Buying US car insurance before visiting the states

Apparently there is a place in San Felipe to buy US car insurance for the time you will be visiting the states.

Does anybody know the name of the company?

Mexpro.com sells short term insurance for MX plated vehicles visiting the U.S.

I’ll ask around and see what I can find. I’m going into town tonight and I remember seeing an insurance place near a taco stand I go to, I’ll see if it says anything about US policies.

You might call America’s Mailbox in SD too, they have a line when you call, push #2 I think, that deals with insurance but i don’t know if they do the short term thing or not.

I live in Mexico with vehicles licensed in South Dakota. I only maintain U S insurance when I'm in Amerika, which averages a couple of weeks a year. (This is fine with South Dakota). I use Progressive when I go north. Buy a six month policy with whatever coverage you want, arrange for monthly payments (costs maybe $40 U S per month). Then, when you return to Mexico cancel the policy and Progressive will prorate the term and rebate all except for the time in the States. You can get the policy online, print it out and be good to go in ten minutes.

I'm looking into storing a vehicle in Baja and was planning on learning more about getting South Dakota plates. Do you suggest maintaining full-time MX insurance when the vehicle is stored or just pulling a trip policy through a service like BajaBound when flying down to use the vehicle?

The week long policies are pricey. If you are doing multiple trips down a year it's much better to go with a one year policy.

Get adequate liability coverage.

My vehicles are low value, so my US policy is liability only. For my Mexico adventures, I buy an annual "driver's license" policy through BajaBound.

With that policy I m covered driving any of my old rigs, or someone else's (except for motorcycles or motorhomes). You can add others to the policy as well.

South Dakota only requires that you maintain insurance while the vehicle is in South Dakota, so your registration would not be in jeopardy if the vehicle is uninsured while stored in Baja. You would need to find another trip policy provider, however. BajaBound requires that any vehicle they insure in Mexico is also insured in the U S.

if the san felipe deal doesn't pan out i've bought short term u.s. ins from both Bernies and MyBaja both in rosarito....give em a call.
