STORM REPORTS from 14E..maybe Lidia...weather & road updates

Ensenada...pea soup fog. 8:00 a.m.

Russ - 8-30-2017 at 08:05 AM

Off to the market now. Clear skies 91º ~ 76%

Russ - 8-30-2017 at 08:11 AM

The potential tropical cyclone has not become any better organized
overnight, though available data indicate that the pressures
continue to fall and that the winds have increased to 30 kt. It
appears that there are two centers in the broad circulation, and the
NHC position uses a mean center. Only slow strengthening is
forecast today due to the disorganized surface circulation, but a
more significant intensification could start tomorrow. If the
circulation consolidates, the upper-level winds and water
temperatures are very conducive to strengthening. The NHC forecast
is similar to the previous one, just a bit above the model
consensus. Because the system is forecast to be approaching
hurricane strength as it nears Baja California Sur, the hurricane
watch is maintained. Later in the forecast period, the cyclone
should weaken while it traverses either land or the cooler waters
west of the Baja peninsula.

As before, with the lack of a definite center the initial motion is
quite uncertain, with the current estimate at 335/8 kt. For the
next couple of days, the system/tropical cyclone is expected to move
slowly north-northwestward on the eastern end of a broad mid-level
cyclonic gyre. In 3-5 days the motion should bend toward the
northwest and west-northwest due to a mid-level ridge to the north.
Model guidance has shifted a bit to the east today, and the official
forecast is adjusted in that direction. A tropical storm watch has
been issued for the west coast of Mexico due to the changes in the
forecast. Since the disturbance still lacks a well-defined center
and there is considerable spread in the model guidance, this
official track forecast has greater-than-usual uncertainty.

It is also important to note that very heavy rain causing
life-threatening flash floods and mudslides is possible over
portions of western Mexico and Baja California Sur. Regardless of
exactly how strong the cyclone becomes, this is expected to be a
significant hazard.

tiotomasbcs - 8-30-2017 at 08:29 AM

Good advise and fun to read. A few clouds this morning are helping keep us cool but no real sign of Lidia, yet. Prolly see her rolling in tomorrow. Beautiful beach morning with a pumping 5ft South swell. KatieJ used to report from TS and Pescadero in summers past but haven't seen any recent posts. You down here KatieJ?? Talk Baja is also showing good storm updates. I will keep posting. As long as we have power! Cuidate! Amigos. Tomas

Mexitron - 8-30-2017 at 10:05 AM

Yeah Shari, this older format is better for tracking threads and such than Facebook. Advantages to both, maybe a hybrid software?

Agree, Facebook is not a great way to archive and see a timeline of posts.
I tried very hard to figure a way to make or have it show, in a fashion that allowed for anyone to reference or look up, older reports.
I only managed to get Ron angry at my questioning options to make Talk Baja more usable as a reference instead of just showing the current conversations. My motives were misunderstood, I was not angry or irritated, but without checking off every possible action, I wasn't satisfied to give up. Oh well, I tried!

Bajaboy - 8-30-2017 at 10:14 AM

This storm is all over the board. Now Windy has it moving into Los Moochis area. We'll see how it unfolds.

Ron does a pretty good job of keeping weather reports front and center. There is enough room during storms for weather on both sites. and others Like "hurricane info - los cabos bcs"....another good information facebook page.

Lets have some on-site reports here....if it does not disrupt things too much.

National Hurricane Center:

"Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph (55 kph) with higher gusts. The system is expected to strengthen to a tropical storm by tonight, and it could become a hurricane by late Thursday or early Friday.

NHC said "The disturbance continues to show signs of organization, and only a small increase in the definition of the circulation would lead to the formation of a tropical cyclone. The formation chance through 48 hours is high, near 100 percent."

Glad to see you are all on duty as I do rely on this network for my storm news. Very hot here in San Ignacio today (Wednesday) with a few scattered clouds and occasional restless gusts of wind. Thank you for the background info, and good luck!

rogbag - 8-30-2017 at 08:25 PM

9:15 PM Wed
It is a nice steady drizzle right now - not too windy nor too wet. I expect that to change to the wetter and windier before too long. I don't think it will be anything like Odile. That sounded like a freight train coming thru my palapa.
I bet if I just wait a bit it will all play out.
Los Barriles can use the rain.

Good morning. 88º & 86% hum. 20 mph NE wind with gust to 26 mph. I wasn't able to sleep this morning and have been looking around at Lidia info. I still find http://eebmike.com/ to be very good with an understandable write up and satellite views.

Hook - 8-31-2017 at 05:17 AM

Doubtful that it will be anything but a TS, given it's lack of cohesive circulation and predicted path.

But the rain will be significant. It's almost always about the rain.

Mula - 8-31-2017 at 05:29 AM

Nothing here in Lopez.

Calm before the storm I guess.

Lots of rain in Constitucion yesterday, tho'.

