Camping South of San Felipe for a Night

joel - 6-29-2020 at 11:02 PM

I usually stay in hotels on my way south but wanting to be safe for me and for others I thought I’d sleep in my truck. Can anyone recommend safe campgrounds south of San Felipe not too far off the road?

You could always try the Cowpatty in Puertecitos. If Memo, the manager/bartender is home I would think he would be good with it. He lives behind the bar.

How far south? Here's campgrounds the first 50 miles:

If you are looking for close encounters with the local coyotes, go ahead and leave your groceries outside next to your truck!

My pleasure, Joel.
AK, yes... a wildlife experience would be guaranteed that way!

I can tell you for a fact that Percebu and Mazatlan campgrounds are closed. Technically all the beaches are closed. You might be better heading west from the highway and wild camp in the desert.

He doesn't want to go to the beach, he only wants a secure place to overnight out of prying eyes (so not along the highway). Rancho Grande Palapas may be an answer if he can drive the nearly 100 miles from San Felipe. Villa Marina should work if he can't?

Not current info, but when I passed through Coco's Corner on my way north (March 1) he was offering free camping! I have never overnighted there, but it seemed he was desperate for company, as well as customers. I hope he is ok!

Related- is there a Pemex station after SF, before heading west to Hwy 1?

Realize they're not scenic, and can be noisy depending on location. But I've sometimes stayed at one when I needed a nap, to have people around and access to restrooms.

Pemex at Puertecitos on the branch road off the highway (Km. 74.5) and a Pemex at Gonzaga Bay on the highway (Km. 147). The Gonzaga Bay Pemex is usually open but the Puertecitos one is a maybe.

We stayed at Punta Estrella Beach. Pricey at $40 usd per night but the light was helpful for unloading and it’s a beautiful beach. Thanks for the tips.

From Patti, in May 2020:

"Bar is Closed until September. However, Richard will be there all summer, his house is across the road from the cow patty".
