Dirt bikes "Gonzaga"

Is there any paper work that's needed to get dirt bikes to and from the border. We are Heading to Gonzaga in a few weeks.

Are they going to be in your truck or trailer?

People take their 'toys' to Baja all the time. Just be able to prove they are registered to you when Mexican authorities ask, at the border.

A notarized permission slip may be wise if someone else is bringing them to you/ for you IF you get separated from that person and the bike.

Stay tuned for more replies from Nomads who actually do this more often than I. (Nobody questioned me when I took my son's dirt motor bike in my truck about it).

For Baja, just the registration(s).

If the mainland you need to get an import permit for your vehicle + bikes/quads.

You also need to make sure you have no gas can full unless it is race gas. They may or may not question you about it.

They have compared the vin on my bike to the vin on my registration at least a dozen times in the last few years. Doesn't matter if it is Tecate, Mexicali, or San Luis.

They don't check for many things at the border, but they almost always check if you have gas in your can and the vins.

Good point! Make sure your gas can is empty! Fill it once you get to San Felipe... 87 and 91 octane, ethanol-free gasoline!

Same for me at San Ysidro, every time.

Apparently different rules if you are riding across. I rode across at Tecate and got the redlight. They looked thru my backpack but didn't even look at the bike.

You need CURRENT registration ORIGINAL no copies. For some reason this is a big deal for the Mexican border folks and they will not hesitate to send you back, even for an original out of date registration. It doesn't make sense, but it doesn't need to, that's how it is.

Pemex premium is far better than California spec gas. No ethanol, no summer blend, etc. gas in northern Baja comes from US refineries.

I've ridden across the border several times a year for more than 40 years and never been asked for motorcycle registration. But each time when carrying a bike on the trailer or in the back of a pickup papers have asked for.
