Coco's Relocating

matthew_mangus - 11-3-2019 at 05:56 PM

I heard through the grapevine from a moto buddy that Coco is relocating to a new location closer to the new highway. Does anybody here have details on where he is moving to?

David K - 11-3-2019 at 06:01 PM

Interesting... When I brought up the lack of traffic once the new route was open, Coco said he welcomed the peace and quiet as he did not like all the semi-trucks.

Wednesday, coming up

John M - 11-3-2019 at 08:06 PM

We'll be going past Coco's mid morning on Wednesday and get the latest.

Please note the Kilometer marker or how far past a marker where the old road to Coco's leaves the new hwy. Thank you!

A little sad news in Baja. Coco's has to relocate 8km away on the highway. He is taking down all the memorabilia and will rebuild. With the new highway no one stops by anymore... at 80 something...not easy .

How is stumpy going to move all that carnival of chit to a new location?
Stumpy needs to get busy and fleece a few more off-roaders to pay for the move.
One of you fools going to start a gofundme for stumpy?

KasloKid - 11-3-2019 at 11:50 PM

Not cool to call a double amputee "stumpy".
How would you feel if you lost an eye and your critics called you "Cyclops".....
It's a technique bullies use all the time, to hurl insulting nicknames at their victim.

Call me anything you want, just don’t call me late for dinner!

Actually, I admire stumpy for his great ability to fleece off-roaders, lightening them of their pocket money and stained panties. More power to him. Did you start up a collection for stumpy?

David K - 11-4-2019 at 06:02 AM

I guess this is Goat's idea of "Making America Decent Again?"

"Deplorable" seems to cover both sides of the spectrum.

Coco is a squatter. He will do the same next to the hwy. No big deal.

thebajarunner - 11-4-2019 at 08:47 AM

Coco is harmless.
Always happy to hand him a buck for a cold Pacifico
(even though we have a cooler full of them in the truck)
He is an icon

He is our modern version of the old guy who used to "fix" the road over the "Sisters" Every time he saw a cloud of dust approaching he would jump up and push his shovel around. And we always gave him change. Just part of "The Real Baja"

And the one who calls names has never been there, never met the man
Typical trash from the "Keyboard Kowboy"

Same here, as he is an icon of local history and entertainment. I am not sure he will do so well by moving to the highway... People who zoom by on pavement are not the same as those on a dirt road ("Bad roads bring good people").

Below, is a photo from the 1960s from an old book of a fellow who maintained the road south of Puertecitos, working only for donations. We drove by the wheel barrel a couple of times and never saw him...

Bad roads, and good roadds...bring all kinds of people. Remember when Coco help the guys jeep (roll over accident) hostage for mordida?

Maybe the pavement will present a few more opportunities.

dravnx - 11-4-2019 at 01:55 PM

I've been through Coco's Corner 6-8X and I swear, he's had a different story every time about someone taking money from him.

David K - 11-4-2019 at 02:19 PM

Coco is all about storytelling...

In 2012, we stopped to visit and a couple in a Jeep wanted to go to the Calamajué mission then south to Hwy. 1.

Coco told them the water in the arroyo was too deep and he couldn't be responsible for them. I had just read a trip report on Nomad (from Baja Tripper) who just went through there... said the water was the lowest he had ever seen. I was going that way, no matter what was reported... and I told the couple in the Jeep they could travel with us.

We saw the mission site then had an easy drive in the canyon, Baja Tripper was right, not much water at all. This was in July 2012.

I returned in 2016, and the water level was still very low, and it was in September.

Here's a few photos from 2012...

Coco gets a hug from Baja Angel.

The edge of Arroyo Calamajué at the gold mill ruins.

The mission church (adobe wall outline), across the arroyo from the gold mill.

The deepest water in the canyon!

The couple in the Jeep were so happy we came along so they could enjoy this route!

I'm from Coronado and very old. I joined this forum just to observe, I guess I should have kept my mouth shut. What I said is factual, Just ask Tom Carlin or Desh. This is really silly, I know more about Mexico than 75% of you guys combined. ADIOS motherflockers.

Well, tell us some Coco stories, then. Could they possibly be better than the ones we have read here? :O

I agree. If you're that easily offended by a one word comment made by a pretty amiable member of the forum, then it's probably your mistake by not remaining a lurker. Forums are a place for free speech, with few limits. Thin skin may be hazardous.

Take up bird watching, that's where you can really use your powers of observation.

LOL--------I too am from Coronado, very old, and have known "Desh" and "Tom Carlin" (and Vince) since the '50's. I believe you, but I bet I can match your knowledge of Baja! LOL This forum can be a little rough, but there are nuggets of wisdom from time to time. Don't leave??? Of course I am very curious about who you are.

Someone please tell us about the BumBum Club. Where was it? When did it close? What kind of club was it? Does anyone have any pictures?

Your name dropping did not work — those names mean nothing to me!

Your CV is incomplete, please address following deficiencies:

Do you own a toyota tacoma? If you dont have a toyota tacoma, please justify your vehicle choice (and dis the tacoma while doing so)

Have you posted pics of your dog?

What air pressure do you run your tires off pavement?

KasloKid - 11-4-2019 at 10:39 PM

Thanks David for the Facebook link correction.

I think it's pitiful that some who have plenty (relatively speaking) come down hard on a guy that makes his living by whatever means is available to him There is no welfare system (as far as I know) in Mexico to financially support those who are unable to work due to age or illness.

Not a big deal in my mind to watch and listen to him spin a yarn, whether it be "someone stole money from me" or wrong advice on a particular section of road. I have found him to be a Baja icon and take his stories with a grain of salt. I've also dropped stuff off for him and his cats, started a conversation here of him needing batteries for his solar system which proved productive, dropped $20 or more for a coke or a beer every time I'm/we're through there.

Moving out to the new highway will be a challenge for this old guy... expect more stories of his stuff being ripped off, and I'll bet the majority of the stories will be true.

I'm not one to give money to the vagrants standing on the corner, begging for gas money or food money...... they look capable of picking up a shovel and working for an honest days pay,..... but Coco has struck a cord in my heart. His demeanour and stories are his way of finding a way to put food on his table, which doesn't hurt anyone. He isn't a blood sucking leech in our society. I'll continue to stop in, say Hi, listen to his stories and leave a generous contribution to help him out.

When it's time for him to make the final move in years to come, I'll certainly miss the old fart.

David K - 11-5-2019 at 07:48 AM

I am guessing he is 81 or 82 this year? I am really surprised he is moving. When John M, TMW, ElComandanteLoco (the gang) get back, we will have the details!

And it seems odd to complain about a 20p cold beer after 3 hours of hot dust when 5p for 3 sheets of toilet paper is common on the mainland

The photo above is an indication of someone who really has their head screwed on right. Along with all the ladies who donated.

Paco Facullo - 11-5-2019 at 04:24 PM

"Cocos Corner Truck Fund"

Coco has said the new truck that was given to him on the first Go-fund-me is a gas guzzler and he could not afford the gas.

I would thing the simpler solution (rather than another new truck) would be a go-fund-me for a gas ONLY credit card.......

MUCH less money and it solves the problem..

I see the only $670 has been raised and $5,000 is what is wanted.
And it's been going since July 1st.

NOT vary good. I think must people that donated for the first truck are done with it, I know I am...

But I may donate for a GAS fund...

Moving or not moving

John M - 11-13-2019 at 09:44 PM

When we talked with Coco on Nov 7 he said he still hasn't decided whether to move or not. If he moves it may be along the new roadway around Km 179 (in the area of Las Arrastras) where an acquaintance of his has offered a place for him to set up.

Nothing certain.
