Tell us about some place we probably haven't been to in Baja but you'd recommend

Who's got a route to try and/or a place to see?

The Comondus is an interesting journey in itself. Old Californio ranchos - very hospitable folks. Some pictographs, habitation sites along the way, El Horno. The wine making at San Miguel. El Camino Real parallels the road for quite a while. Take your time and appreciate the history.

San Jose de Magdelena has a fantastic little museum...the best graveyard in all Baja and an amazing arroyo where water runs all the time....a real river! Well worth the detour off the highway!

I second the Comondus too...my personal favorite, and SAn Borja in second place.

Backpack the SPM, climb a few of the peaks.

Do multi day pack trip to see canyons and rock paintings of sierra de san francisco.

I'm gonna come see you soon. Will bring my 2 kids. We haven't ridden any of that part of Baja.

Let's say 2-3 days of ridding. Two days travel for us from LA and back.

Where will you take us? What's your recommended ride(s)?

Just go through the trip reports forum posts. Baja Nomad's greatest travel idea resource.

bajatrailrider - 7-26-2018 at 07:24 AM

We could ride local. Or ride to El Coyote on abandon routes Next day ride South to Jardines. Next day North to San Vicente. Two track dry lakes Dunes beach Single track . The routes I have off the beaten track. Don't know how your boys ride the trails could be hard or easy many routes. I don't ride fast just safe but can make ride . B or A ride if you guys are into that. What part of LA you coming from.

JZ - 7-26-2018 at 09:21 AM

We are in Calabasas, just above Malibu.

They are 14 and 16 and have been riding for about 8 years. Pretty skilled.

....thats what folks from woodland hills say!

JZ - 7-26-2018 at 10:33 AM

Yeah, they say they are right next to Calabasas.

TMW - 7-26-2018 at 11:22 AM

If the gates are not locked the No Wimp Trail.

Run out to Timbabichi and run up and down the coast.

You could do the Pole Line Road with Ken Cooke but it's slow running with 4 wheelers. You could team up with Bajatrailrider and/or ehall and do it on bikes only, make it a loop out of Cohabuso Jct.

Do the Guajademi Trail from San Isidro to Mulege but you may need to bulldog your bikes down part of the mountain if it's not open. Make a loop from San Isidro toward Mulege then down the San Raymundo arroyo back to the coast north of San Juanico.

Follow the San Felipe 250 race course from Hwy 5 KM233 north to the south end of Laguna Salada then back south to the Borrego crossing at Hwy 3 KM179. Instead of going to Hwy 3 at KM179 take the loop around C. el Arrajal and back to Hwy 3 at KM160.

Have you been up or down the La Rumorosa dirt road that parallels Hwy 2 down the mountain?

The possibilities are endless.

Ok I lived in Rancho park W LA still have 4 income homes there. As ride with me its safety first I find even on hard single track slow speeds no injured riders. While hi speed dirt road big time wrecks. So as long as your Boys ride to live another day all good.:)

90% chance I'm going to run Timbabichi the last week in August. Mapped it all out. Read your trip reports from a few years back and I'm pumped about it.

Tell me about La Rumorosa.

TMW - 7-27-2018 at 02:44 PM

I've been down it 3 or 4 times over the years, always interesting with a great view. Here are some pictures I took going down and posted on Nomad. You don't want to go off the side. It has been used in several Baja 500 and 1000 SCORE races.

Holy crap! I'm gonna do this! Thank you.

AKgringo - 7-27-2018 at 07:20 PM

The old La Rumorosa grade was my intended route (going up it) this past fall, but mechanical difficulties forced me to scrub that trip. I'm thinking this October or November it is going to be on my to do list!

JZ - 7-27-2018 at 08:20 PM

Hey Tom, I think a know where this is, but can you drop us some GPS coordinates?

advrider - 7-28-2018 at 08:39 AM

I think I rode the whole trail? We ended just North of Catavina and started the single track at the mud hills? Did I miss something? It was an awesome trail and made me happy that I had installed the Rekluse on the 500 before this trip...

JZ, Just before the toll road heads down the mountain is the turnoff. You turn off to the right and a little later turn right onto a dirt road and follow it down.

TMW - 7-28-2018 at 11:27 AM

After you get down you can follow the arroyo toward the hwy and there is a road that goes east before the hwy. I suggest you get past the military checkpoint on the hwy before trying to get on the hwy.

This may be a better view of the turnoff.

Thx. For some reason I can never figure out how to enter GPS coordinates in the format you are using. What is format is: 32-33 13 x 116-02 51?

Edit: looks like I need to put a zero at the end.

Highway turn-off
32° 33.130'N
116° 2.510'W

Turn off to the dirt
32° 33.130'N
116° 1.990'W

JZ - 7-28-2018 at 01:32 PM

There are all kinds of crazy roads down there. Is it pretty obvious which way to go when you are on it? Looks like about 9 miles, but not quite as many switch backs as I expected. How far East is the checkpoint?

JZ - 7-28-2018 at 01:52 PM

Ok, this bottom route looks a little more interesting. About 12 miles.

advrider - 7-29-2018 at 11:19 AM

ehall, do you have anymore info on the 22 day trail, what do you mean by both sides? Do you have a track you could share?
