Can anyone pick up my child's teddy bear from San Felipe?

colleenwhitaker - 1-8-2018 at 04:24 PM

Hello-
We went through San Felipe on Jan 6th and sadly left my 6 year old son's most favorite teddy bear and baby blanket at the hotel!! They have informed me it is impossible to mail it.

I'm looking for any kind soul who is passing through San Felipe and could pick it up and then mail back to me from the US. I will gladly pay all postage and additional funds to cover your time and inconvenience. It is his most special baby toy he has had since he was born.

The hotel is called El Capitan and is in San Felipe. They are holding the items at the desk. If you are willing to help out please let me know and I'll send along my details and we can arrange payment via paypal or whatever works for you.

Thank you in advance!
Colleen

fandango - 1-8-2018 at 04:39 PM

Colleen: I plan on staying at that hotel towards the end of this month. I would be happy to pick the bear up and get it to you.

What did you think of the hotel? Was the parking secure?

John Harper - 1-8-2018 at 06:44 PM

Hopefully it's not stuffed with drugs.

John

TMW - 1-8-2018 at 07:03 PM

I've stayed there many times and it was OK. Not great and not bad. I have a friend who stayed there I think last year and his room had bed bugs. I always liked the location and the parking has been secure.

Colleen,
No offense, and i feel really bad for bringing this up, but a first time poster, asking someone to pick up a package and bring it across the border, thats asking some complete stanger to accept alot of risk. i wish I could help out, but i'm just not willing to risk it,. Hoepfully someone else here is willing to do it, and it all turns out great for your child, but sorry, i just can bring myself to chance it.

If it weighs more than a couple of kilos you may have reason to worry. Otherwise it’s just a teddy bear for a kid who is probably too old to be playing the teddy bears still. Hopefully somebody comes through.

On second thought maybe this is the perfect time to wean Junior!

street value of 1 pound of crystal Meth - 36,000 dollars, whats the weight of a teddy bear and a blanket? and whats the weight of a teddy bear stuffed with 1 lb of meth, with one pound of filling pulled out?
I truely hope its some kid who wants his bear back, but for a 1st time poster, whom I know nothing about, I'm not hauling stuff across the border for them, even though I feel badly for the kid

mtgoat666 - 1-8-2018 at 10:48 PM

The teddy bear is probably full of yellow cake uranium destined for North Korea!.
Crikey!

Just how big is this teddy bear????

Hook - 1-9-2018 at 09:25 AM

What an embarrassing introduction to Nomads this has become.

Does the lady really need the amateur psychoanalysis and the drug running suggestions? If you have no reason to accommodate, butt out.

It's a teddy bear, fer cryin out loud! Maybe it has sentimental importance to the mom, as well. Is that so awful?

This might be the best example why so many good Nomads just don't post anymore.

colleenwhitaker - 1-9-2018 at 09:46 AM

Hello, and thanks fandango. After all that's been said, if you're still willing to help out I'd appreciate it. I guess I have no way of assuring people that it is just a teddy bear. As someone pointed out I'm new to the forum, and really just joined on someone's suggestion so I could get this dealt with.

Fandango - I don't know if there is a way we can continue this conversation off the forum (if you're still up for helping out)?

I thought El Capitan was a good hotel - fair price and very clean. The parking was safe.

Thanks.

x2. Well stated.

Howard - 1-9-2018 at 10:38 AM

I am a senior citizen and I still wish I had my teddy bear that I
named Freckles.

Teddy bears are important! Maybe tell your child that the bear is hibernating and might return when it wakes up.

Good luck.

WideAngleWandering - 1-9-2018 at 08:45 PM

I'll be at El Capitan in ~1 week. U2U me and I'll gladly bring it back and mail it to you at the end of Jan.

billklaser - 1-10-2018 at 07:35 AM

I still have my Teddy Bear from 1950. On display in my bedroom. Viva the Bear's... Hope you get it back.

Colleen: look for the U2U where you sign in. That is for private messages. I just sent a message to you.

BajaBlanca - 1-10-2018 at 10:21 PM

You posted to the right place and I am sure teddy will get home.

So, I have a story: when I was a teen in Brazil, I went to babysit a 6 year old who had a teddy named Pierre. The family had just arrived in Rio and their place wasn't ready yet, so they were in a hotel on the 28th floor.

Mom and dad go off and pretty soon it is time for the kid (can't remember his name) to go to bed and he puts up a royal fuss. At one point, he goes to the barred window and tosses PIERRE 28 FLOORS DOWN into the pool area. I call down and no way to get the teddy as the pool area was closed down for the night.

I felt so bad.

When Mom and Dad got home and heard the story, they laughed and said "we've been trying so long to think of a way to get rid of that dirty raggedy ole bear!" and they were so happy!

Isn't it interesting how the brain works? This happened some 40 years ago and I have never forgotten. The bear's name comes right to mind and if my life depended on it, too bad because I have never been able to recall the kid's name.

WideAngleWandering - 1-11-2018 at 10:14 AM

Alright folks, we're on it. The WaW Baja 2018 Expedition now has a mission.

