Minimum Wage Increase

Russ - 12-19-2018 at 11:06 PM

New minimum wage starts 1/1/19
BS = $177 and BCS = $103 The article says per day ? I'm confused!

Those values are pesos.
The min wage is not really a livable wage.

Russ - 12-19-2018 at 11:14 PM

Yes, the article clearly states that and a dollar conversion. But it also say " The wage will double to 176.72 pesos, or US $8.80, per day "

Russ - 12-20-2018 at 06:14 AM

What is confusing is that the workers here, Punta Chivato, are asking at least $80 pesos per Hour

Workers would be foolish to ask for minimum wage. The market determines labor rates.

Confusing also, is the map on that site, takes the "free" zone in Baja Norte, all the way to near, or at the state line with BCS...

Tough to comprehend why the people living in the "zona de la frontera norte" gets a higher raise in the minimum wage, and a reduction in the VAT, while the rest of the country gets a smaller wage increase and no VAT relief.
When that "zona", is among the most "wealthy" in all of Mexico.

How is it, that people living in the "zona" are any more deserving of a higher minimum wage increase, than the rest of the entire country"

BCS Governor Carlos Mendoza says>>>>

“[It’s] regrettable that BCS hasn’t been included in the free zone proposal like the rest of the [Baja California] peninsula. Not only will we not benefit from a lower IVA [value-added tax] and ISR [income tax], we won’t benefit from the minimum salary rise either. We demand reconsideration!”

Goat, when did you join the GOP party?

charliemanson - 12-20-2018 at 08:31 AM

One reason for higher min. wages in the north is the cost of living and goods. Keep in mind NOBODY works for min. wage here in BCS as do they in the states. Even the most basic laborer or legally hired cleaning person receives roughly 1500-2000 pesos a week. So as far as our 25+ employees the rise in min. wage means nothing and if that is what we offered we would not be able to find workers. Mandatory xmas bonuses, insurance and paid vacation hurt a bit however.

Plus, if we have a lazy worker or one who may steal, not follow instructions or is a danger to others, we can not fire them with out paying them a severance based on how long they have been employed. Sorry, last part off topic.

Bottom line is that the min. wage means nothing.

You keep crying about this issue, but AMLO explained it.

He wants to create a economic resurgence in the area. AMLO believes this will help Mexicans near the border stay in Mexico, instead of jumping the broken fence/wall that Mexico, will never pay for.

He also believes it will keep Mexican shoppers near the border, shopping on the Mexico side of the border, than going over to the US side, where a few things are actually cheaper in the US than Mexico.

The higher wages at the border, will also help Mexico compete with the maquiladoras that already pay above the minimum wage.

It makes sense to me, and has been done before with limited success.

Some of it sounds like it is right out of the GOP playbook, in attracting business to provide jobs, like NY did with Amazon, and all the corporate welfare, Amazon received for moving into the area. Although, AMLO is not giving away the farm like the GOP does with big business in the states.

There is also the fact, places like California, and NY, pay higher wages, than the rest of the country, because cost of higher cost of living in those areas and to remain competitive with other companies in the same market.

Even McDonald's, when bringing out a new product, tests markets the product in certain markets, before bringing it out to the rest of the country.

And you keep crying about the plight of poor people in MX and the defender of all the downtrodden and desperate peoples of the world....
And defend giving people in the "wealthy" zones a higher wage than the rest of the entire country...where there ARE more poor people.
Why do you not support giving poor people in the entire country an equal raise in the minimum wage?..

Drop a dime on AMLO and tell him to treat ALL people equally.
Which you lay claim to be the champion of.

Yes, workers are lucky to have a job. Why should they think they have a right to have more than a subsistence income. The gall to want a family, and the audacity to wish to provide for them.

Thanks for the Christmas cheer, Scrooge666. I'm sure your relatives look forward with joy to your presence at the Christmas dinner table. Bah, humbug!!!

Somehow I don't think you care about the poor people in the rest of Mexico, than you are trying to weakly bash AMLO, and his policies.

Maybe, AMLO believes in the trickle down theory, and he believes the higher wages near the border will trickle down to the rest of the country.

Like I said about McDonald's, test marketing, I'm willing to give AMLO a chance without criticizing him during his first weeks in office, although some of his polices are more inline with conservative police, than socialists policies that I rather see.

I also realize the cost of living is difference across the country like in the California, that will now pay up to $12 dollars an hour for minimum for companies with over 26 employees.

Sadly in Mississippi, where most white poor people vote GOP, and against their own interest, the minimum wage will remain at the federal rate of $7.25, because there is no minimum wage in the state, and they use the Federal rate. But hey, Mississippi, has a Senator, who would like to attend a public hanging.

So it's understandable that AMLO is rolling out his polices slowly and not all over Mexico, at the same time.

Ignorant statement right there. Gumshoe Jay "thinking" what's in someone's mind.

When I just got through championing the "poor" in the entire country.

Yes I will bash AMLO when he does not treat ALL people equally and divides up the wealth, based on where someone lives.

You, as the oft stated champion of ALL the poor, should tell AMLO to get on it.

JoeJustJoe - 12-20-2018 at 09:43 AM

DaliDali, I don't know if you notice this, but you usually have this authoritarian personality, where you usually demand, others to agree with you, where you are giving your opinions about some usually extreme right wing position.

At the end of your sentences, you ask for agreement, with sometime like, "do you agree," right," " are we in agreement?" etc etc.....

Now you keep telling me that I should write AMLO, and agree with your opinions, about his polices.

You are not a cop, DaliDali, you can't tell us how to think or what to do.

You write AMLO, if you disagree with him. I'm not doing it!

EVERYBODY !

One way or another.

And, feel good about feeling good.

BUT, any and all of the care expressed HERE won't affect the issue one whit.

Any time I see BillM, JJ and Goat in the same thread I know it's going to be a chit show..

sancho - 12-20-2018 at 03:34 PM

I like to have some idea what the Mex Nationals deal with
other than a case of Pacific is, yrs. back, was a bit on the
wage housekeepers get at the Cape. Their daily wage was
about the same as a Tourist hanging out at a resort paid
for a drink poolside. On top of that, they were hired on
a 90 day contract so the Hotels did not have to pay any
benefits

Cyberian - 12-20-2018 at 05:36 PM

All I know is that the top guy on a crew of 3-5 (depending on the day and who showed up...) unskilled laborers was paid 15 pesos an hour in BCS last spring/summer.

When I was exiled to Honolulu for a few months for work last year, I met housekeepers who worked two, sometimes three jobs, for more than minimum wage, and showered in the last room they cleaned before going "home" to a tent in a city park because it was all they could afford.

Minimum Skills = Minimum Wages

MrBillM - 12-20-2018 at 06:49 PM

Those who have to depend on the government setting a floor for their earnings clearly haven't got much going for themselves, but they fulfill a necessary niche in the labor market making it good practice to maintain a minimal sustenance-level wage.
