Swimming with whale sharks?

John M - 2-10-2020 at 03:40 PM

We'll be around the east cape early June - and my wife would really like to experience this adventure - is the time of year right? We'll be spending a week or more in Las Barriles, would that be convenient to places where this is available?

I'm no expert but I think they are in La Paz now and start to migrate North towards the end of February so early June you will be out of luck. Cabo Pulmo is a great place to visit for diving and snorkeling at that time of year. Swim with bull sharks!

I believe your best bet to see them at that time of year is probably Bahia De Los Angeles.

I highly recommend it, was lucky enough to swim with them in December in La Paz, absolutely incredible - but you have to get lucky there, the access is highly regulated, and sharks may or may not cooperate. some days people wait for 3 - 6 hours just to get access to the area.

After research and asking local ex pats, i ended up going with La Paz VIP tours, excellent, especially the small boat with Maritza as the guide, shes an actual marine biologist who has been studying this population of sharks for 6 years. That allowed up to peal away from the group of 5 or 6 boats chasing 1 shark, found our own, all to ourselves, remarkable experience!

so getting the right provider, and getting lucky on the timing, is the determiner of your experience.

here's a couple of photos, this was a 25 foot long whale shark, just a juvenile apparently, but the adults do not reside in the SOC (as I understand it) last photo is the lunch the tour provided on the beach after diving with the whale sharks, then diving with sea lions as well

You might try posting this on Bahia de las Angeles FB page, some of the posters there are experts on the migration patterns and even have tracking devices on some of the sharks.

I just watched a show here called " Crossing South" it's on weekly here in San Diego and hosted by a Jorge somethingorether, but a good show, I typically see it on KPBS. They just had a special on swimming with the whale sharks and it was in June or earlt July and in BOLA, I would follow prior advice and contact folks in that part of Baja, good luck

In my limited experience, the whale sharks show up in Punta Chivato the first week of June or so, so I would think Bahia Conception would be a prime area for that time of the year. Use TempBreak to follow the chlorophyl and that is where they will be.

Whale Shark season officially closes in April in La Paz and opens in October.