We will locate and escort one lost Teddy Bear to the nearest USPS outpost north of the border for safe passage back home.

Bonus points if it happens to be full of sweet, sweet drugs when we find it.

JoeJustJoe - 1-11-2018 at 11:08 AM

This is another example why people like to scam old people.

If this happened to me I would simply take my son to "Toys"R"Us" and buy him a new "friend" or toy for the lost blanket, or tell him he is big boy, and doesn't need the blanket anymore.

If I had to have the items back, I would prepay international shipping forms, and have everything filled out including an empty box and then offer a few pesos to a hotel employee to ship it to me back in the states.

What I wouldn't do is pick up strangers suitcases, or teddy bears, and take it across the US border, where Border Patrol K-9 sniffs out "drugs" in the Teddy, like in this example below:

Border Patrol K-9 sniffs out meth hidden in stuffed toy dog

It took the well-trained nose of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection canine to sniff that something was amiss with a plush toy dog at a California immigration checkpoint earlier this week.

It doesn't matter if some are wondering "what Joe would do."

I will tell you my opinion anyway.

Hopefully, MrBill, will visit this thread shortly, and tell us what his parents would have done in a similar situation, since MrBill, has written extensively how his parents, and especially his father was never up for any awards for "father of the year."

Most people here of the " spare the rod and spoil the child" generation, I bet if when you were young, your parents wouldn't worry about such foolishness of a lost teddy bear, and you would be lucky if your parents, wouldn't smack you upside the head, and tell you to stop your crying over the lost of your blankey

If the OP is not just having a little fun here, or thinking of ways to smuggler contraband across the US/Mexican border, and is actually serious with her concerns about the child's lost blankey, and teddy bear.

I would simply tell her not to worry too much about the lost of a security blanket because when your child grows up, there is always "therapy" to help alleviate the years of painful memories starting in childhood.

caj13 - 1-11-2018 at 03:51 PM

hey Joe,
so somehow i think alot of people are either purposely ignoring, or missing my pioint (as well as yours).

I have absolutely no issues with a kid and his bear, they are important, for alot of reasons. thats not the problem I have.

My issue was - and still is - it is a swmall chance that this is a set-up for someone trying to get Drugs out of Mexico into the USA.

Tell a heart wrenching story - perfect - a kid and his lost bear. Can anyone be a hero - rescue the bear!

so as you posted - turns out occasionally - there is no kid - just a bear stuffed with contraban that an unknown individual duped some good samaratan into picking up and transporting it across the border, then mailing it to whoever - wherever!

is thats whats happening here? probably not - but really folks, why are you castigating anfd belittleing those who point out the unknown risk here?
1. first time poster -
2. Story doesn't seem to add up hotel says its impossible to mail it?
seriously ? (BTW fed ex and DHL both carry stuff from Mexico to USA) - why not just send a prepaid mailer to the Hotel, anyone there would be willing to take the 30 seconds to stuff the bear into an envelope and hand it back to the fed ex, or DHL guy)

iso - unknown poster, telling a story that at least has hints of errors or untruths in it - small chance i may be being played.

I'm not willing to take the chance - small risk that it is - because of the potential consequences.

Others here are willing to take that risk - I have no problem with that - more power to them, they probably end up a hero to a 6 year old kid and his parents. Hopefully!

But i don't understand people trying to paint me as the devil incarnate, but if thats what floats their boat - more power to em!

I think all your points are reasonable. Look at how many "nice" people got duped by the Prince of Nigeria and forked over their bank account numbers. Good luck to whoever rolls the dice.

It isn't hard to tell if the teddy bear has drugs in it. As the Chinese say "if the iron is hot don't pick it up, if it is cold pick it up".

I'm not so sure about that, but instead of argueing about it, how about a real world test of your postulate!

so I'll show up in Bakersfield with 10 Teddy Bears, you can hold em, feel em, look at em, and tell me which ones have 20 grams of "fentenyl" wrapped in plastic inside? obviously it would be sand or sugar -
Just for reference here, the info I found says that 20 grams ofpure fentenyl after cutting the street value would be about 1/4 of a million if im doing my math right!

so for every one you get right, I'll pay you 100 bucks - easy money for you! of course if you get it wrong, you owe me 100 buck per wrong guess!

It would be fun, we could make it like a game show - broadcast it to interested Baja Nomad participants, and you could show everyone how dumb I am!
what do you say?

I am dead serious about this, just want to make sure you aren't going to back out or disapear before i go blow a couple of hundred on teddy bears!

BTW if by some miracle I do win a couple of hundred from you , after the cost of the bears, everything gets donated to Blancas scholarship charity!

It sounds like you will be picking up the bear on your way south, so he might as well ride up front with you and enjoy the ride!

I hope you will work him into some of your photo shoots (which are always outstanding) because what's wrong with sharing a little Teddy love?

WideAngleWandering - 2-2-2018 at 11:07 AM

We made it to San Felipe for the pickup, but chit's gone sideways. I found Ivan bound and gagged behind the desk with no sign of the bear or the drugs. It's starting to look like Teddy may have double-crossed us and gone on the lamb with the package. Someones gonna have to pay up. My employer will not be happy about this.
