TMW - 6-22-2017 at 11:54 AM

Well done David, thanks.

David K - 6-22-2017 at 03:41 PM

It was from my last trip and Shari's hospitality again prompted me to say something about the place.
Two of the photos were not mine... The ones of the Inn (says 'Hotel' on the building) and of the bufadora sprays were mine.

shari - 6-22-2017 at 04:47 PM

gracias David...we appreciate the help promoting our area....but I should have given you a better blowhole photo....it was just a spurt in yours!

StuckSucks - 6-22-2017 at 04:57 PM

Fun read. Bahía Asunción has been on my bucket list for a while now - some day I will visit.

norte - 6-22-2017 at 05:48 PM

I am sure Shari's place is great. But haven't I read where there are other hotels and fishing guides available in Asuncion? If so, Isn't this report a little incomplete? Just saying. No negative intent towards Shari (I don't know her).

So you didn't read my article or you missed them mentioned? The other two both looked sad and deserted. Not my fault if only Juan & Shari's has life. The article was primarily about La Bufadora Inn, no intent to be unbiased. I want my readers to have the same great experiences as I always do, staying there.

Too bad you have never expanded your horizons to meet other people in BA or try other businesses. It could be enlightening and then maybe you could do a far more balanced report about the town you really don't know.

But, great advertisement for Shari and as you say, totally biased.

KaceyJ - 6-22-2017 at 06:58 PM

Reads like an ad

WUWThat?????

much more going on on the peninsula on the peninsula

David K - 6-22-2017 at 07:54 PM

Try reading my dozens of other articles. This one was about Shari's, and Bahía Asunción, in that order. No one person has done more for that town than Shari. She and Juan deserve all the good that can come their way. Now, you all are welcome to write about other places in Baja. Baja Bound has asked for additional contributors. Go for it!

DianaT - 6-22-2017 at 09:43 PM

David, it is just sad that you know so little about that town and write as if you do know. Sad that you have never expanded your narrow propaganda.

Sorry to of upset you. The title was Asuncion:Diamond in the rough. That is what got my attention. Maybe the title is misleading then.

MICK - 6-23-2017 at 06:40 AM

I have to go with David on this. Why must people always bash him , it seams, to matter what he does.
He wrote an article about asuncion and shari's place. It was not titled all the hotels is asuncion, or everything you need to know about asuncion.
I thought it was a well written article about a place I have been often.
Lighten up a little it must be hard being perfect.
Looking forward to your articles. Please post them here so we can critique them for you.
Now , Let the bashing of Mick begin

shari - 6-23-2017 at 07:00 AM

We strive for good service here and others have written nice articles about our place in other magazines and websites and we are thankful for that. It is a challenge running a business in a small village so far off the beaten track. There is very little drive by guests so we rely on word of mouth, reviews and articles to let people know we are here and welcome visitors to our beautiful pueblo. The townfolk really appreciate the tourists who do come as the fishing industry is suffering so the extra tourist pesos help.

Here is a small update for those of you who need it.

A few days ago I got a call from the fisheries inspector who wanted to update our contact information and he said that Juan is the only fishing guide with the proper permits here (perhaps some of you who dont live here arent up on the current info)

....there are 2 other hotels in the village Hotel Verduzco and he newer hotel on the beach which an out of town person just bought and changed the name to Hotel Playa I think...there is a phone # on the window to call for service. I dont believe the B&B is operating as we got a call from people who had reservations but nobody was there and when they did find someone the rooms were not ready. I havent seen any movement there for a long time.

TMW - 6-23-2017 at 07:05 AM

I'm with you Mick. I don't think Norte and DianaT read the full article just what they wanted to so they could bash David.

bajaguy - 6-23-2017 at 07:13 AM

Maybe you could enlighten us or write an article for one of the many Baja publications....

Geeze...the minnions have come out in defense. I only asked why no mention of nothing else in Asuncion. Shari answered the question. Good for her. Now the rest of you can go on sucking up to King dk

David K - 6-23-2017 at 08:21 AM

The article was not a detailed history, as many are my Baja Bound articles, or my 2016 book ('Baja California Land of Missions') is, using documented sources. The article was my personal experience, last month, and is the FOURTH time I have stayed at one of Shari's rooms and visited (not lived in) the town.

Those of you who lived there: Where are your books, or articles, about Asunción???

Thank you, MICK, Tom, Jim, and Terry for your interest and support.

KaceyJ and norte, please read (not just the title) my other articles on the rest of the peninsula's history and locations I have written about at Baja Bound, so far: https://www.bajabound.com/bajaadventures/bajatravel/

Thank you, Baja Nomads, for your interest and I encourage you all to recommend and help bring business to those Baja establishments that are honest, provide a needed or useful service, and go the extra 'kilometer' to see to the needs or comfort of their customers. That they are also Nomads here should naturally get Nomad support. Shari's is just one... Baja Cactus in El Rosario is another. Los Olivos and Posada Don Diego also are owned by Nomads. Maybe a list of Baja Nomad member-owned businesses is an idea?

PS: I have emailed Baja Geoff that the link at the end of the article needs a fix. It should be: http://bahiaasuncion.com

LancairDriver - 6-23-2017 at 08:37 AM

Very well written article. Maybe didn't cover every hole in the wall in town but more than enough information to bring the curious Baja traveler in for a look.

That is exactly how I want my travel articles and (future) Baja road guide to do... inspire those with a quest for fun and adventure to take the fork in the road!

BajaBlanca - 6-23-2017 at 08:48 AM

I personally, enjoyed the article.

To be fair, David could only write more and be honest, had he stayed at the other accomodations - so I think he did well by simply mentioning them.

Nice... again, read the article... unless it was edited out, I did mention the others. Try to do something for Baja yourself instead of just the name calling because I corrected your error about the article.

