Afternoon all, we are planning trip in couple of weeks out to Malarrimo Beach hopefully using the route from San Jose de Castro. Does anyone have any
recent info on the condition of the track and are there any distinguishing features that mark the initial right turn as there seems to be be a few
options looking at google earth. lastly, is it possible to drive up the beach to Estero Mike McMahon from where the track / arroyo ends? Thanks.

Have not been for a few years--there was a sign then--be careful going right from the mouth of the arroyo--much quicksand--i know of 4 vehicles stuck
below high tide in years past all4x4--

a guest of ours is heading there in a few days and is sure to have some good intel on getting in there...he is stopping off at our place so I will ask
him the best way to access it.

Reading many guides and articles on Malarrimo Beach would say that you need to hug the dunes if you go right (east) to Estero McMahan. Where arroyos
meet the beach are the dangers as dry surface sand hides wet goo just below.
To find the road by San José de Castro, use Google Earth and note the distance. It makes a big U curve to the west on the way north.

Willard, is the waterline road used as much or kept passable as the canyon road?

We went there in Jan. of 2015. San Jose de Castro buildings are no longer there just rubble and trash. The turn off is at 27-33.310x114-27.800. There
were a couple of rough spots but nothing a stock 4x4 couldn't handle. The area near the ocean was totally wiped out and changed from years past. Still
a fun place to go. When we were there you could not drive out onto the beach without a dune buggy or serious 4x4, sand was soft and deep.

TMW, thanks for the coordinates. I read your trip report a while back when we first started talking about the trip and the part about the end of the
arroyo concerned me. Earlier that year we had spoken to a couple of Vigilencias from Eugenia (Ivan an other gentleman and Oscar a younger guy) who
also manned the lookout at Malarrimo, they said it was ok to drive up to McMahon's. I guess we will find out in a couple of weeks... time to drop
some cash on Max Tracks.

Looking on Google Earth the road is faint but when driving it the way is pretty easy to follow. The only time we did a little backtracking was the
mesa area where the ditches were and after we dropped down into the arroyo that takes you out to the ocean. It is probably better now that more
traffic has been on it. We did it after the 2014 big hurricane messed everything up.
