Got a new drone and took it for a test drive on Saturday

JZ - 6-23-2019 at 03:36 AM

Shot this in about 30 mins, give or take. Nothing Earth shattering, but these new drones make things super easy.

Gonna take a bunch of shots in Baja next week.

Wow, you are the Drone Meister! Amazing what they can do today.

I can see where drones are going to be useful for lots of public safety activities. Fires, SAR, etc.

which one did you buy and why is it good?

Bajazly - 6-23-2019 at 07:54 AM

What did you do with the old one? I kind of want one and if I could get in the game under full blown retail I probably would.

Really nice!

VERY nice, looking forward to what you shoot in Baja.

I got the Mavic 2 Zoom.

Big things that are better:

- it has collision avoid sensors on the front, sides, back, and the bottom; this is a game changer, before other drones only had it on the front/bottom; but a lot of your best shots come from flying backwards or sideways; it will automatically stop before hitting something

- it has something called Tap Fly. Meaning your can tap on an object on the screen and it will automatically fly there w/o you having to do anything. The peak that I circled around in the video was about a mile away from me. I tapped on it on my phone and it just flew there. It automatically increases or decreases height flying to the target. But the best part is you can rotate the drone and it still keeps flying in the original direction. This allows for some really spectacular shots as you fly past an object and rotate back at it. In a nut shell, you don't need to worry about the flying, and can focus on the shots/camera.

- there is a built in hyper-lapse mode

- it has advanced Active Track - which is the automatic tracking of moving objects (cars, boats, ppl, etc.), you just draw a box around what you want it to track

- flies up to 45 mph and flights can be up to 31 mins.

- You can fly it up to 5 miles away and still get an HD video stream back; this is double what it was before. Not that you would fly it that far away, but even when flying a half mile away, you get a much more consistent connection from the remote to the drone. Allowing you to sit in obstructed areas (e.g. your car, etc.) to stay out of the glare of the sun

- the Zoom version has a 2x optical zoom, the Mavic Pro 2 is the same, but has a better camera, especially for photography, but doesn't have the zoom, otherwise they are the exact same.

I typically sell them on craigslists. There are tons of DJI drones on there.

I actually got this one on CL. It was brand new, in an unopened box. Got it for $850.

What's the current situation regarding restrictions/regulations/licensing with drones in the US? Thought you could not fly out of sight.

99% of droners are teenage boys and perverts, neither is known to follow regulations.

Nice stuff. I've wanted one for a while but don't want another hobby! I'm going to thru hike the PCT in the next couple of years and really would like a drone to pack with me,I'm thinking this is on the large side!? Very nice video...

It weighs about 2 pounds without the battery, and another 1-2 pounds with the battery. It folds up to be pretty small.

DJI makes 2 smaller drones as well.

So what do you think of the idea that DJI internet capable drones can send data back to the Chinese Government. All those images along with accurate location data could be put together and give them a great detailed view of the entire US.

What do I think? I think we should get that trash out of my thread before some political whack-a-do wanders in here. As this comment in the alert makes your post of zero relevance to this thread.

"Organizations that conduct operations impacting national security or the Nation's critical functions must remain especially vigilant as they are at greater risk of espionage and theft of proprietary information," the alert states.

If the Chinese were really interested it would be much easier and faster to fly a camera equipped private aircraft around to photograph whatever they wanted. Many of these for hire around the country. Or they could simply use one of their surveillance satellites.
