I think I'll take a walk...

 Pages:  1    3

fishbuck - 4-30-2019 at 09:01 AM

...across the border.
What do you think about that?
Either Otay or San Y.
Which is best for walking across?

Also, I will rent a car in Tijuana.
What do you think of that move?

If I ride the train down it will be San Ysidro... I've done that a few times.
Seems scary but isn't... during the daytime.

The reason is that I am not ready to drive my truck down yet. And need to return in a week or 2 for hernia surgery and probably at Scripps.
I can't be rugged and tuff until that is done.
And summer is coming...

But I will officially begin living in Baja for the rest of my life next Saturday and need to get the keys...:D

The journey begins...

sancho - 4-30-2019 at 09:37 AM

I'm at that point, but the wife doesn't quite share the
interest I have, going to have a test run for a few months.
Taking Amtrak to San Diego, SD trolley to border San
Ysidro, walk across. No info on rental car within Mex,
apparently there is a Ca. rental that allows their cars
into Mex, cabaja.com or something similar. If you
can get by without a vehicle you could take the bus
to SQ from just inside TJ at the border

fishbuck - 4-30-2019 at 10:09 AM

My preliminary research indicates several car rentals within walking distance to San Y gate.
$130/week includes extra insurance. Tiny car. Good for the hiway.
Limited dirt road capability.
I'm traveling light. My new place isn't fully furnished yet so may only stay a night or 2 until tv is on. I need Star Trek. And Fishing shows. And motocross, and Game of Thrones... but that's all I need.
I suppose a brief tour is in order.
Maybe a night at Baja Cactus and Catavina might be necessary for a proper re-intro to baja. I never stay on Santa Maria beach at the big hotel or at Cielito Lindo...
Been over 2 years since I have been able to make tracks in Baja.
A hard couple of years...:(
But that is over... mostly...;)

With the right attitude, it is a very friendly town. Even hustlers are human and enjoy a smile and a non-combative conversation.

True that. For the most part the entire experience is good...
Even that time the pretty lady... fondled... me on the street.
It wasn't until later when after I ordered a beer that l realized that when she was grabbing my...equipment... that she also slipped my $20 beer money out off my pocket...
And it was almost worth $20... almost...
$20 buys alot of... beer... in TJ.

Food at 'Parcela 12', Km. 16+ (on the left) is quite the rave with everyone who has stopped there. It is just past the El Pabellon RV park entrance road.

In El Rosario, the El Faro (near Km. 59, on the left), was good for all three meals of the day. La Pasadita is across the highway also popular. The crab soup at Mama Espinoza's (Km. 57+) was great a couple of months ago, too.

I wasn't mad. But I did get kicked out of the bar for having no money after them opening me one of their finest, coldest beers...

So yeah... moral of the story is... don't let any pretty ladies overwelm you by dazzling you with their large round moist... eyes...
Don't let them touch your... stuff out on the street!

Exactly!
While I was very privileged to cover so much ground collecting road data for the Baja Bound guide, I was on a schedule to cover as much as humanly possible and could not stop and see everything. Every dirt road in Baja goes somewhere... somewhere interesting!

Neal Johns used to say here, "if you come to a fork in the road and don't take it, God will get you!"

If I had unlimited time in Baja, I would go down every dirt road, note the kilometer at the turnoff, note the mileage of the road, photograph where it ended.

So many roads... so little time!

BajaBlanca - 4-30-2019 at 11:56 AM

I recommend using the ped west crossing both going south and coming back if you walk. Much easier on the feet. There are taxis waiting on both sides and Uber can be called as well.

Have fun in Baja!

I loved that shirt!

fishbuck - 5-2-2019 at 11:28 AM

Ok.
Slight adjustment.
I think I will coast my monster truck to san diego and park it at San Ysidro and walk across to get my rental car.
Not ready for the train ride yet. I've done and it's ok... kinda fun.
But I want my truck ready cause I need to come back a little quicker than I thought.

David K - 5-2-2019 at 11:31 AM

Get your annual insurance policy with Baja Bound and drive down. Crime in San Diego too high!