Russ - 8-31-2017 at 06:05 AM

Here is what my morning is looking like. Wind has decreased some and it's really pretty nice out. Mostly cloudy to the South now though.

David K - 8-31-2017 at 06:11 AM

Thank you, Russ, and good morning!
I hope it is a calm day for you, on the edge of paradise!

Lots of rain

Warf - 8-31-2017 at 06:50 AM

Rain started here in La Paz last night. Still a lot more to come and the infrastructure here is pretty old. Also, the city started digging up the Malecon last week. It's going to be a muddy mess there.

Meany - 8-31-2017 at 07:02 AM

Nice shots Russ. Looks like the swells are picking up. Be safe. Try to keep Pictures coming.

tiotomasbcs - 8-31-2017 at 07:21 AM

Well, fell asleep early last night and awakened when the lights/power went out. It began raining hard and after setting fans up with generator I fell asleep in darkness. Around 12pm/1am I woke up and all lights were back on. Hooray for CFE! Rained lightly with light winds until this morning. Looks very black South over Pacific Ocean. Looks like the main storm should arrive this afternoon/ tonite. Palapa guys came by right now from TS so roads are open. Hold on! Tio

Russ - 8-31-2017 at 07:43 AM

2¢ ... I'm looking at a projected path for Lidia. Making land and then continuing over land up BCS. Just doesn't seem reasonable it would follow the mountain terrain for that distance. Starting to pick up stuff that may blow around now. Jeeze, I had no idea how much stuff I have laying around since last year. Windy and cooler though so far.

rogbag - 8-31-2017 at 08:34 AM

Real windy this morning, but not much rain here in LB. The Sea of Cortez looks pretty angry - I should probably move my kayaks in from the seawall out front.
We will await further developments.

Well Russ, that's exactly what Odile did.

Russ - 8-31-2017 at 08:46 AM

Yep, only worth 2¢.... maybe centavos. I can never remember what storm did what when.

vandenberg - 8-31-2017 at 10:53 AM

Lidia has just arrived in Loreto. Heavy rain with 30 to 40 mph winds

10 minutes later: rain stopped and wind calmed. But it sure was a warning for things to come.

Thanks for the post. My concerns are close by in Mulege.

elizabeth - 8-31-2017 at 11:16 AM

Amazing...rain in Nopoló, but none yet here in town in Loreto!

Mula - 8-31-2017 at 11:21 AM

Just a very windy dust storm in Lopez right now. No rain.

tiotomasbcs - 8-31-2017 at 01:44 PM

Strong wind gusts from the mtn side/east are just arriving. I have opened and secured front gates so the storm can't damage hinges or more. Last few hours we have had variable amounts of rain. Power still on. It is cooler which is welcome esp if power fails. Time is 2:30pm. My big, brave Labrador is a little nervous? Stay safe. Tio

Alm - 8-31-2017 at 02:51 PM

I don't remember what storm did what and when, with one exception - Odile. This one really stands out. The damages were well above 2 centavos.

The projected path of Odile was that it would only touch Cabo, and then follow the Pacific coast. Instead, it went right up the spine.

Russ - 8-31-2017 at 03:24 PM

Alm, Please understand that I was not referring to any storm with my 2 centavos remark. If you look at the previous page it was referenced to a post and the value of my opinion. Which I may have over priced.
Stay safe... everyone.
4:30 pm. Average 10 min. wind speed 24mph and gust to 30mph. Mostly clear skies North, West & East starting to cloud up a little South. It's been blowing hard all day.

View towards Mulege

Sweetwater - 8-31-2017 at 03:54 PM

Odile ate the infrastructure of roads with it's rain totals. Harvey is doing that dance in Texas. Good luck to Baja with this storm.

chuckie - 8-31-2017 at 04:10 PM

Pics out of Cabo not good..and just starting..

StuckSucks - 8-31-2017 at 04:10 PM

StuckSucks - 8-31-2017 at 04:12 PM

Additional strengthening is possible this evening before the center
moves over the Baja California peninsula, and while the chance
of Lidia becoming a hurricane is low it is still non-zero.
Weakening is expected after 12 h due to the center moving up the
spine of the Baja California peninsula, but tropical-storm-force
winds are likely to spread up the Gulf of California well east of
the center. Lidia is forecast to become a remnant low by 72 h
due to interaction with land and cold water, and further weakening
is anticipated over the cold waters west of the northern Baja
California peninsula at 96 and 102 h.

Lidia is a large system accompanied by very heavy rains which are
already occurring over portions of western Mexico and Baja
California Sur. Regardless of how strong Lidia becomes,
life-threatening flash floods and mudslides will be a significant
hazard over these areas. In addition, the mountainous terrain of
the Baja California peninsula could enhance the winds at higher
elevations.

BajaMama - 8-31-2017 at 04:23 PM

Thanks for the updates, especially my Punta Chivato neighbors. Hopefully the road will be passible early October.

