The Baja

4x4abc - 1-26-2020 at 09:42 PM

had dinner with my Mexican girlfriend
"The Baja" came up
It is also wrong when you say "Baja" - she threw in
she has a point

so, almost nobody use the correct state terms of Baja California and Baja California Sur
seems like most Mexicans (including local politicians) use "Baja"
seems like "The Baja" is a favorite among foreigners

I am in a bind here. I don't want to give up saying "Baja" - how can I then ask others to abandon their "The Baja"?

When referring to California as "The California"?
Seriously though, I mention this point very often among my friends. I reply with, "You mean the northern state of Baja or the southern state of Baja?"
Or just Baja works for me. No "the".
Point in case... South California or North California. I know, there aren't two states, but everyone knows where you're talking about. I'm from So Cal or No Cal.

The same goes for the pronunciation of Tijuana. It's not "Teeawana" there isn't an A after the I. It's Teewhana....

el baja (or la baja if you think baja ain't macho)
le baja (fr.)
das baja (ger.)
du baja (basque)
az baja (hung.)

German - auf der Baja

bajaric - 1-27-2020 at 02:02 AM

Placing "the" in front of a subject gives it a sense of singularity, or awesomeness.
The Duke
The Greatest Show on Earth
The Baja!
Also provides an excuse for the locals to make fun of the tourists

gnukid - 1-27-2020 at 05:46 AM

If you say Baja no one knows what you are talking about, is it north or south, or down? Better to say what you mean, Baja California, Baja California Sur or baja la mesa.

It's actually Tia Juana that became colloquially Tijuana, so both are fine.

Just Don't...what does it really matter? It's no different than the 57 different ways to describe your sexuality.

Describe it as you wish and just leave it at that. NO ONE REALLY CARES. Sorry mommy taught you that you were important.

OK now this thread will get massive posts

I reluctantly agree. It usually comes across as rude to correct a person's grammar in public. Similar to "mansplaining."

On the internet, it seems that rule no longer applies. Along with many other general courtesies.

bajatrailrider - 1-27-2020 at 08:35 AM

Yes who cares there must be something better to do.

We have done this subject in the past... In 2014, was one time: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=75090

Before I ever heard others say 'The Baja', to me it was short for 'The Baja Peninsula' and 'Baja' (alone) is simply an abbreviation for 'Baja California' (the entire peninsula, not just the northern state).

In 1974, I got a CB radio and chose 'The Baja' as my handle.
In 1980, California license plates went from 6 to 7 letters/numbers so I got my own plates...

nomad 041.jpg - 29kB

The first set were the blue plates and when I traded my blue 4x4 Subaru for a gray one, I got the white plates. As you can see, the last year I had them on my vehicle was 1997. When I got a computer, the next year I think, and learned how many Baja nuts like me were out there, I was surprised!

In late 2000, I got my first Toyota 4x4 and a couple years after that, asked about renewing the plate. DMV said that to reactivate the personalized plate, I had to pay for the years that it was not active! No thanks, that's okay.

I generally say "Baja" or "Baja California" and never call the peninsula "The Baja" unless it I add "Peninsula" to that. I think it just sounds dumb. I do recognize how some places are named with "The" however:

The Sahara,
The Sudan,
The Congo,
The Yukon, eh?

From Dave Deal in Jimmy Smith's book, 'The Ginning Gargoyle Spills the Beans'

chuckie - 1-27-2020 at 08:55 AM

I just say Iam going to "my place in Mexico"

A Sense of Singularity ?

MrBillM - 1-27-2020 at 10:05 AM

Distinguishing it (Baja California) from ALL of those other places known as "Baja" ?

Ok, sure.

That's WHY so many people say "THE Ukraine", right ?

4x4abc - 1-27-2020 at 10:35 AM

maybe it is a language trend?

I noticed in Germany people add 'the' to first names when they talk about someone (not when they talk to the person directly)

Der Peter hat wieder Mist gemacht - The Peter goofed again
and not 'Peter goofed again'

JZ - 1-27-2020 at 10:36 AM

I've never heard anyone say The Baja in my life.

Seriously??
I guess I have chatted or heard a lot with Canadians about (the) Baja. I get many emails from people in the Great White North and the northern USA, too. Almost everyone asks about traveling in "the Baja"!
Scott Wolter (America Unearthed) is from Minnesota and when we were going over lines as we were waiting for the border inspection southbound he was saying "The Baja" so I did let him know that with us in or near Baja California that saying "The Baja" made him sound like a foreign newbie and since Scott is into fact finding history's mysteries, he modified the wording and dropped "the" from Baja.

A side note, while we see on the Internet how irritated Mexican speakers are that we shorten then name to just Baja, for many in Baja... it is just fine. I asked Antonio of Baja Cactus Motel (not Baja California Cactus) about this, years ago... He kind of laughed and said, we Mexicans always say "La Baja"! I found the same answer in San Felipe when a local would ask me if I liked "La Baja" (all in Spanish).

StuckSucks - 1-27-2020 at 12:57 PM

I prefer Lower California.

...like those damn southern Californians that abuse their freeways with "The" and call their freeways "The 405," "The 5," etc.

(yes, I abuse my freeways too)

David K - 1-27-2020 at 02:34 PM

Both the 5 and the 805 go to (the?) Baja!
