here is a question for the experts - does the peak south-west of San Felipe have a name?
About 7 miles from town center
pretty high
must be significant
none of the maps I have show a name

Hi Harald, without looking at my maps (I am on my phone) I think I recall that mountain called Cerro Kino. I have seen snow on it even, amazing cold winter of '86, maybe?
When I am back in my Baja Room, I will look the maps over.

Your thread made me wonder what was the highest peak in Baja. Went down a rabbit hole and found this video. It's pretty damn good.

I think David nailed it AAA elevation 4290 ', GE elevation 4090'. Scanning GE that has to be the highest mountain.

great video thanks for sharing, ive spent some time camping up near the observatory there in San Pedro Martir and exploring those mountains, incredible area and so unique in baja with the big pines everywhere, had no idea the highest peak was hidden in there, but makes sense

i am here in Loreto and eyeballing the Gigante range here, just looked it up and the highest peak is ~3500ft, but from sea level that still looks pretty impressive!

The mountains just South of Loreto along the highway are some of the most spectacular in Baja. Always love the views there. Used one of them as the into shot in the first video in my sig.

just watched your beautiful video as well, i am on the hunt for hiking/offroad trails near Loreto

have any that you can suggest?

Cerro Kino is the site for a commercial radio repeater. Used for wireless security systems and radio coverage for local businesses. To get all the equipment up on top they had to make many trips from a spot where they parked the motorcycles. Solar panels, antennas, and radios are all there.

I love desolation. In Mexico, the world, the coastal plain is often crowded and polluted. The higher you go the less people/pollution. Above 9000 ft the air is thin. No smokers need apply. People thinner. Nature takes hold. The grip of the elements controls your day and night. The stars dominate the night sky. Storms dictate. Man is no longer master.

It's what others call a 'man cave' and just sounds better than an 'office'. All my Baja books, the PC, a couple wall maps... Yep, a Baja room.

If you have LB Maps on your computer, move the cursor to the area of N 29 35.682 W 114 29.722. It's just east of Hwy 1 between Santa Ines and Laguna Chapala. Zoom in the scale to 2 miles or less so the topo lines appear and roll over a topo line to check the elevation. LB Maps are known to be flawless so this 15,000' peak (the Almanac calls it Cerro Pedregoso) is obviously higher than Diablo, or Mt Whitney for that matter. Someone mentioned Ayn Rand is a post a few months ago. Do you suppose this peak is so high the top isn't visible and that's where Galt's Gulch is?

I listened to an interview once with a guy preparing to climb Everest. He had gained a bunch of weight because he said after 8000', your body metabolism changes and you burn a lot more calories. He had to pack on pounds to be able to even attempt the climb. Not sure how true that is or not, but I know I always drop weight after a trip to the Sierra.

Cerro Pedregoso elevation from various peak peakbagger sources 4641', 4723', 4788' 4741' and GE thinks it is 4475'

my GE shows 4661 ft
my LB maps shows 4660 ft
