I think you will enjoy Nomad GregN's history of Santiago, a town that began with a Jesuit mission and has amazing hidden attractions...

We really liked Santiago the two times we have gone.

The zoo is extensive, and is the only one in Baja Sur. Not state of the art but animal friendly as far as I could tell.

Sol de Mayo is so beautiful and totally unexpected.

The zoo was closed last August, but maybe that was a seasonal thing and not permanent.

I first toured the zoo in 1985 and was fascinated such an attraction existed. When I visited the zoo in 2001 with 'jeans' she was driven to tears at seeing the condition and cramped quarters some of the animals were in, especially Leo the lion. Through her efforts and fundraising, the injured lion was treated, and I think transferred to a better place?

From 2001:

Here is 'Leo' who can barely move a couple paces in this tiny cage. We hope to help move Leo into a proper enclosure suitable for him. The zoo is at of the end of the paved Santiago side road, south of Los Barriles.

I don't think that zoo has been open for several years now. I believe all the animals are gone and it permanently shut down.
