Potrero County Park is pretty convenient for a Tecate crossing.

Thanks wilderone. Another person mentioned that also.

You just never know with us Utah types. A lot of recreational chemicals have been known to happen in the desert.

You know, I think it is those Russian hackers!??

We found it convenient to get the campsite at Potrero County Park then run down to the border and do the paperwork.

Next morning, up early and go through the border quickly.

Ron nailed it!

We've done that very thing a number of times - Portrero Campground is decent, and 15 minutes after you leave the campground you are in Baja. It's only a couple of miles from the border to the Highway 2 Toll Road, and very soon you will enjoy the magnificent views going down the Rumorosa grade. Then a little later you'll be in the southern part of Mexicali and turn south onto Highway 5 toward San Felipe less than two hours away.

Just as you get through the border and approach the plaza/park, to your left a block or so is El Major pan de Tecate - one heck of a bakery - Google it!

If this is to be your first stop in Baja - you won't regret it.

Re:driving thru Tecate with a dog: are they still citing people for not having pets secured in a vehicle?

I recall reading that warning from a few years back. Any updates? Recent citations?

Dogs, and knifes, and - the list goes on

John M - 12-17-2016 at 07:15 PM

I don't recall any very recent stories, but in addition to dog's not being secured there were a number of posts about small knifes (pocket knifes?) in plain view - at the time it was a no, no. Then there were a number of stories about ticket happy motorcycle officers in Tecate.

As you drive through Tecate toward the toll road there are probably a dozen stop signs in varying degree of visibility - you really need to pay attention regardless of what local drivers are doing. A complete stop is to your benefit!

We've driven through Tecate many times and never been stopped by the police but we try to carefully look for and stop where we should. Once on the toll road I'd think everything is back to whatever normal is.

Since from the border to the toll road is such a short distance, it makes no sense to me to drive at anything more than a crawl.

Waited too long! Totally understandable... let's hope this gasoline mess is cleared up really soon. They don't like paying the real cost of 40 cents more a gallon, how does this shutdown of all gasoline distribution make one's ability to make money make the cost better? Unless of course, they get the government to raise everyone's taxes to subsidize the cost of gasoline. Do they even have income tax in Mexico? What will they raise to lower the cost of gasoline? There is no free lunch (or free for long).

greg4444 - 1-11-2017 at 07:08 PM

Not the extra cost of Diesel that's turning me off, just the unrest of the current situation. I son't want to be the foreigner that makes it worse.

BajaBlanca - 1-11-2017 at 08:18 PM

Probably a good call ... the situation changes from moment to moment.
