Toyota truck question.

deportes - 9-12-2018 at 07:30 AM

Is the 2003 Tacoma 4x4 automatic trd package good for Baja trip or is it better manual transmission, someone is selling one with 63k miles clean for 1600 bucks. Thanks

David K - 9-12-2018 at 07:49 AM

Personally, I like an automatic for 4WD travel (and long border lines). It is a personal thing for many. I had 3 manual 4WD vehicles and now 4 automatic 4WDs. I prefer the automatics. Only my 3 Tacoma automatics of all the automatics I owned were free of any transmission problems... Oh, what a feeling!

That price seems to be incredible unless the truck is crashed ... average price for a truck like that in the US is between $8,000 & $20,000 depending on what its equipped with, mileage, etc ... no matter what it is, unless its crashed or stolen, $1600 is a good deal for a Toyota.

If you saw that truck, listed at that price on a Craigs'list ad, it is surely a scam! I will bet that there is no phone number listed, just an e-mail contact.

I have a 2004 Tacoma 4x4 with an automatic. I travel all over Baja and the Mojave Desert including Death Valley and it works great. There are advantages with a manual tranny such as a little better gas mileage and easy to start if battery is dead (just push it) and a few others that you'll probably never use or need.

If it's not a scam buy it.

Don't buy it!

Instead send me the phone number and I'll check it out, just to make certain it's not a rip off.

Kelly Blue Book has the top of line 2003, 4WD, Tacoma, xtra cab, TRD package in excellent condition in San Diego at $9000 - $12,000

Salvage could be a good thing if the repair has been done properly. when I buy something like that I USUALLY KEEP IT UNTIL THE USE FAR EXCEEDS THE VALUE.

Do a vehicle history report and also have your mechanic check it out. The only thing I can think of that was a problem was the frame rust if it was from back east.

Frankly if it is $16,000 that is a bit high but with 63,000 miles that is very low miles. If the truck is in excellent condition it would probably be worth it. Of course he may take $15,000 or less.

Here is a Craigslist ad for a 2004 Tacoma for $1800 in "Gold Country": https://goldcountry.craigslist.org/cto/d/2004-toyota-tacoma-... (AD WAS PUIIED!)

Let me know how this works out for you, I am in Alaska at the moment, and not interested in a long distance deal. I do believe this will fall in the 'too good to be true' category!

The O.P. has not indicated if he was looking at Craigslist, but that is my guess.

The add has been pulled.

So what's the scam? Are they just compiling a list of potential car buyers or is there something more sinister going on?

Glad to see that it got pulled right away, but other ridiculously good deals will pop up to replace it. I have never had the nerve to respond to one of them.

I am not sure what the scam is, they could be just harvesting e-mail addresses for spamming, or they might be hoping some sucker will send them a deposit to hold a fictional vehicle!

I once saw the same ad pop up simultaneously on the Sacramento, and Anchorage Craigslist!

This^ I sold a 1997 with 98,000 for $7500 to the first person that looked at it. The truck was very clean but the do hold their value.

Sad to say many scams on CL. The best years to Toy 4x4 are 01/04 good looking little problems. Mike bought a 03 Trd 4x4 120.000 miles few years ago as new 1500.00. His only disappointment is auto trans very slow little power. He bought same truck same color same miles with stick shift one year before. At my advice of getting stick shift now he is not happy with auto trans. On hard core 4X4ing auto or stick has its advantage one is not better then the other. At the end of the day the stick and clutch for me last longer then auto. Also way cheaper to repair if needed.
