Yet another version of the origin

In 1957, and again in 1959, my dad took the family on a three month vacation down to Manzanillo and back. I don't remember which trip it was, but somewhere in northern Mexico we spent the night at a hotel where the proprietor spoke pretty good English, and took an interest in us.

He had a picture of Pancho Villa on his wall, a hero to him! He told us that Gringo came from the army green uniforms that General Pershing's troops wore. It was 'Green go, green go!' that the Mexicans were calling out.

I know now that the term Gringo pre-dated the war, but that is what I grew up believing!
