New paint for an old car?

AKgringo - 11-2-2018 at 04:00 PM

One of my Kias has never been to Baja before, but I plan on using it there soon. It was repainted once before I owned it, and the cheap paint is fading badly.

It has low milage, and is in good enough shape to justify painting it, even though I intend to abuse it off road! Time is a factor, it would have to be a quick turn around of not more than a couple of days!

Anybody have good results in a similar situation? I plan on making it to La Paz for some dental work, but would consider some other place from San Felipe or Guerrero Negro south.

One other question, if I get a good recommendation here, should I get the paint NOB, or are local shops able to do a good match to factory paint?

chuckie - 11-2-2018 at 04:22 PM

I have had 3 vehicles painted in Baja...One was good, one was Ok, One was atrocious...Good luck

OK would be fine with me, if the savings was worth having it done SOB. I am not restoring a classic, but this pig deserves new lip stick that is not faded and peeling!

They will never be able to match the factory color. If you are insisting on the factory color bring it with you. Otherwise, Pacifico yellow w/ blue trim is a fine choice!

Paint

I live near La Bufadora and have had 3 paint jobs here. 1 ok 2 great it's like anywhere else you get what you pay for.in the future when need arises I will have it done here. even a quality job is cheaper than in the States.

The are going to need more than a few days for the paint to cure so they can wet sand.

Listen to him.

Few days is not enough. Primer has to dry properly as does paint and clear coat.

Why paint it?
No forget what Pedro said,
The desert, she turn everything to chitt.

Have someone do a wrap, might last longer? Don't know what they cost?

AKgringo - 11-3-2018 at 09:15 AM

It looks like I need to do some homework on understanding automotive paint jobs! I was more concerned with the prep work rather than curing time, and clear coat is not something I need or want.

I may have to re-think this project. I don't want to rush the job as much as I don't want to be without wheels very long while I am there.

La Paz

Call Erik in La Paz at 612-122-7192. He does really fine work. Located by the propane gas plant out on the road to Todos Santos. You car gets sprayed inside a bay and not out in the dirt and wind. Imagine that! Not sure about timing but if you talk to him he might be able to speed things up. Great guy to work with.

Thank you for the referral! I hope he has some English skills, my Spanish is very basic. He would know best if I should bring my paint with me or get it there.

I am looking to paint my car in TJ.

All the bodyshops in my area do insurance repairs and won't touch painting, even with a 45 year longtime bodyshop owner friend.

All the allowed paints are water based in Ca. One friend suggested going to TJ or across the border into Arizona for a better two stage acrylic enamel.

One recommendation I just got in TJ from another friend was Carroceria y Pinturas del Pacifico on Arias Bernal #462, Colonia Central Zona Norte, which is near the border, sort of.

Decade ago I had pretty good results painting a van down there. I am sure it can be a hit or miss proposition. At least a more durable paint can be used.

If I go ahead and do it, I will report back. Anybody else, do the same.

Thanks to all here.

Good point about what California restricts from use or sale. I tried to find turpentine last year and failed!

I may shop for paint in Nevada on the way down to the border, if any Baja body shop thinks I need to.

Are you not one of those "nut jobs"? Why anyone stays there eludes me.

Most new cars have water based paint. You people whining about missing VOC based paint are dinosaurs that are operating on old info.
You should be thanking the environmental nuts that drive the ban of toxins - mfgs always find a solution after you force them to stop selling poison :light:

Most of you whiners would be dead from air pollution, water pollution, smoking or driving w/o seat belts, if it were not for the efforts of consumer advocates and nuts you despise.

Have you heard the term, 'if I could I would'?
I was born here and it is sad that a place that once had the best schools in America and prosperity for all has been put into reverse by the "progressives" taking us back to horse and buggy-era living conditions. Hey, we do have a billion dollar bullet train under construction that goes from nowhere to someplace else, in the Central Valley!

Whats holding you back? I too was born and raised in the same (no. SD county) area. I left the state over 20 years ago. Moved my a$$ets to a much friendlier state tax wise. Its easy! Just do it.

Complainers live to complain. California is a better place when the complainers leave!
Chippy left california, and 20 years later he regrets his decision to move to nowhere-hot-desert-hellhole, so he spends his time here complaining!

Wrong on so many levels. Really regret leaving the most over crowded over taxed state in the union? Good luck on living to see equity at your age buying in this way overpriced market. You probably have a mortgage.

I just sold my last ca. property last month.:lol::lol:

Desert hellhole? Thats where my renters live not me.:light:

What a pair you two who live in the least desireable parts of so. ca.

I never lived east of I5.

AKgringo - 11-5-2018 at 04:43 PM

So.....the pop-up ad under the Baja Nomad banner is for Maaco, asking me for a zip code to get an estimate. That's creepy!

Thanks for the couple of constructive comments and reference so far. If I ever think about getting my little SUV painted in Kansas, or SoCal, I will be sure to sound off here!

If Kansas is a chithole then SoCal is the sewer where it all ends up. You live in L.A. .... *urrp*.... :barf: which likens to a bowl of Granola. Them that ain't fruits and nuts is all FLAKES.

This posting is classic Baja Nomad. A question about car painting devolves into conservative ranting. I check in every once in awhile and am never surprised.

I hear there is going to be a big blue wave today, nov 6 (tsunami). I hope the nomad conservative blowhards know how to swim!

Arizona gonna have a democrat governor, texas going to elect a democrat senator, the duncan hunter name going down in prison stripes

AKgringo - 11-6-2018 at 08:57 AM

The car (remember the topic?) is purple! Is that a blend of values, or a compromise?

chuckie - 11-6-2018 at 09:25 AM

One of rigs I had painted was a Chevy Suburban...The painter asked what color I wanted...I told him to pick it....It came back a week later International Orange! I loved it...