John Harper - 5-2-2019 at 11:33 AM

If you're driving your truck that far, why not just take it all the way into Mexico? Why spend the extra money for a rental car and insurance? Just go with an annual policy on your truck and you're good for a trip anytime.

John

[Edited on 5-2-2019 by John Harper]

fishbuck - 5-2-2019 at 11:36 AM

The big question (as a result of a big foul-up).

I recently noticed the registration on my truck is expired. I guess the notice never caught up with me.

Can I get Baja insurace with expired registration? Would it be valid?

What could go wrong if I drive it down there with expired registration?
What happens when I try to cross back into the US?

I still have Washington registration and I'm not registering it in California.
Maybe S. Dakota. But I'm still working on that.

Walking across and renting a car seems better...

[Edited on 5-2-2019 by fishbuck]

John Harper - 5-2-2019 at 11:38 AM

What if you park it in San Ysidro? With expired tags, it's tow bait.

John

fishbuck - 5-2-2019 at 11:43 AM

And I'm not sure I can stand waiting at the border for 2-3 hours ever again in a vehicle.
I almost bought a Jeep for the trip but it had a stick and I remembered that border torture. So am waiting for and automatic.
That is the nature of all my scheming to avoid that by either walking or flying across.
And I still think if I fly up I will park the plane at TJ and walk across so I don't hassle with plane paper work.
But ideally I get finished up with the US and stay in Baja.

fishbuck - 5-2-2019 at 11:45 AM

In a private parking lot?
I have gotten tickets for it at Lax longterm parking. But that is City owned so the parking cops cruise it.

I have no idea where you planned to park. Good luck!

Be careful driving around with expired tags. I know Carlsbad has some kind of license plate readers installed, not sure how they react.

John

[Edited on 5-2-2019 by John Harper]

fishbuck - 5-2-2019 at 12:03 PM

There are several private lots right near the walk across.
And yes, I would rather leave it parked.
I may still take the train instead of sneaking down there.
Trying to shave minutes off the trip.
But Uber/Train won't add more than an hour to it. And the piece of mind knowing my truck is safe might be worth it.
And a nice train ride down the beach too!

fishbuck - 5-2-2019 at 12:51 PM

And then there is that 9-10mpg thing. Very wasteful to drive an unloaded truck like that.
I barely drive now so the 5-10 miles a week is about a gallon.
Funny is that it doesn't burn much more under full load.
A cheap rental car pays for itself in fuel savings and is a whole lot easier to drive.
My truck takes 2 hands at all times. And very good energy management skills if you want to stay out of the ditch or avoid an accidental crushing of small cars...

sancho - 5-2-2019 at 02:09 PM

Pesca, Some of the near border parking lots at San Ysidro
have gone up in price. Was by the Baja Insurance kiosk
at the foot of the Outlet of the Americas a couple weeks
back, $30 for one day, this was on a Sat., don't know the price mid week nor
the price of the larger lots, one is on the west side of Hwy 5,
adjacent to the last offramp before you enter TJ
or the other one on the east of 5, I believe it's by the Jack
in the Box

fishbuck - 5-2-2019 at 02:20 PM

Thanks.
I scared myself out of driving my truck.
But plan to get this method dialed in...
Both at San Ysidro and Otay.
Walking across is where it's at.

David K - 5-2-2019 at 06:39 PM

I am not getting the complications you are having Mike?
If it is registered in Washington, that is fine... Heck, they even let Canadians drive into Baja!

mtgoat666 - 5-2-2019 at 07:42 PM

Fishead,
Why aren’t you flying that go-fast airplane you are always talking about? You can’t drive your car?

Stop planning. Just do it!

I plan the heck out of going SOB, something about getting
old/older. Wasn't always that way, back in the day, no
Mex Insurance, clearing Ensenada, a beer between my legs
until reaching the old Cardon RV Park La Paz. Wonder how
many younger BN's do the same, was lucky not to have
any negative incidents. Now I'm very
detailed, cautious, too much analysis I suppose, trying
to eliminate the things that might jump up and bite. Especially for a semi perm move of yrs.

