BajaNomad

Nomad campground and motel recommendations for San Juanico (& Ligüí south) to Cabo, please.

David K - 7-22-2017 at 08:34 AM

With the distance so great, I don't get into Baja Sur as much as I would like.

What are places you like to use for camping and reasonably priced overnight rooms at the following places or others?:
San Juanico (Scorpion Bay), Lopez Mateos, Puerto San Carlos, and south to the tip.

More interested in small town location than cities, but if you can suggest a good place in Cabo, La Paz, etc. that would be appreciated.
Thank you! I will visit as many as I can on my next trip.

Thank you!

This will be a beneficial thread for me too as I'm doing this same course in a few.

Hotel Mar de Cortex in Cabo gets good reviews and relatively cheap.

BajaBlanca - 7-22-2017 at 08:48 AM

We really liked this hotel when we went years ago - we had Rex with us at the time.

The spelling lady is suggesting you fix spelling of SAN JUANICO on your thread title!

If surfing, you may want to visit goofy footer Punta Conejo.

I'll be checking Conejo in about a week.

I have stayed in this hotel 3 times. Very nice rooms, pool, restaurant. Across the street from Cabo Wabo. Two blocks to the marina, and great shopping nearby.

There's an RV park in the middle of Ciudad Constitucion on the east side of the highway. We spent one night there. Nothing special but a safe, convenient place to spend the night if you're in an RV.

honda tom - 7-22-2017 at 09:28 AM

David, in san juanico check out Cowabunga. has a facebook site,
really cool guy. when i was there in april he was full but sent us to a similar place a block away that was great also. Cant remember the name but either one is nice, and fair priced.

Howard - 7-22-2017 at 09:37 AM

I like Martin Verdugos Las Barriles for my RV as well as the hotel. Most everything you need is within walking. Nice and clean and family run. A little noisy in the morning when the boats go out but other than that, no complaints.

David K - 7-22-2017 at 09:59 AM

This is awesome, keep it coming, amigos!

honda tom - 7-22-2017 at 10:32 AM

just got back from Puerto san carlos. spent a half day there, cool beaches all around. don't worry a bit about the dirt road that connects the paved roads to lopez mateo and san carlos, through romaditas, smooth and fast. i took it north (from the san carlos rd. to romaditas) then NE to insurgents. San Carlos had quite a few small motels.

Campestre Maranatha

AKgringo - 7-22-2017 at 10:44 AM

Dave, the Maranatha campground west of La Paz is a great resource for Baja Sur travelers. Here is a link to a reply I posted to a thread last year;

Hi David,

When in Puerto San Carlos:

We visited Puerto San Carlos just before "Semana Santa", we stayed at "Brennan Hotel": clean, very basic, not good tv, secured parking, no restaurant but they do have a fishing guide on hand that may be helpful. We had dinner at "Restaurante Lore" right on the corner up a couple of steps: not good; but next door to it there's a smaller not as "fancy" but was told by locals it's way better homemade food: "La Pasadita" when we got there it was closed (around 9pm). We also had great seafood at Mariscos "El Tiburon" behind the technical school.

During our visit it was windy everyday so we didn't go out in the bay but as I've learned there's great fishing and sightseeing along the bay and in the mangroves, also the sand dunes on Isla Magdalena are something worthwhile visiting.

I had both motors on my boat checked by a local mechanic, it was a small shop with sand floor but very knowledgeable guys working there.

On your way thru Ciudad Constitucion look for "Antojeria La Esquina" it's on a corner on the east side of the street: it's a must hole in the wall place to have breakfast; we stayed at Hotel "Posada del Ryal" about $650 pesos (?) secured parking, coffee in the office, regular tv, really clean.

Enjoy your visit.

DK, please disclose if this info will be published in a book of yours or others. Certain places should be left sacred from the masses. Let most find it on their own especially in out of the way places. I'm just old fashioned that way. Few camp grounds or RV Parks in BCS because of high property values. Appreciate your respect. U2U if You want info. Tio

David K - 7-22-2017 at 02:03 PM

As I mentioned, campgrounds and motels Nomads recommend, not secret beaches of yours. I want to see them for inclusion in the Baja Bound guide.

BooJumMan - 7-22-2017 at 02:49 PM

Olas de Cerritos in Cerritos was really nice and I think was about $50 a night last year. Secure parking as well.

chippy - 7-22-2017 at 04:19 PM

Hotel 7 puntas in San Juanico. 4 Misiones in Ciudad Constitucion.Campsite at Conejo
San Carlos is a buthole. I´ve been there many times by sea and land. Don´t waste your time. The rest of the tip has many many options. Enjoy!

