flying with a tripod?

joerover - 10-4-2018 at 12:05 PM

I try to fly with just a carry on bag, Saves a fortune in bag fees.
They have scowled at my miniature hand held tripod but let it pass.
Well, I want to bring a full size 2 pound tripod.

Anybody had problems with something like this in their carry on?

I once had a fat lady try to confiscate my Reese's peanut butter cups at the security check point in Tijuana. I showed her the receipt that I bought them in Los Angeles, not good enough. I called to the fat boss guy and said something about corruption, not good enough. I showed them a photo of the Mayan children in Chamula Chiapas, and said it was a regalo for them, yes good enough. The fat boss guy noticed that the lady at the store in Los Angelas had replaced my bag of peanut butter cups with a larger bag, (she had mentioned something about an abuela in Chamula.)

While this is only slightly similar, was a guy who had one
of those self pic taking sticks who had to leave it behind
while boarding, later found out they were sold in the Mex City airport

I'm convinced airport security is a crap shoot, totally at the whim of the person running the tunnel and the screener you happen to get.
I took my tent and poles in carry on without a hassle. No ground pegs but they did make sure the poles were all joined - was a popup tent. I think if they can make a case that it could be turned into a weapon you're hooped. I'd tape or zip tie the legs so they can't try to open it out. Give an update if it was pass or fail.

There is some overall length for sport items prohibited for carry on - I am guessing it's about 17-18 inches. As noted it's inconsistent and more likely based on how noticeable it is. IF they complain then they will check it.

Carry on bag limit length is 22inches

If you're anorexic with bones showing they probably won't mess with a skinny troll.

Motorcycle helmets don't fit in the overhead bins on any airplane I have been on....at the mercy of the flight attendant....was told at counter I could carry it on....

Never tried the tripod challenge.

For sure a helmet will fit in your average airplane bin, or even under the seat in front of you. Maybe not on those tiny regional jets that are only 3 seats per row, but every other normal plane it will fit easily.
