Bring personal things across border

Greetings,
So, I got myself situated with Dakota Post in SD and will be arriving in San Felipe, hopefully by mid week. I am wondering about my household things and bringing them across the border. Moving truck will be on el Centri in 3 weeks with one carton of my belongings. My question is this: Is there someone I can hire to bring my things across? I have a good hitch but am afraid to drive with a trailer. Also, do I have to declare anything? It is all household stuff. Nothing new.

Are you looking for someone to drive your vehicle? What kind of trailer, house or cargo? How big is your "carton" of stuff? I'm having a difficult time envisioning what you're talking about.

Eduardo at San Felipe storage imports household stuff all the time. He has trucking down here, he has arranged to get my container from calexico to SF once it gets down south and I talked to another couple who he had picked up their stuff in Sonora California.

Where in SF are you going to be? Or is this just a stopping point to head further south?

I have a trailer hitch if someone preferred to use my car but it really does not matter whose vehicle it is.
I just want my stuff in SF. The size is one moving carton but the carton is not coming with me. It belongs to a moving company.

Also, do I have to declare anything? The things I am bringing over are household stuff and nothing is new. Mostly clothes, tools, kitchen things.

I am surprised someone hasn't offered the answer. There used to be a deal that with your residence visa, you got one non-taxed move of your household goods... The legal 'resident' Nomads (not FMM holders) should be able to tell you.

It's more complicated than just simply hauling stuff across the border. Like the US, Mexico has a customs organization (Aduanas) that regulates the entry of goods into Mexico.

Call these people, they can either help or point you in the right direction.

I think your best bet is to talk to people in San Felipe who have recently made the move and learn from them.

The way it was explained to me, and my buddy went thru this a few months ago, is you need a list of EVERY item in the shipment and nothing can be new and apparently they want serial numbers for anything with a serial number. For example, if you have a new mouse for your computer, take it out of the box and record the serial number. It is out of the box so now it is not new anymore. YMMV

And yes you do get the one time exemption but you need to go thru all the paperwork for importing.

The process of importing household goods goes hand-in-hand with obtaining temporary resident status. You will need to visit a mexican consular office to begin the process. Once you have legalized your residency status, the Consulate will provide you with the instructions for preparing the importation document ("Menaje de Casa"). You will need to contract with a moving company that handles cross-border importation of your goods.

Note: this info is from the Boston consulate, but was the only one I could find with an English translation. I went through the consular office in San Diego and can verify that the process was the same...

Do you have RT or Rp? If you do, then you either fill a proper customs formr for tax exempt and make a detailed list, or just make a detailed list. If you don't have a status, you can still make a list, and they will either tax you or not.

You start the paperwork drill at a Mexican Consulate in the US. Suggest you try Calexico or Yuma, they seem to be (more) people friendly

What visa do you have that is not a temporary residence? Like people said, you need RT/RP visa in order to move a lot of stuff free of charge, either personally or through shipper (again, this is a one-time deal).

What SF - San Felipe or San Francisco? Most Mex consulates in the US take RT/RP applications, don't know about S'Fran. Getting RT/RP visa takes time and some preparations, you can't just go there and walk out with visa in hand.

There obviously can't be a Mex consulate in San Felipe.

From another post simultaneous with this one, it sounds like he/she is in San Feipe right now. Not in the US. What visa, what "temporary at SF consulate" (and what SF) - hard to tell. Let's hope the fog will clear out in the morning.
