Not Exactly A Vacation

The China Fleet Club. Wondering if any Navy vets here including Canadian, Australian, or British remember this place around 1959/60. We anchored out in the bay and were boated to the docks. Liberty only on Victoria Island and not allowed in Kowloon.

We stood at GQ with our guns swung towards China while steaming through the channel. Just to show off I think.

Hong Kong today is unrecognizable from those days. I don't see how 60 years can go so quickly.

Do you remember the "floating restaurant" also "Pinky's Tattoo ?

I was there in 1972 and was able to go to the Kowloon side and see the Red China boarder...

Had the best fish and chips at the 747 restaurant (real England style)
Ate ox tail soup for the first time, saw Soylent green at a theater...

To our complete disappointment, We didn't find any lady's of the night at that port....

Although we always were able to find a good time somehow...

I enjoy reading about places written by people who were there. I visited Hong Kong in 1970 with my father so reading what you saw ten years earlier is interesting to me.

Many Ladies of the Night when I was there....um...or so I heard.;)

The Club was demolished in the early 80's. I found the location a few years ago. Now a very large office building.

My brother served on the Henry B Wilson DDG 7 during the war.

We ate at one of the floating restaurants in Aberdeen Bay. You got to point to the fish in tanks that you wanted to eat and that is what they cooked for you. There were two such restaurants in 1970. A lady (with a baby wrapped on her back) would row you to the restaurant from the dock.

That looks like it. And yes you had to cross a few stacked boats to get to a boat that took you to the restaurant.

It was the first time I dinned at a true Chinese style restaurant with a large round revolving top so as shear all the dishes ....

Marc, looks like we were all on souped up tin cans...
Ever go through a Typhoon ?
I did near Guam.... That was fun :o

I remember one Typhoon in particular. We took on while at sea from a Carrier a small team of Frogmen (UDT this was before SEALs). We were to find and bring on board a space capsule. On our way we were hit by a typhoon. We considered ourselves old salts who never got seasick. Well EVERYONE ON BOARD GOT SICK. The bridge watch said we took a 22 degree roll at one point. A main transmitter in the radio shack almost came loose. Two of us had to hold it in place. Our captain just plowed into it. We were taking green water over Weapon A on the O1 level.
Only us Blue Water Sailors would know about this stuff.

The floating restaurant is alive and well in Hong Kong. Was there last year. Now you take a free motorized boat out to the restaurant. We ordered "Drunken Shrimp" and the waiter brought out live shrimp and put them in some type of flaming hot oils and they were delicious.

USS Arnold J Isbell, DD 869 in 1968-'69 Gunline and plane guard off Viet Nam. Two Typhoons and Hong Kong was a Blast. Bought my Sansui Speakers there. Got the other components in other ports as we got our combat pay.