Zingeroo! Buddah. Baja Bound Guide---the more we promote Baja the faster it disappears. Keep Baja Sur out of it. I know, I'm a Cabron. Just living Despacito, ja! Tio

David K - 7-23-2017 at 08:04 AM

Thanks for the great replies. Keep them coming. This information is for me, as well...

I will be tent camping most nights (I have a tight budget) but I will use a motel every few nights or more, depending on how humid or buggy it is.

Any more great Baja Sur places that you want to help the owners of to get more business? Let's keep good places in business, as tourism in Mexico is still hurting with the U.S. media pounding the death counts in Baja Sur into our heads. There is plenty of Baja for us all to enjoy the few days a year we might stay at motels or campgrounds.

Feel free to u2u or email me if you want to be anonymous. email: info AT vivabaja.com change AT to @ and remove spaces.

Thank you. Not a mis-spelling as much as a typo. You noticed in the body of the post, I spelled it correctly. I edited the title to fix the typo.

StuckSucks - 7-23-2017 at 09:06 AM

I'm pretty sure you're not looking for this kind of housing, but I have stayed many many times at the newish Hyatt Place La Paz. The people who work there have always been friendly and helpful -- even the wifi internet is fast. If you're looking for clean, new, corporate - this is the place.

David K - 7-23-2017 at 09:36 AM

Thanks, Jim! For the guide, I am not detailing services in cities, as you can find everything in the bigger towns. I want to help people locate things they may need in the boonies or smaller towns. I do appreciate hearing recommendations in cities, however. La Paz is a place I would like to know of a good RV park. One has been provided and it sounds like the place I was on my honeymoon camping trip in 1985... That was the Los Aripes ... (something) campground. Maybe the place AKgringo mentioned today?

mcnut - 7-23-2017 at 09:36 AM

I'll suggest several which I have not visited but believe good options where few exist:

Constitucion Area

Balneario RV, SW edge of town, 1 km off MX-1.
Palapa 206, W side of MX-1 4.8 km south of MX-1 & MX-22.

La Paz

Agua Marina, just off MX-1 northern end of waterfront.

I can vouch for this! Super cool place. Quiet and comfortable with old school, Baja rancho set up. Outside of the recent Todos "hustle" and rates. Hope to get back there soon.

David K - 7-24-2017 at 08:48 AM

Nice, thanks. Where in Todos are they? I looked at each page of the web link but did not see a map or directions, just 'Las Brisas'.

BFS - 7-24-2017 at 09:56 AM

not sure if this will work but here goes:

Thank you very much. I also got a u2u from another Nomad with the same link. It is good for others to see, for business!

David K - 7-29-2017 at 02:26 PM

Any more motel or campground recommendations for south of Loreto to Cabo for me as well as other Baja amigos and Nomads?

Thank you!

David K - 7-30-2017 at 06:36 PM

I will be driving in no hurry as I want to see anything that may be of interest. Only very brief description of any listings would be in the guide. The idea is to just let travelers know what they might find and where they might get fuel, rooms, camping spots, food, and take photos. I could very well miss something and things can change overnight... The beauty of an online guide is instant editing with new data. I look forward to all of your input when you see changes from what is or isn't in the guide.

This TRIP (#6) may (or may not) accomplish travel to these sites:

Research Day 1:
San Ignacio to El Datil, San Juanico, Las Barrancas, La Purisima.
Day 2:
To San Miguel Comondu, Santo Domingo, Lopez Mateos.
Day 3:
To Puerto San Carlos, Constitucion, Mission San Luis Gonzaga, La Pasion.
Day 4: To Mission Dolores overview, Los Burros, San Evaristo, La Paz.
The next few days may be done as day trips out from La Paz.
Day 5: Cape Region: Santiago side.
Day 6: Cabo Pulmo & Los Cabos
Day 7: Cape Region: Todos Santos side
Day 8: To La Aguja-Punta Conejo-Puerto Chale-Puerto Cancun
Day 9: To Bahia Agua Verde
Day 10: To Ligüí-Loreto
Day 11: North, Mulegé, maybe to Mission Guadalupe? If more days are needed in Sur, then it is open. Weather and my old bones driving so much may need a break or two, as well.

IF anyone has something they wish to share to help a local Baja business (motel, campground, restaurant, tourist service) in these places, I appreciate hearing about them so I can try it or mention it.

So much Baja, so little time!

AKgringo - 7-30-2017 at 09:57 PM

When in La Paz, are you going to get a chance to check out the drive out through Pichilinque to Playa Tecolote? There are several beaches along that stretch.

Then there is La Ventana with two routes south to the East cape area, one dirt, and one paved.

Yes, Elizabeth and I were there in La Paz, in 2012, with Baja Tripper (Steve) on our summer trip. I will get in all the cool places I can to record for the map and guide.

What I can't get in this year can be added in later... this guide will be a living resource all of us can contribute towards. Thank you!