This is taking my normal military style assault planning.
And I didn't have all the details until today.
Some final packing and a good breakfest and I will Uber to the Irvine Amtrak station.
I would love to have my rollie cart full of stuff onboard a southbound train and be watching the scenery go by at about noonish.
So stay tuned for a whirlwind tour. Ensenada Friday night... always fun.
Is Cinco De Mayo celebrated the Ensenada? I would think it was invented there... at Hunsong's probably...

I need to be back here (Costa Mesa) for an appointment on the 9th latest. So train ride home.
Don't need the truck yet. Best not to risk the expired regestration. Safe at home better. And a 10 minute walk across on the way home versus 2+ hours to bring truck home.
No plane set up for the trip yet... working it...
But I'm riding the train for you...;)

Yes, The Orange Curtain is still holding in.
The county hasn't squeezed all the money out of me yet.
But that should happen at about noon. And then I will probably be escorted out of town...
To the Greyhound station.

Long day ahead...

I'm made Ensenada.
Rental car was iffy but I pulled it off.
The darn thing has had 2 flats already. From the potholes.
Second and last was in front of Hotel Vaquero.
$250 peso 10pm-10am.
Smells a little but clean enough.
Up early to get the tires fixed.

Ensenada was very quiet. Spooky quiet for a friday night.

I am surprised you made it past TJ!
I thought for sure you would get distracted by strip clubs in TJ, and end up drunk, and getting robbed at 4 AM on some TJ street.

Hmmm, somehow I have managed to drive across Ensenada probably once or twice a day for the last six years with only one flat tire. And that one was my fault for not paying attention.

I read he was in San Quintin? Human trafficking? Where is that mentioned?

Thanks Paco.
I patroled my beach, my lots. Moved a rock or two.
I'm exhausted.
I am laying on a nice couch on the living room of my rental. Fully furnished.
New solar, water heater, and septic...
It is beyond quiet here...
Although I did here a little umpah/mariachi from the Old Mill last night...
Went to the Calimex yesterday, small but functional.
I can see I may need to bring favorites for the US but they have the basics.
There are a few mom and pop groceries here. Larger ones the were here before the Calimex.
Had tacos at Taco Paty last night. Good enough.
The only sports at the bars was boxing. I think one of the fighters was Mexican. I didn't stay. They like the tv a little louder than I do.

I can tell you that dreaming about this can not do it justice.... it's way better than you can imagine:cool:

I haven't visited the clubs or "dated" any of the ladies for many years now.
But they seem to be thriving just fine without me. I guess they just keep the places open hoping I will come back with pockets full of money... like I used to do;)

OK Mike, I was just trying to figure out what Ged was talking about... I guess my Canadian is a bit rusty, eh?

fishbuck - 5-5-2019 at 02:23 PM

I know. Jed is still trying bait me for some reason...
Must be a Canadian thing that I wouldn't ( and don't want to) understand.
But the Gentlemen's club looks nice and maybe classy.
I will need to peek in there eventually.

There once was a man from Nantucket
Who carried his fish in a fishbucket

pacificobob - 5-5-2019 at 03:14 PM

it occurs to me that the last several times i have heard/read the word "classy" it was in reference to a brothel, escort service or strip club.

fishbuck - 5-5-2019 at 04:25 PM

He pulled up a mermaid and said ........

I really wish we could all get together at the Pyramid for another book signing.
That was a fun day Bob.

There once was a man from Nantucket
Who on the forum called himself Fishbucket
Fishy said he could fly but the Nomads knew he was high
So he went to San Quintin and said f#%k it!

motoged - 5-5-2019 at 04:51 PM

David,
FF's bragging about seeking prostitution is the human trafficking I am referring to....or have you only read the redacted copy ?

Another one (notice the San Quintin theme)

There once was a man from Nantucket
Who carried his fish in a fishbucket
The bucket was small
Held little at all
If he wanted an oyster he`d shuck it!!
