Stupid question but I'm going to ask anyway

BajaBuckeye - 4-6-2017 at 08:16 AM

Is the ice we will be buying on our trip to Baja be safe to use in drinks? I warned it was a stupid Question! LOL! I'm a beer drinker so this won't affect me but the wife is a rum and coke drinker and I want to be clear on this question. Thanks in advance!

AKgringo - 4-6-2017 at 08:24 AM

I recommend doubling the rum to Coke ratio, just to be safe! With a slice of lime added, it almost becomes health food.

The bags of Ice usually say they are from purified water, so I suppose there is an issue of trust. I would worry more about the salad than the c-cktail you have with a meal, if you worry at all.

You'll be fine. If she gets sick blame it on poor hygiene!

She will be fine. Have a drink for me!

Bagged ice cubes in the markets are labeled as purified... We have vodka and rum mixed drinks on occasion and if we run out of crushed ice (added to the block ice, or chopped from the U.S. block ice) on the long trips, we use the local store bagged ice, no problem.

Now, ice from ice houses, used for homes without electricity, fish storage, etc., is not necessarily clean water. We bought some block ice from the ice house in Mulegé (on the west road to Ray's place), and it was so gross after a day of melting, we dumped it all out... too yucky even to just cool food and beer with (for my wife, anyway). Couldn't tell when it was frozen how bad it was.

Don't worry about the ice unless it's yellow.

Back in the day, the beer bottles were refilled don't know how
many times, used to do what we called a flug check, seeing
if anything was growing up from the bottom of the bottle.
Not ice, but the plastic spoons at taco stands I'm a bit wary
of, they probably have' t been changed since Pres. Salinas.
Took a couple newbies to San Felipe, had breakfast at a
popular spot the guy's wife holds up a fork of frijoles,
which had a non bean consistancy, was a Pacifico bottle cap

That's snow, not ice. In memory of Frank Zappa.

If you buy professionally sealed bags of crushed ice it's Law that it must be made with purified water. However if you buy block ice, non-bagged (for a cooler) from an ice plant it won't be, so get your c-cktail ice from any store, almost all have a small ice freezer now. I'd be more concerned in wiping off the top of the coke can when you open it than with ice.

Thanks for all the comments. I'm feeling better about it now!!!

If you are worried about getting sick a shot of Pepto every morning and you can damn near eat and drink anything within reason and not get sick, it was recommended by my doctor years ago and believe me it works.

I remember the beer bottle caps not always matching what was in the bottles. Didn't slow us down any.

I've never even thought about this topic. Sometimes I use Baja store-bought ice from the ice chest - it may have sand and rocks in it due to, uh, being in Baja. It may be days old. I consume it and move on.

No, I never get the Touristas.

had an old timer in baja once tell me ."if the ice has holes in it it's good to go". that was a long time ago and there are alot of different shapes these days

aguachico - 4-6-2017 at 05:30 PM

you can buy ice from ice houses. If you ask for cristalano or hielo purificado, they will crush or chip or sell a bar to you. Most shaved ice is blanco or unpurified tap water.

freediverbrian - 4-6-2017 at 06:11 PM

If you use ice from your cooler with chicken , cheese ,lunch meat , ect and blame the ice shame on you ?

BajaBlanca - 4-6-2017 at 07:51 PM

It is actually quite a good question. I have never heard of anyone getting sick from bagged ice but my mom got really sick from salad! Drown any salad with vinegar to be on the safe side.

never gave it a second thought but when in your neck of the woods we always load up on ice from the progresso cannery (along with smoked yellowtail and bonito jerky), bet that ice isn't c-cktail quality!

BajaBlanca - 4-8-2017 at 11:31 AM

nope....I wouldn't think the cooperative ice is c-cktail quality but we have plenty of ice in the smaller grocery stores (Luigui's) and of course at the big mini Costco.

Pappy Jon - 4-18-2017 at 03:29 PM

Not a silly question at all. I just avoid the subject with a 12V fridge that keeps my beer nice and cold.
