Fish names in Mexico

pauldavidmena - 1-3-2019 at 07:47 AM

I've noticed over the years that what I might call a Spanish Mackerel might be called something entirely different in Mexico. "Sierra"? "Dorado"? I'd probably eat it regardless, but it might be nice to know the equivalent in English. I found this article, but was hoping for something more specific to Mexico. Does anyone know of a list of Mexican game fish names and their English translations? Thanks in Advance.

Yellowfin croaker : Boca dulce, Roncador
Yellowtail : Jurel
Dolfinfish/ Mahimahi : Dorado
Shark : Tiburon
Kelp Bass : Cabrilla
Roosterfish : Pez gallo
Halibut : Lenguado
Red snapper : Huachinango
Black snook : Robalo
Triggerfish : Cochi
Puffer : Boleta

After the first three, I dug out Tom Miller's great 1979 'Angler's Guide to Baja California' for some more names of popular species.

As noted below with a link, Gene Kira's MexFish.com is excellent, having fish ID photos, and it is great that the site is still online!

Thanks DavidK! I remembered "Dorado" from George Bergin's fishing exploits. He would also catch "Sierra". Are those a type of mackerel?

Tom Miller has it as "Barrilete" (Black Skipjack. Euthynnus lineatus)

If the name is not known, it seems popular to simply call it a 'Pez blanco'!

Fishing out from L.A. Bay, off the top of my head... but it was sure a universal instead of "I don't know", reply... Maybe a few years ago now.

EDIT: Back in the day when sharks were not the desired fish to eat, they were called Whitefish at restaurants.
