Partial trip report; Mexicali to Coco's to Guerrero Negro

kevin_in_idaho - 2-3-2017 at 04:38 PM

We crossed at Mexicali East.  No issues.  The FMM stamp is easy and the man there would take cash (we paid online).

No protests, no issues.  Lots of gas and diesel everywhere.  Fueled up in Mexicali (extra cans) and San Felipe; no issues with the 2015 RAM 1500 Ecodiesel.

Went down to Percebu and then to Beluga over to Coco's and now in Guerrero Negro to have a hot shower, resupply, etc.  Jesus Maria has diesel (ULSD).

We'll head towards Bahia Concepción and may stop and camp along the way.

Awesome weather but we heard that a week or so ago, it wasn't very nice.  65 (I think) in GN and it was 75 on the Gulf.

Limited to no internet, wifi, etc. to this point.  Cell (Verizon) hasn't worked and I haven't tried enabling it in GN yet.

Hi Kevin

Have you been to Scammons yet ?

Was it busy ?

I find the birding areas interesting out beyond town toward the old salt loading dock and the "light house "...just ask in town.

Enjoy !

So how was the dirt road section after the rains?

David K - 2-3-2017 at 10:25 PM

It was easy, just one big puddle in the construction zone on Monday.

Yup, it was cold last week. And windy! We took the same route - and did the dirt road in the rain.

Did you happen to see a red kayak by the road?

Somewhere between Gonzaga and Scammon's it disappeared.

Maybe it worked loose on the dirt road and blew off when we gained speed on Hwy 1. Or maybe it "floated" off the top of the camper when we were out for a hike. Hard to say. We were camped at Scammon's and returned from a hike down the beach to find it missing with the tie down straps just sitting on the roof.

We can't say for sure that it didn't blow off earlier, it was just that the straps were on the roof still with nothing to hold them in place and we can't imagine they would have stayed there very long. No sign of anyone nearby.

Not a valuable kayak, just annoying. Good thing it was too windy and cold all week to miss it.

The kayaks in Baja, stay in Baja.

Doing that on the way back north but based on what we see at GN, the hotels are empty.

All roads have been great (by Baja standards). Lots of potholes on Hwy 1. Road to/from Coco's was fair (cars on it) but no mud, etc.
