PANTYHOSE - Great for a temporary fixes on fan belts and I’ve heard alternators.

My fan belt broke coming back form Las Vegas about two years ago. This nice guy stopped and helped me. So flabbergasted, I didn’t ask him how he knew it would work. Better yet, why he had them. Hey, it’s California.

How about one little deck of cards.

After a great day of fun in the sun you can play strip poker .... or
if things aren't going so well, solitaire!

Gadget - 4-16-2008 at 01:10 PM

Good list. My list has other things specific to my needs and vehicle, but this looks like a great one in general.

This is a long thread so I may have missed it: Baby wipes

"A clean butt is a happy butt", our red neck, North Carolina, friend Tom says. You add the good old boy acsent and it's funny every time.

Baja12valve - 4-28-2008 at 08:33 PM

I bring a bunch of soccer balls, shoes, and frisbees to pass out to the kids. In some of the small towns (or smaller) what the kids play with is really sad. I give the ball to the smallest kid, hopefully ensuring him a spot on the field.
Too cheap to buy a good compressor, so a scuba tank does tire and impact tool duty when required.
Three different kinds of epoxy. That stuff has saved my life.
Lacquer thinner to clean parts
Plastic containers to carry out ALL of my trash, or at least what I can't burn.

ckiefer - 5-14-2008 at 10:15 PM

And maybe a small u-haul trailer to carry all of the above!:P

vandenberg - 6-27-2008 at 08:54 AM

How about a set of bocce balls. Fun to play on the beach in soft sand. Have to toss them instead of rolling:saint::saint:

Curt63 - 7-9-2009 at 07:28 AM

What about empty Gatorade bottles?

Am I the only guy that hates to get out bed in the middle of the night?

vandy - 7-20-2009 at 08:58 PM

Good one, Curt, but we can find those everywhere...uh, sometimes filled with yellow liquid.

How about starting fluid (ether)?
I use it to mount tires that have fallen off the rim (and spare tires off the rim).
I use it when the vehicle won't start, to rule out fuel problems.
Also a great cleaner of delicate electronics, like your mass air flow sensor, which can get gummed up.

Not to mention great night-time pyrotechnics with a lighter...

Here is a rough list of vacation to-bring items based on my own ideas as well as others. It is by no means complete. It does not include specialty items such as all we need for dirt biking. Note to Self...

Add to list:

1. Salsa CD's

2. Plastic sheet with Arthur Murray salsa step footprints and instruction manual (must learn that little double step that looks so cool)

3. A larger vehicle to hold all of these things that a person must have to get by in Baja.

DeMinimis - 2-25-2010 at 10:56 AM

Either I missed it or I can't believe someone didn't mention this in the past 8 pages. I'll give you a hint: Pretty much every Baja racer (four-wheeled) carries them. They've saved us several times (Used to attach a coil on our old buggy after it broke free so we could get home. Used to get throttle linkage back to the correct location when it slipped a couple of years back on our current buggy (throttle stuck wide open and its not even Toyota-based). Used to keep our hi-Lift jack from rattling. Secure a license plate when the screw fails. Great for binding unruly kids, etc...).

DK, I suspect you know where this is going. ZIP TIES! Bags and bags of zip ties (make sure they are US made as the import ones fail and fail frequently). Quick, clean and effective. In Baja, where stuff is always trying to fall off your rig, zips can save your day. You can zip-tie and handful of zip ties to your frame, a tube, whatever. -Need one or two, pull them from the bunch and tighten the zip tie holding them together. Heck, you can use them to fasten your chili pepper lights to your awning if that's your thing.

That stuff saved my rear (leaky radiator) one Sunday morning in GN when just about everything was closed. The fix was still solid 6 years later when i sold that POS.

DeMinimis - 2-25-2010 at 02:50 PM

Great tip. I'm adding JB Weld to my Box-O-Parts-N-Tools pronto. Just used it to fix a broken creeper last weekend. Great stuff.

Gorilla Tape (duct tape on steroids)

bajafam - 3-15-2010 at 11:01 PM

We always go to the dollar store before we leave and grab 50 or so kites. We pass them out along the way....every time we return to San Quintin, the kids are always asking about the papalotes...it's fun to see them smile so big ~ adults, too :)

bajabass - 3-16-2010 at 07:22 AM

Hey folks, let's not forget the most important thing, a good, positive attitude! Don't leave home without it. There is almost nothing it can't fix!:light:

bajafam - 3-16-2010 at 07:34 AM

I agree! And a genuine smile :)

sharktooth - 5-4-2010 at 06:20 AM

BABY WIPES - these are a quick easy way to clean your hands without having to touch some of those nasty Baja bathroom sinks and that stinky gas station soap. Get the unscented baby wipes.

They come in handy for all types of purposes...just get fragrance free or your car will start to smell so 'fresh and clean' that it will make you sick!

spi - oct to ? have you done trips like this before? good luck and please post a report or log. I'm not sure I would do this , even if I had the time right now ., maybe sometime maybe...

Marc - 6-18-2010 at 09:58 PM

I carry so much junk (15 trips in 18 years) I can hardly get it in the truck. Never used anything (the emergency stuff) except the tow rope to haul locals out of the sand. Still; I wouldn't leave home without any of it.

