MEX 1 vs MEX 5 from Baja Sur to border

elfbrewery - 2-10-2018 at 06:11 PM

What road would you suggest? I have a good truck, but a low clearance trailer. Are the potholes still as bad on Mex 1? I hear there is improvement on MEX 5, but are there still trouble spots?
Thanks for any input you can provide.

Mex 5 for sure. 23 miles of gradedish road and some vados beats all the small towns and traffic on Mex 1 any day.

WE JUST CAME IN BY # 5 road , only 18 more miles to go/you have a lot of new road bed that is good..we have a nice hauler motor home !! NO PROBLEMO !!! ps.=

MX 5 is rocky, dirt, bumpy and dusty.
Bob and weave the potholes or rocky, dirt, bumpy and dusty.

Dont be that guy. Go for it! If you survive so much the better. It’s Baja for fux sake!

To me, Hwy. 5 for the win. No farm towns or mountain roads and no city of Ensenada to drive through. Just 18 or a few more unpaved, graded miles and 50 narrow, dippy miles north of Puertecitos.

Anyone saying other than MX 5 is out of their minds.

This is fake news. One small stretch that is graded to perfection. If someone can't handle that they shouldn't be in Baja.

We towed a 16' boat up Mex 5 late last month and I think we'll go that way on the way back. I don't recommend trying the cutoff that takes you around Coco's (yet) but otherwise it is in better shape than it was last year at the same time.

Just take it easy and stop once in a while to check everything for peace of mind. Have a cold one at Cocos and rest a spell. No hurry no worry. Just watch out for the 18 wheelers on the curves.

Tom Miller always used to boast that he never had a breakdown. I asked him what the secret was to his stellar luck and , to quote him.." I drive slow, If I think I am driving slow, I think again and slow down." He drove a 1978 Subaru station wagon. If you have a trailer, take to heart, mind and soul his advice.

You bet son.....I have only lived in MX for 19 years fulltime and take 5 every time.
It is STILL rocky, dirty, bumpy and dusty.
Now don't you feel like an idiot?

I have seen a lot of JZ’s posts, and the videos and reports are excellent and informative. He has shared his opinion freely, particularly with drones that will save other parties such as myself interested in owning a drone a lot of wasted time and money experimenting. I don’t remember him bragging about any of his toys, unless you consider simply exposing them in a video in their normal use qualifies as bragging. Maybe we all need to be careful of posting any pictures of our toys for fear of appearing excessive and offending someone. As to road conditions on hwy 5, he is probably right.

Thanks for your opinion, Lancair! This is two different threads you've stuck up for young Jizzly, glad to see his fan club is alive and well. Keep up the good work. I hope some day you'll raise him out of puberty.
