Looking for road recommendations

MexicoTed - 1-23-2019 at 07:53 PM

Can anyone tell me about the road conditions or recommended routes for the these two stretches?

-Catavina to Lopez Mateos but along the Pacific side

-San Jose del Cabo to Cabo Pulmo along the coastal road

Thanks in advance. Hope to see some of you along the way.

I can't speak to the cabo area as I'm not that familiar with it.

Catavina to Lopez Mateos is pretty straight forward at the beginning to Guerrero Negro after that you have options.

Catavina take the dirt road to the ocean at KM168. At the ocean follow the dirt road south along the coast past Santa Rosalillita until it turns east to Hwy 1 at KM62/63 north of the military check point. Hwy 1 to Guerrero Negro and on to Vizcaino. Now you have options.

Continue on Hwy 1 to San Ignacio, the fastest way or if you want to stay close to the ocean go west to the Bahia Asuncion. From Bahia Asuncion you can follow the coast line down to Punta Abreojos and the hwy back to Hwy 1 and to San Ignacio.

From San Ignacio take the Laguna hwy to the Laguna where you have a choice of either the salt flats closer to the coast and passes El Datil or the so called high road that passes Rancho El Cuarenta. They both join up north of San Juanico. From San Juanico it's a paved hwy Las Barrancas and out to Hwy 53. Hwy 53 south to the Lopez Mateos turn off just north of CD Insurgentes.

If time was of concern I would take the hwy directly to San Ignacio and bypass Bahia Asuncion. But if time is of no concern take the longer route and enjoy.

In SJC, stay to the right like you're headed to the Cabo golf course, cross the estuary, at about the 7km marker, go right to the water and then North to Pulmo. Washboard, dusty, nothing going on.

Hi Lee, any idea on how much time it takes?

Those cabo pulmo road conditions change fast. I once drove out there just after it had been graded and it was pretty nice. The soft roads washboard back up in a week or less though.

60 km but figure couple hours. W/o 4 wheel drive avoid the sand.
