Whale trip question

mooose29 - 1-28-2020 at 12:44 AM

It has been years since we have stopped and seen the whales this year a group of friends are coming out and we will be driving down around April 18th/19th. I realize this is the end of the season but I was thinking if the whales are still around we might stop for a day trip. My questions are.

In Laguna Ojo de Liebre can we still drive ourselves out there and rent a boat for a tour. Last time I was out there we camped and then rented guides in the morning. All the tours I have found on line so far leave from Guerrero Negro and once done with the tour we will keep driving south so I would rather not back track to GN to get our cars. So if we can drive out that would be good.

Obviously it is different each season on average is San Ignacio or Scammons a Better bet for more whale activity?

Looks like at San Ignacio we can drive out there ourselves

Does anyone have a favorite group or tour for a one day adventure. We could spend the night if necessary or just spend a few hours on the water.

I would love to hear about what others have done recently.

Our group will be 7, 3 of us are Baja regulars and have done many whale trips but it has probably been 15 years and the other 4 are adventurous but are from the Midwest and never seen the whales. So I am trying to giving them a different experience the. Just driving down to the house and hanging out.

Thank you.

You need to know the date the season ends. Roads close, tours end. It's about April 15th. But since you're on the cusp - find out for sure.

For San Ignacio and Ojo de Liebre season ends untill april 30th.

Its late in the season and nearly all whales are gone, but you can check a few days before and see if you have any luck.

The only place i know that you can drive, camp and get the tour its in the Ejido Benito Juarez, but still have to drive 30 km. and back to Hwy 1.

They have camping sites, a small restaurant and 24hr security, it may be worthy to drive all the way to the lagoon.
