The sad part about this is that the calf was separated from its mother for a long time. It was put in the holding pen with people in the pen which increased the stress on the calf (This is not Sea World). They also took time for measurements and genetic samples. They also admitted that the people in the pen were there to keep the calf from being entangled in the sea pens' nets, apparently not realizing that that is the major problem in the first place, entanglement in totoaba gill nets. At some point they determined the calf was sufficiently stressed so they returned it to where they caught it. No telling if its mother was still near for nursing.

This money would be better spent on fully enforcing a gillnet ban and finding alternatives for the fishermen.
