Shaq got bank!!!

Ford and Cummins, who would a thunk?

A better option for ford diesels than the Powerstroke.

What a monster for those who have no spending limits.

We can only hope these do not visibly smoke on acceleration, like some of the weekend truck programs do and are an abomination to mother nature when they are burning rubber and emitting like a smokestack.

Thanks to all here.

Ford Cummins swap is common on pick ups. There are 3 company's that I know of to do swap. This was needed when Ford made the Junk 6.0 motor. Very cool truck.

DavidT - 5-7-2017 at 11:33 AM

At that price I am sure the rolling coal system is already installed.
No aftermarket modifications needed.

chuckie - 5-7-2017 at 01:38 PM

At one time Ford owned a good piece of Cummins, I think...

AKgringo - 5-7-2017 at 01:53 PM

If I had one of those big boys, I could still use my Kia like a dingy to get to and from the land yacht! I could probably rig up a hoist to take my little Sporty aboard to use for short excursions to tight places.

chuckie - 5-7-2017 at 02:41 PM

It would break most peoples budget at the car wash.....

That is because at the time they had a deal with Navistar International. Another great legendary engine.

chuckie - 5-7-2017 at 04:02 PM

I had a Ford Navistar..not so great..

DeMinimis - 5-9-2017 at 02:29 PM

Mid-2000s and Cumins 5.9 was not an uncommon feature of the F-650/750. In fact, but don't quote me on this, I think Cat C7s saw service with some as well. Can't recall when Cumins went away ('11-ish perhaps?). Shaq's truck looks ridiculous. Hell, my truck looks ridiculous.

Chuckie, I had a 7.3. Sounded like a coffee can full of nuts and bolts, but damn that thing ran...and ran...and ran. Then came the the sad years.

Ford's current diesel (with Gen II updates) is a damn fine engine, by the reports I've seen. I've considered it. Hell, I'm still considering one (F-450 pickup so I can have some damn power again, as opposed to my underwhelming, diesel chugging 5500 de-tuned Cumins combo).

chuckie - 5-9-2017 at 02:42 PM

Not knocking the 7.3 Lots of them around here doing work..Old Smokey is going on 400K and is not as high on power as he used to be (neither am I)...BUt still burns no oil, keeps on going...My Daughter has two Duramax's ..Not impressed....

DeMinimis - 5-9-2017 at 02:55 PM

See now, I loved my D-max. I did a lot of work to it, but it had more power than I could use and got good mileage. In fact, I rather miss it. If you mod those things so they aren't breathing their own farts, they be good. Really, there isn't a bad diesel out there now in the pickups, but I've seen a few reports/pics of a certain 6.7 6cyl cracking pistons in that rear cylinder (tuned). Mine is so de-tuned that that will never happen (tunes available, but nothing for the Aisin, so, basically, no tunes available for me).

aguachico - 5-9-2017 at 04:13 PM

emission control systems in diesels for the last ten years have made it almost impossible for a consumer to afford a 8 cylinder diesel truck.

New diesels are not built to last 400k miles. They are built to last the warranty.

Shaq is running for sheriff and the truck will give him the 'walking tall' look he needs to win.

Charlie Nichols - 5-10-2017 at 09:43 AM

Ford never "owned" Cummins....they had a 10% share and a seat on the Board of Directors for less than 10 years (1990-1997). That was the extent of their involvement.

Doug/Vamonos - 5-11-2017 at 06:01 AM

Love my 6.0 and 5R110. Minor mods are all it needed. And the cost of those mods pales in comparison to $70,000 for a new truck! EVERY modern diesel has its issues. Including Cummins and GM/Isuzu. Pile on haters!

chuckie - 5-11-2017 at 06:17 AM

I think they are all good, some better than others, depending on use...

Hey Doug;

I dropped a lifter on my '04 6.0 Liter and bought another engine. '06 6.0L with 40K. SHe's still pulling and running good. About to upgrade the tranny pan to a '08 model. 10years. ~~200k miles @ $50k total no complaints with my ford.

MMc - 5-11-2017 at 08:26 PM

In the 80's I drove a f550 with a Cat 3208 that had a blower, it hauled freight. That was a really fun job.

motoged - 5-11-2017 at 11:25 PM

Saw one of these in town today...and recognized it, not from this thread....but from somewhere on the internet a few days ago....

Who would drive a truck with that many miles?

My new Duramax would run circles around that old clunker.

bajabuddha - 5-12-2017 at 12:08 AM

Jeez, chuckie.... I think JZ has some wood for ya.... :smug:

chuckie - 5-12-2017 at 12:34 AM

JZ owns a Duramax?:lol::lol::lol: If he does his momma had to buy it for him....

To me, the greatest thing about the internet is how information about faulty engine systems are shared and fixes are publicized. I have probably saved between 10-20k in repairs.

If you were able to wait on buying even the best diesels (IMO, the 7.3 Navistar and the 5.9 Cummins), you would be aware of their shortcomings and can take pre-emptive measures to fix those systems before they fail.

I have a 2000 Ford with the 7.3. By combing through the diesel forums that popped up in the early 2000s, some things were evident. The trannys failed in heavy, hot use. Other issues with this truck was the cam position sensor and the throttle positioner at the foot pedal.

The sleeved pistons requires a special coolant additive that would eventually cause failure of the water pump seal, the thermostat and the thermostat housing. I was fortunate to be a member of a diesel forum where a guy who bought a huge fleet of 7.3s became the person who revealed the cooling cavitation issues to Ford and led to the need for the additive. He also passed on information when coolants were developed that no longer needed the additive.

The tranny issues with the 4r100 tranny turned out to be the torque converter, not the tranny itself. The converters from about 99-03 were single disc converters. Under heavy loads, there would be much slipping of the disc, which created heat, which was transferred to the tranny and caused it to fail. Many of us who bought used 99-03s simply replaced the torque converter with the one from 04-06; a triple disc model. It wasnt that expensive, if you knew where to buy online. The internet to the rescue again. Mine never failed even though I towed an 8000 lb boat and a camper on the back to Baja a few times. Also towed a 36 foot TT around the Desert SW in the summer, at elevation. No trannny issues, but I am only at 236k now. Of course, running synthetic tranny fluid is probably the single best thing anyone can do for a tranny. Conventional fluid breaks down at a much lower temp. That's what takes out trannies; that and simply dirty fluid.

I do still use a programmer that brings the stock 235hp up to 275, supposedly. It is certainly faster and stronger than on the stock setting.

The internet also revealed the infamous lift pump issues with the 5.9 Cummins. Many replaced those before they failed.

It's easy for a Toyota truck owner to point out how little fails on their trucks. But Toyotas are never asked to do even half of what we ask our diesels to do. There will be occasional issues when towing weights that are 3-5 times the unladen weight of a Tacoma by itself.

chuckie - 5-12-2017 at 09:09 AM

Good points, all...It really pays to research and understand the weaknesses of the engine you pick AND to add things that help you understand how your engine is feeling....Transmission temp guage example. Trucks that are not asked to do truck work shouldn't be held up as examples ....
