New crop of baby sea lions at Isla Asuncion

Yesterday we took Juan's daughter, son in law and grand kids visiting from La Paz out to see the sea lions at Isla Asuncion. There was still a big swell left over from the storm and it was our grandsons first time ever in a boat so his eyes sure were wide and closed tightly shut on the big waves!









The sea lions were noisier than usual due to the presence of hundreds of young sea lion pups only a few weeks old. They couldn't swim yet but were playing in the waves on the beaches. Cool how the cormorants just mix right in with the sea lions. The dads were being very protective of he new pups.







These machos had a wee altercation...



Kinda cool that there were both spotted seals and sea lions sharing the same beach.



Heading home we were going into the waves which scared Saul...he closed his eyes and wa yelling Save Me...poor kid!



ON the way back we took a picture of our place La Bufadora Inn from the water for a different prospective.

I was served sea lion meat in oolican grease at an indigenous feast...now there is a combo for ya...it tasted more like a fishy pork...nice dark meat..it was actually pretty tasty!

The Japanese asked the cooperativa for a permit to do a cull at the island as the sea lion population is out of control as there are not many predators now that the shark population was decimated by shark fin sellers....but the Biosphere Reserve didnt allow the cull.

It is kind of hard to root for the sharks, but without them thinning the pinniped population, the fish stocks will be depleted until starvation takes over as the population control.

Obviously, other factors are involved, but sharks are a necessary part of the system.

I would think with the fat content, seal meat could be great on the grill. Their seafood diet could make the meat texture quite interesting.

Is the COOP a political body? I would think the Japanese would have to go thru DF be get approval to cull since it is a Biosfera.

I personally would like to try seal meat, just for change of pace and a wholesome omnivorous diet like we're intended for. Sorta like venison, elk, fowl, rabbit..... cute lil' scudders, was raised eating rabbit from a local raiser supplementing her income (just like the movie). Who knows; maybe the co-op could do something with that if the population needs culling as mentioned. It's humane, it's substantiating, and it's FOOD. And goathead, I'm truly amazed you survive Thanksgiving every year.

Those are great photos! Teach Saul to swim so he doesn't panic like that -pobrezito!!!! and for sure if he doesn't swim, get the kid a life jacket and explain how it is used so he doesn't have to be so afraid. All in hindsight, I know......

I too hate big waves and I do know how to swim but once got stuck behind big waves when I went swimming with my mom in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I was probably 20 or so and I screamed GOD SAVE ME at the top of my lungs. Over and over til we finally got back to shore. Not one of my prettier moments....which is why I am empathizing so with Saul LOL

Good for the biosphere not to allow the Japanese in. How would one ever control what they were taking?...nah....bad idea.
