Had a few kilos of Christmas Carnitas confiscated by US Customs when visiting north for the Holidays one year. They said the pork wasn't allowed. As good as it smelled, I suspect they allowed it into there lunch room.

GN ag ck point asked if I had meat and boarded my RV to check the fridge awhile back.

US customs took the sliced ham from my RV fridge at Tecate a couple of weeks ago. Only a few slices left from the package...

It was only as I was driving away that I remembered it was turkey ham, but I had not thought of that when they asked if I had any pork or ham and I foolishly said I had some.

The agent pawed through the fridge and ignored the package of Jamon Serrano which I had not remembered or mentioned, along with the beer and wine in the fridge.

They don't care where it came from, you can't bring it north.
Why risk a trip to secondary for a slice of 2 week old ham.:?:

THIS is why I never ever bring anything back. When they ask what's in the bed of the pickup, I tell them (truthfully) empty coolers and dirty clothes. They take the occasional peek into the coolers, but I've never had a search of the dirty clothes (I leave the dirtiest underwear and socks right on top, just in case).

And if we have extra food on hand after a trip down, we pack it up and give it away to our local friends. They're happy to have some fresh meat or produce without having to do the long haul into town, and we get to help feed some hardworking folks and their families, even if it's a just a meal or two. Plus, not having any meat in the vehicle on the trip north gives me a built-in excuse to stop at Seaside Market for a hunk of Cardiff Crack (that's Burgundy Pepper Marinated Tri-Tip, for those of you unfortunates who've never had it). Ham? Meh.

No pork of ANY KIND has been allowed. I had some Oscar Myer cold cuts from the U.S. taken back in 2001... cooked ham sandwich slices.

It is (was) chicken that could cross cooked, but not raw.

No (raw) eggs are allowed.

Seriously, it is just so much easier to give away any excess fresh food and produce rather than argue with the CBP personnel at our border. This I decided after an agent at Tecate sent me to secondary when I informed him I had limes (they are permitted) because (he said) limes are like oranges! In secondary, after waiting 15 minutes for an ag agent to get to me, laughed and sent me on my way when she read "limes" on the paper (she didn't even look at them).

I never bring anything back. But do take stuff down that I can't get in Mexico. The biggest thing being IPA beer. Might take 10 cases down for a 2-3 week trip with friends. Have done it maybe 50 times. Never been a problem. Just keep it out of plain sight.

The bottom line with 99.9% of the stuff is that "The inspector has final discretion" and can do whatever he/she/it wants to.

Over the decades I brought back a lot of stuff some of which they allowed and some of which they didn't and some of which I 'smuggled' (mostly in my youth). In recent years we have adopted our own policy. We only bring booze back. :saint:

Even at that we make sure its only one liter every 30 days. :fire:
