What's that whale in the Bahia Concepcion?

elfbrewery - 3-14-2017 at 03:59 PM

Saw a whale this morning in the Bahia Concepcion. It was dark all over with a flat head, a not so large dorsal fin and totally dark tail. There's debate over whether it was white underneath. Don't know if it was a juvenile or just kinda small.
Any guesses?

If it was not large, my wild guess is a species of pilot whale, a toothed whale. I have seen them in the bay driving fish against the shore. But they don't have flat heads, that that is more typical of baleen whales.

But with the limited info available, like I said, that is my wild guess!

Whale Shark?

'll stake it was definitely a humpy. Small dorsal, dark all over. They cruise through this time of year, have a video of one fin-slapping right off Rosa's house at La Perla one afternoon; high winds, norther-waves, nasty day, but this bad boy was flappin' fins in less than 20' of water. BTW, if you're not in the know, La Perla is 30 miles inside the Bahia.

Keep 'em coming.

Bryde's or Finback? Bryde's are a little smaller and both seem to have less tail action than a humpback.

I saw two together on Sunday last just off the south point of Playa Armenta. They were heading south towards the bottom of the bay! Surely hope the get turned around and find their way out to open ocean.

We wondered if there might be more than one.
Sorry about the Facebook link. Thought I'd give it a try since I didn't personally have the photos...
Yes, he/she/they were headed out of the bay and I haven't seen or heard of his/her/their return. But it is grand to see them in the bay when there is so little life compared with decades ago.