Bob and Susan - 6-19-2010 at 06:05 AM

when i travel up and down...now...

i take my "go bag", tooth brush and an electric heater

you can buy anything down here you really need

you get better mileage too being "lighter"

MikeYounghusband - 6-19-2010 at 12:43 PM

Torch- Oct. 1st until I get to Cabo. I have been planning and training for 9 months and I am ready to go. I have befriended Graham Macintosh and he has helped me a great deal, In August I will make my last preperation trip and will be hiding supplies on the coast between El Rosario and Guerro Negro.

Well, I don't bring EVERYTHING on the list. I don't bring yeast, and I don't even know what an insect collection receptacle is. I have a feeling that it is something to gather insects for study rather than some kind of pest strip. Truth be told, if we were to empty the contents of our rigs after a trip, spread it out on the ground, and take inventory, many of us would be surprised of the amount of stuff we actually take with us. I have a camp kitchen / utility kit in a tote bag about the size of a lady's purse that contains an amazing number of individual objects. I should probably add propane canister refill adapter to the list if I have yet included it.

BajaBlanca - 7-8-2010 at 02:29 PM

an extra bike or surfboard or skateboard for Blanca's kids in La Bocana :))))

garage sale items to support the local teams :))

a dirty vehicle so the bike club can clean it during their carwash campaigns !

and to think that BajaCat brought down 6 donated bikes, all his kids and brother in law and family .... I still am staggered at his kindness months later .....

Probably because you put your "jewels/WARES :lol:" in them.

THE BAJA EQUIPMENT TRIP LIST

roadhog - 1-27-2011 at 06:01 PM

Left off the BIG BAJA TRIP EQUIPMENT LIST: a jack platform.
Custom made for your Pro Baja Jack and vehicle.
The platform for a floor jack and Econoline with hellwig rear bar is at:

http://picasaweb.google.com/datakollmarineresearch/JACKPLATF...

nice Washington 2x4.
The floor jack’s rear wheels are off the platform with jack body rails resting directly on plywood, front wheels set against the plywood lip on the 2x4’s.
Safety and maneuverability on soft surfaces.
:bounce:

roadhog - 1-27-2011 at 06:04 PM

BTW, idea seed credits always go to Gene Kira and Baja Catch, manana !

roadhog - 1-27-2011 at 06:10 PM

no nails. Drywall screws driven in with an electric drill.

bkbend - 1-28-2011 at 12:13 PM

Add legs and you've got a table for camp.

grizzlyfsh95 - 2-5-2011 at 08:44 AM

A good person friend like me is always the best thing you can have on hand!!!

micah202 - 1-22-2012 at 10:02 AM

...dunno if it's in here,,,but the #1 biggest thing I reccomend to campers in Baja is a doormat,,,preferrably one of those with thick-pile,plastic 'grass' mat.......somewhere to change without standing in sand,,,keeps sand from the van and bed,,,easily brushes feet off even when you get-up at night

Spearo - 1-22-2012 at 03:29 PM

If you're towing, I always have an extra set of seals and bearings for the trailer hubs along with two spares and an air compressor.

I also carry 47 fishing rods, 5 tackle boxes, three spearguns, nine filets knives, a skillet and a frying pan. And a bottle opener. But that's just me...

Alm - 5-4-2012 at 06:05 PM

After 7 years I don't know what this List is about anymore... Sleeping in a truck is one thing, tenting is another, towing is a different thing again. Different kits for every scenario - perhaps only car kit remains the same.

About that lost-misplaced ignition key: after calling AAA a few times (no such thing in Baja of course), I just ordered 3 spare keys. One is a designated car key, with a big pendant so it's easy to find (old car, no remote). One is on the ring with my house keys (you carry those in Baja anyway). And one more is in my desk at home. Make your own variations if you like - ex, one key in sleeping/clothes bag. Have never failed. For 2 people make more keys.

If you see my F150 (we call it the Silver Bullet) look under the back bumper and there will be a spare key taped up to one of the brackets.
Always there when I need it.
And, if you need to borrow the Bullet, well you know how to get it started...

Fishmagician - 5-6-2012 at 10:15 AM

Funny! A friend has a 12 volt dc electric model that plugs into a ciggy lighter socket and another on his golf cart. This has been a great and helpful thread, after years of travel there is always something that will make it easier/safer. We were supposed to head south on Wednesday but are holding off until we get a handle on the road/gas, especially gas, situation in Baja Sur. Besides Baja we run around the desert in Anza Borrego and AZ so a lot of things cross over.
There is a product called 'After Bite' that is great on stings, ant bites, bug nastiness in general. It is an ammonia based topical that comes in what looks like a marks-a-lot and has a pocket clip. We keep one in each vehicle, our backpacks and kayak kits. While kayaking past Puerto Escontito toward Juncalito once when Baja was wet/green and were hit by a swarm of bees. They usually don't sting when swarming unless threatened so we were lucky but the boats must have looked like a convenient resting place. I was surprise the bees were making a passage over water.

PS Its darn hard looking at our loaded and packed vehicle parked out front and not being on the road ~8^)