EDIT:
Nope, it was not edited out, so maybe you need glasses? The other Asunción businesses here copied off THE ARTICLE...

Local eating establishments include: Loncheria Mari features fresh local seafood; Keykos Restaurant for meat dishes and Baja’s best piña colada; Tacos Don Ramon for great shrimp tacos on the weekends; Blady’s Palapa on the beach for seafood c-cktails and tostada; and La Casa de las Hamburguesas for Saul’s barbecued burgers.

In addition to La Bufadora Inn, there are also two motels, right in town. The Hotel Verduzco is on the main street. Hotel La Playa, is on the beach, next to Campo Sirena (campground), near town entrance.

I already wear glasses. Thank You. Don't worry your responses have cemented my opinion of your article, you, and any future articles.

fishbuck - 6-24-2017 at 01:53 AM

Thank you for posting your article. I have got to figure out how to get back to Bahia Asuncion.
I will most definately stay with Juan and Sheri if they have a room for me.
I love that little town even though I've only been a few times and 10 years ago.
But I always like to go to the other places in town and look around and explore. That's part of the fun. I find my own spots.
But if you go to BA you would be foolish to not visit the Blowhole.
You will want to live there.
I wish I could afford Udos house. Or the 1 next to it. Both so cool.
I think best fishing is sept-dec so I better start planning...

I laughed when I read this Fishbuck as that is EXACTLY what happened to me the first time I visited Asuncion...our first stop was the blowhole and I clearly remember getting out of the truck....GOBSMACKED at the magnitude of beauty before my eyes1!! I felt rooted to that spot and my mind raced trying to figure out how I could live there....and a couple years later my wish came true!!! That is the abbreviated story...the long version is pretty funny how Juan & I courted...best told over a margarita on the patio!

Just to let ya know, there is a new house on the market....a little fixer upper but totally liveable now half a block from those two houses mentioned and the price dropped to $12,000!

BigBearRider - 6-24-2017 at 08:05 AM

Nice article, DK. Thanks for posting.

Paco Facullo - 6-24-2017 at 08:09 AM

Personally I really liked the article. And

can't wait to get down there to visit and fish or fish and visit with beer all mixed up in it.
Thanks David for a fine article

chuckie - 6-24-2017 at 08:12 AM

Ascuncion is a treasure, and Shari is a jewel! No better place to stay for a while than with Shari and Juan...If I were to go back to Baja to stay, it would be in Ascuncion. I had a place in Mulege for 34 years...But Mulege has moved on....VIVA ASCUNCION.....

David K - 6-24-2017 at 08:54 AM

Muchas Gracias! :bounce::bounce::bounce:

Let's go.

pauldavidmena - 6-25-2017 at 03:54 PM

As someone who has never been to either La Bufadora or Bahia Asuncion, the article was very useful to me. It tells me that should my travels bring me to BA, I would be doing myself a favor by visiting Shari and Juan. I don't see this as a subversive or nefarious act, but rather a helpful suggestion. Isn't that what this forum is supposed to be about?

BajaDanD - 6-25-2017 at 07:04 PM

I have been to Asuncion many many times
The town is full of really nice people but as far as fishing and places to stay Shari and Juan provid the best by far
Diana T has had a beef with Shari as long as i can remember
Just like some people have had one with David K

We will be there again in October

What I think is sad is how many people here grumble and complain about everything, trying to tear everything down instead of build something up.

If you want to write your own trip report, please do so! In the mean time, if you can't say something nice, say nothing at all.

fishbuck - 8-5-2017 at 09:11 PM

"Peace, love, and fish tacos" a wise man once told me...

David K - 8-5-2017 at 09:13 PM

That speaks volumes Gscott... and welcome to Nomad. It is this anti-free speak and trash any post that helps Mexican tourism here stuff that keeps many from bothering to post on Nomad anymore or at all.
Please post your trip reports here and don't allow people like her keep you from sharing.
Travel writers usually don't live at or spend gobs of time at places they write about, do they? How can they be travel article writers if they don't travel?
I am traveling all of 2 weeks this month and will write about it when I get home.
Posting from La Paz tonight.

acadist - 8-6-2017 at 05:28 AM

Great article. Shari and Juan are great hosts love sharing this piece of Baja that is still small enough to be considered an off the beaten path destination.

And by the way....... yes I am biased! I am writing this while waking up in the whale room at the inn, trying to decide if I should throw a croc out for a daybreak halibut or take a walk or just sit and watch La Bufadora!

shari - 8-6-2017 at 07:05 AM

Halibut would be lovely for breakfast Dave...or a crab omelette...get those kids on those crabs on the rocks!

gueribo - 8-6-2017 at 09:50 AM

Shari's is well worth the drive out. Great hosts and beautiful rooms. Historic and natural discoveries all around.

Mexitron - 8-6-2017 at 09:52 AM

Nice article David! Asuncion is a cool place, Shari and Juan are great. Lots of nice camping outside of town too, it gets out in the wide open fairly fast.

snooking - 11-6-2017 at 10:35 AM

Thanks for the article David I have been wondering about the logistics of visiting BA n the info u provided makes me think traveling on from San Quintin would definitely be worth a few days to explore keep up the good work n if I get there I'll be in touch n thank u again.

David K - 11-6-2017 at 05:34 PM

Glad you like it! Most of my Baja Bound articles are consisting of off-road driving or historical in nature, so this one was a little different.
Here are the others, ENJOY!: https://www.bajabound.com/bajaadventures/bajatravel/

BA was my original retirement municipality, and bought the house there for that reason...until I got deathly sick and needed to live closer to the US border.

Udo.... hope you are doing better. It's good to see you posting. Miss the old days traveling south of Ensenada all the way down Baja. Hope all is well !!
