Hurricane Rosa may cut across Baja Norte Oct. 1 or 2

 Pages:  1

David K - 9-27-2018 at 08:33 PM

This could mean flooded arroyos. I would be prepared for Hwy. 1 and 5 to be cut off for a day or two.

Here is the warning from http://eebmike.com/ :

Hurricane Rosa Discussion Number 12
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL EP202018
800 PM PDT Thu Sep 27 2018

Rosa has continued to rapidly intensify during the past several
hours, with a distinct and warm eye noted on satellite images along
with deep eyewall convection. A blend of the latest Dvorak
estimates gives an initial wind speed estimate of 125 kt, making
Rosa the seventh category 4 hurricane of the very busy 2018 eastern
Pacific hurricane season. It is worth noting that this value ties
2015 for the highest observed seasonal total in the basin during
the satellite era.

The hurricane still has a chance to intensify further given that it
is still over warm waters within light shear. By the weekend,
however, Rosa will encounter more marginal SSTs, and the shear
will likely increase. These conditions should cause a significant
weakening of the hurricane by early next week, and for Rosa to fall
back to a tropical storm by Tuesday. The intensity forecast isn't
particularly confident at long range because of the possibility of a
trough interaction somewhat offsetting the effects of cool eastern
Pacific waters and dry stable air. So far the guidance is fairly
consistent, and the forecast continues to show steady weakening as
Rosa approaches Baja California.

Wouldn't it be fun to be in the middle of the Mulege to San Isidro Trail when it hit?

The storm right on Rosa's tail could be an even bigger threat. The attached forecast is over a week out, so a lot could change, but take a look!:

In 2016 we woke up on the beach in Bahia Conception about dawn in the eye of Newton. Had no idea it was even a thing till we got to Santa Rosalia and found out what we were in. We were the last two trucks out of town heading north late that afternoon after fording 4 rivers running across the main road that no one would drive thru. That night in Viciano it was rainbows and partly cloudy skies. Next day in San Rafael it was crystal clear and 8 to 10 foot waves breaking on the beach with some great fishing after the surf died down a bit. Good times for sure.

It is called Hurricane Rosa NOW, what it will be in the future is only a guess, like the guess of global warming 20-50 years from now.

Rosa will likely be a tropical storm or maybe only a depression... but it is Rosa. San Diego weather is calling for rain Monday and Tuesday caused by it. These are also not my names or estimates but those of the weather links I posted. I don't make up the news, I only report what I saw.

I'm just getting to know Windy and love it. However, still not sure what the difference is between the ECMWF and the GFS Models. ECMWF has that one maybe staying west while GFS has it still coming back right over the coast. Is one considered more accurate than the other? Thanks, just curious.

Russ - 9-28-2018 at 05:30 AM

Predicting a strom/hurricane track has always been a crap shoot to do accurately. The 2am track changed little from DK's 8pm one. Moved a little more north and the change to a storm has changed to down grade after it crosses over land now. It still has a lot of time to change so stay tuned for more accurate info. But DK's header is correct this morning. Photbucket is taking too long so I'll edit this when I can to show the newest track.

Jees Goat your info is alarming! If Rosa does strengthen as forecast in DK's post and folks listen to your Dibble and not be prepared it could cause major problems for them. Everyone should have a plans for disasters of this sort. That's just being smart not "alalmist hysteria"

ECMWF and the GFS Models

A quick google says they are different mathematical models for weather prediction. The difference is in the complex equations employed and the way they use a vast amount of input data.

For both models, predictions further out in the future become less certain because errors compound with time. The differences in modeling techniques can cause future predictions to diverge.

I don't know which one has a better track record.

While watching TV reporting on Florence, the meteorologist compared the two models, his statement was that the European model was generally accepted as a bit more accurate. Of course this is for east coast hurricanes, so not sure you can compare or not.

Central Baja is abuzz with Rosa reports and people preparing for possible flooding, winds and a big a$$ swell. Yes it is very rare for hurricanes to hit here but it has happened...so best to expect the worst and be ready for it just in case.
The fishing coops will be pulling the boats out extra high this time. Unfortunately our lobster season was to begin on Sunday...not gonna happen!
But if you plan to travel through northern or centra Baja please keep posted on Rosa....oh and dont cross any running arroyos!

