Headed to San Lucas Cove

We will be departing for San Lucas Cove this Saturday. We usually take Mex 1 down, but a friend is interested in taking Mex 5. Which would you suggest, and other than San Felipe, where would we gas up on Mex 5?

I am the first of thousands of responses. Last reliable gas is San Felipe, but there are maybe-open Pemex stations in Puertecitos and Gonzaga Bay.

In my humble opinion, Highway 5 is FAR superior to Highway 1 - more scenic and almost no traffic. And the dirt section makes it fun. Watch for killer vados south of San Felipe. South of Puertecitos, the highway is fast and smooth.

Hwy. 5.
San Felipe top off.
You can make Vizcaino easy. However, there are Pemex stations at Gonzaga, Villa Jesus Maria, and Guerrero Negro, between them.

Are you towing a boat? Get your axles and bearings done, check all weld joints if you're doing hwy 5. Go slow in the vados, and when you reach Chapala re-check all welds.

Well, we didn't like taking 5 - the vados are awful, the roadwork makes it hard going.