StuckSucks - 8-31-2017 at 04:31 PM

Looks a little stormy in Cabo:

bajabuddha - 8-31-2017 at 04:45 PM

What Lidia ("The Tattoo'ed Lady???) doesn't pack in winds she does pack in moisture and size. DO NOT underestimate this storm; damage will come from flooding, and probably lots of it. What falls high must come down, especially for 'baseball mitt' basins like the Sierras above Mulege. That will be the greatest cause of problems. Me heart is out for all of Baja... looks like she'll go almost all the way to Ensenada. Buena Suerte, Bajanistas. Stay put and stay dry, and stay out of vados.

WOW. Just now ran the windyty loop for the peninsula. Impressive to watch; the colors dictate the strongest winds, etc... this will be a very strong storm considering the smaller magnitude of the 'hurricane' scale. East side and warmer waters of the SOC are all in play. The 'eye' is right now at the tip of SW Baja, and the path looks quite ominous if you run the loop. I suggest all involved look it up and tune in.

On the right side of the Windity display, there are settings to show rain, or waves instead of wind. Run the loop again set for rain to get a different perspective.

It doesn't look like it will drop what Odile did, but I am sure there will be damage!

Strong winds and on and off heavy rain here all night starting about 5PM yesterday. Gusty and rainy ahora. So far CFE and Telmex have kept one step ahead of the pretty severe lashing. The rain is soooooo welcome but you can change the name of the capital from La Paz to La Bache. Looking forward to a snow day.

Alm - 9-1-2017 at 11:08 AM

It's what Bob said - comes in bands. Several fronts one after another.

BA and BOLA will get it Fri night through Sat afternoon. Expected rain totals there won't be terribly high because it will pass quickly. I was afraid it would be another Odile but it doesn't look like that.

Elias Calles Hammered by Lidia

Cielomar - 9-1-2017 at 11:20 AM

We really got hammered by Lidia here in Elias Calles (s. of Pescadero). San Jacinto arroyo is a raging river and almost up to the bridge. Looks like our community well has been flooded out. Paul and Mary's house is gone and garage with his truck in it is next. Still raining at noon on Sept 1. Too early to assess detailed damage but not good!!

David K - 9-1-2017 at 11:47 AM

So sad... reminds me of Baja Bus (Max) and his live posts from La Cocina Pacifica in Elias Calles, way back when...

Russ - 9-1-2017 at 11:52 AM

Udo, I'm taking photos of the monitor. Sometimes when I zoom in on it it doesn't focus sharply. Then send it to photobucket to post after editing it a little.
1:30 light rain for awhile now. Had to close the windows again. Almost 1/2" total today ...

Hope Mulege is well prepared for this storm. Lot worse than I suspected here in Nopolo. Lost a few flower pots of my banister that went at least 70 lbs, Never expected the heavy winds. They definitely were not predicted. One of the most unpredictable storms I've seen here in 27 years.

I have stored everything that could blow around but drinking water is a problem as the water purification plants have been closed the last 3 days so we are unable to stock up....oh well...boiled water it is.

Wind staring to pick up now (1:30 pm) from the SE and it is starting to rain...and there are hundreds of monarch butterflies fluttering everywhere...cormorants are all rafted up now too resting up.

tiotomasbcs - 9-1-2017 at 01:26 PM

I have not been out from my house today in Pescadero so I am curious about flooding arroyos in town and of course Arroyo Grande at Playa San Pedrito aka Los Esteros. San Pedrito Trailer Park was located out at the beach and flooded numerous times between 87' and 2001 when Julieta took her completely away into the sea, along with some gringo walls, garage, truck, etc. Hope you're well, CieloMar. your big river is running full tilt?? Almost over the top? I'm safe as my property and house is a couple rows back from beach. Leaky roof, I got that and it's still raining hard at times in sheets at almost 2:30pm. Stay safe! Tio

mooose29 - 9-1-2017 at 03:43 PM

Just got an email from our friends that are staying at our home in Punta Chivato very windy and rain off and on. We had an outside guest bedroom door blow off the hinges and also our garage door was blown off it's hinges. Now keep in mind both doors had previous wind damage and in the case of the Garage door it is being replaced next week because it was completely shot and I had my doubts that it would survive this storm. The bedroom door was also in need of replacing so I guess this will speed up the process. Both doors have survived 10+ years of storms and Baja so I consider this damage more the affect of the cumulative nature of things in Baja and not just this storm. Stay safe everyone.

We have thousands of monarch butterflies and some big dragon flies which are unusual here flying all around sucking nectar from the jasmine & nasturtiums like there is no tomorrow. They appear all beat up the poor things.

the wind has picked up to about 30 knots or more from the east so lots of dust & had to close the doors..one last jump in the pool before I cover it...again. Can hardly see town now...and so it begins..tick tick tick

Maybe even wetter in the hills to the west. I wonder how the new park in Santa Rosalia will hold up.