Russ - 9-28-2018 at 08:28 AM

I just looked at the 8am forecast track and it has changed a bit. Downgraded to a storm well off the coast now and has move a bit north. Still can't get photobucket to copy downloads to post so go to ebbmike.co and check it out.
edit: 8am forecast
Since an eyewall replacement cycle is ongoing, Rosa is no longer
expected to intensify. In the short term, some additional
weakening is likely, typical of major hurricanes undergoing eyewall
replacements. If this process completes within the next 24 hours,
there will be some opportunity for the hurricane to re-intensify
while the shear is low and the hurricane remains over warm SSTs.
However, steady weakening is anticipated beginning Saturday night
since the cyclone is forecast to cross over much cooler SSTs. By 96
h, a weaker Rosa will likely approach the northern west coast of
the Baja California peninsula and the resulting interaction with
land will likely cause the cyclone to dissipate. It is worth
noting that a farther northwest track would likely result in Rosa
weakening faster than currently indicated, while a farther
southeast track could allow Rosa to maintain a slightly stronger
circulation as it crosses the northern Gulf of California.

Windy.com shows rain and wind in BA on Oct 1-2. About 5 or 10mm rain accumulation in 5 days, depends on what model you click on. Same for BOLA.
The system began deteriorating earlier yesterday and was further downgraded overnight. It might still spike up a little, eeb/NOAA is talking about possible re-intensifying if you read their report.

It was actually the flash floods attributed to a chubasco that messed up the town and Hwy. 5. It was a big deal and I do recall kids at school (3rd or 4th grade) talking about it (Baja was popular where I went to school).

Probability is about zero.

This storm is minor, maybe an inch or 2 over 3 days in SoCal.

All you geriatrics getting high anxiety over the weather forecast need to get a hobby, a hobby like pot smoking! Crikey! The storm is gonna be a big nothing burger!

That's the truth, even in San Diego and I suppose Ensenada. And of course, in TJ, being a hilly city, tons of garbage will be washed into the TJ river mouth.

Motor oil, pesticides, fertilizers, plastic and perhaps sewage from inundated sewer systems. Stay out of coastal waters near the cities for a week or so if there are heavy rains.

This will almost undoubtedly affect our drive down 5 in about 3 weeks heading to Mulege. A lot of rain in the area of construction could make that area a mess along with the construction around Puertocitis.

Were on our way back grom our Central Baja Loop trip, we had to cut it short due to Rosa.

Yesterday rescue crues (CFE, TelMex, Military (vehicles all lined up and ready to go) and Proteccion Civil) were scrambling in GN.

Miltary on the road with supplies and ready to help, driving to wherever they're going.

Last night it sprinkled a bit in San Quintín, today around 9am when leaving there was a slight rain for a couple of miles north. Lots of Proteccion Civil and local and federal police activity.

As we drove down the grade to Sto Tomas the traffic was stopped for about half hour for construction work. As the southbound traffic passed us there was a big contingent of Red Cross rescue vehicles (all terrain tractor like, small rescue vehicles and a big command center truck) heading to the storm path.

We're at the entrance of maneadero at El Pariente havind some clam c-cktails and fresh oysters... no rain but very cloudy... warm and humid.

Rosa seems to really like Asuncion....it has been blowing hard out here at the point and light rain most of the day....well over 30-35 knots....hard to stand up in the wind and still a humongous swell!!! My gardens are toast but at least we arent mopping up water. Dark now and the wind is picking up AGAIN!!!
I wish the fat lady would sing!

Well that sucks two bridges are out up Mex 5, was gonna take that north for the first time end of October. Do you think there will be a fix by then?

Mexico is well known for immediate response to this kind of problem. May be a dusty detour around the washouts for a while as they repair the damage, but my bet is it'll be passable within the week. Roads aren't just for us touristas but for commerce as well.

Absolutely correct.
Never been a washout in Baja that the locals did not find an alternate route in just a few days.
Might not be pretty, but always passable.
As soon as the mud turns to dust the way will be found, or created.

So I guess that is the area near Punta Bufeo?

PaulW - 10-2-2018 at 08:31 AM

Km 122 mentioned is a familiar place where the racers head west. It is south of La Ventana and S of the big road cut and curve.

David K - 10-2-2018 at 08:34 AM

It looks to me to be just a bit further north than Pta. Bufeo. Three bridges were mentioned as being out.

I'm hoping to hear any info about San Quintin/El Rosario.
The "other" route north/south.

shari - 10-2-2018 at 09:43 AM

It blew a gale all night again last night and rained some but this morning the sun is bustin out to dry things out so the clean up can begin here in Bahia Asuncion.

My heart ogees out to the folks on Cedros Island and San Felipe who are recovering from flooding.

Probability is about zero.

This storm is minor, maybe an inch or 2 over 3 days in SoCal.

All you geriatrics getting high anxiety over the weather forecast need to get a hobby, a hobby like pot smoking! Crikey! The storm is gonna be a big nothing burger!

Hows that nothingburger taste Goat?

Not sure where the pics earlier came from....I was responding to DK's post. My comment is meant for FB references generally.
