Great way to start my day today. Must have been so fun for you as a young kid, as well as an adventure for your folks.
Love your old trip reports.

My friend, that sure brings back memories
My first time through the Gonzaga "Sisters" route was pre-running for the 1972 500. We scrubbed a set of new tires down to the cords on that short stretch.
Couple years later was my first time at LABay having Papa Diaz' turtle steak. I remember sitting down at the big table after we arrived on our pre-run, getting dark outside, in walks the local priest, sits down beside us and asks "what's on the memu" and "Turtle Steak!" was the answer.
There is a part of me that sure would like to return to those old times and places.....

sd: It was! Thank you.

thebajarunner: While I don't remember if I ate any (I kind of think not as my parents were not into "exotic" food), I wish I had or if I did, remember it. That was a time when the turtles were so numerous it was once said 'you could walk across the Gulf of California, on their backs, and never get your feet wet'!

Just wanted to say thank you for the feedback on this article I have received via email. It sometimes is a surprise to me what people like to read the most about!
That my mom was so independent seems to impress many... She always was taking photos of me and my dad, I don't know if I have many of her and I, as my dad didn't take many photos... He just drove his Jeep and fished the sea!

When Hwy. 1 was under construction (summer of 1973). Here is the viewpoint south of Laguna Chapala:

Here is one I took of my mom, on top of Mission San Javier, in 1976 (I was 18):

One more of my mom from 1976, at the El Mármol cemetery, with my girlfriend:

Anyway, thanks for the emails and I am glad a few of you like my articles!
